TONIGHT: In-Store Melpo Mene 7pm

A worldwide love affair has begun with the dreamy, Swedish sounds of Melpo Mene. From Stockholm to Paris and New York City to Los Angeles, Melpo has shared the stage with other such prolific artists such as Bon Iver, Loney Dear, Jose Gonzalez, and more. His much anticipated third full-length album, Behind the Trees, offers a uniquely evolved sound, undeniably marking his most mature songwriting to date. “The songs were not written with an album in mind,” Melpo states, “they were the result of something like a diary in an uphill period. No matter the mood of the fuel put into this album this time, I wanted the songs to point upwards and stay encouraging. I believe the only reason a person can enjoy a dark corner is fear of light.”

Melpo's music brilliantly marries image and sound, having earned him placements in a worldwide Volvo commercial and television shows such as Bored To Death and Breaking Bad. Melpo's past album, Bring the Lions Out, enticed Brooklyn Vegan to name Melpo's music "hella addictive." This is proven by his recordings on Behind the Trees, which explore a deep electronic pulse more than ever before. Behind the Trees features warm analog synths, atmospheric guitars, and ventures into new territory and a different sound. This is the third full-length album from Melpo Mene in four years, and as he continued his evolution in music, we can expect amazement over and over again.

TONIGHT: In-Store Blood Orange 7pm

I am so stoked about seeing Blood Orange, like, really. I first heard the debut single "Dinner" (released by Terrible Records) I knew that this was gonna be different than his other projects such as Test Icicles and Lightspeed Champion. I was hooked. A full length album later, put out by Domino Records in August 2011, Blood Orange is grooving in every body's heart. His debut album, Coastal Grooves, will steer you in  finding your inner 80's drag queen, I know I did. This album will seduce you--and you won't even know it's happening til you find yourself naked on the dance floor. Now, come join us tonight so we can boogie!

xx Origami Vinyl

Everything below is still worth checking out...

Warning: Expect your brain to explode tonight, in the very best way a brain could explode. Remember Sacramento, our beloved state's capitol? Yeah, Death Grips--consisting of Stefan Burnett on vocals with the production team of Zach Hill and Andy Morin--are from there and remind us that good, progressive music can come from anywhere. This trio can best, easily, be described as an aggressive punk-rap group (I'll leave the classifying to taxonomists) that will shatter any idea you have about what a "punk-rap" group would sound like. Self-described as a group of freaks and outsiders, Death Grips officially emerged in 2011 when they released a mixtape entitled Exmilitary and a year later are now signed with Epic Records which we will see the release of two albums in 2012. The Money Store, which was just released, (check out that album art work!) and No Love to be released sometime in the fall. Come prepared to have your life changed. See you tonight!

TONIGHT: Final Night of So Many Wizards Residency at the Echo

It's the time once again! Origami Vinyl, KXLU, and KSPC present the So Many Wizards residency at The Echo. Tonight is FINAL NIGHT of the series. No more of that "I'll go next week" B-S, tonight is your last chance! And it's going to be a good one. Long Beach based So Many Wizards have made quite a name for themselves recently in the LA music scene. Consisting of members Nima Kazerouni, Erik Felix, Frank Maston, and Geoff Geis, the band plays a style of indie pop that claims influence from 50s and 60s pop music. Having just returned from shows in the UK and at SXSW, the wizards will be playing for free over at the Echo every Monday for the rest of April. That is, if you're over 21 of course... ;)

And lastly... we've got three super awesome bands also playing tonight! They are Moses Campbell (notorious punk folk local band), Body Parts (experimental pop), and Batwings Catwings (quintessentially So-Cal band of party rockers).  Damn,  I'm going to miss this rezzie. I know you will too. See you TONIGHT at 9pm. \m/

Record Store Day 2012: Big Black Delta

....And last but not least, closing out the Origami Vinyl Record Store Day 2012 celebration is the notorious BIG BLACK DELTA. They will be playing at The Echo at 7pm,  capping off the the free day-long 8-band show (doors open at noon). Big Black Delta is a solo project of Mellowdrone vocalist/bassist Jonathan Bates. Big Black Delta has collaborated with a number with other artists such as War Widow, Alessandro Cortini, and Morgan Kibby

As of July 2010, Jonathan Bates says BBD is his  “new musical endeavor” which aims to release new free music every few weeks. The bands first release “BBDEP1” was released for free download in August 2010 and the followup lp, “BBDLP1”, was released on September 26th, 2011 to rather positive feedback. BBD opened for M83 at the Fox Theater recently and is back again to play our free show at the Echo! I hope you enjoyed my bios and will see you on Saturday for Record Store DayIt's going to be rad B-)

Electric Guest are playing our Origami Vinyl Record Store Day celebration. Starting at noon on Saturday, we'll be having eight bands playing the Echo  next door for free. Electric Guest is one of them and they certainly are not to be missed.

Electric Guest consists of Los Angeles-based duo ASA Taccone and Matthew Compton. You might have heard of EG as being the guys managed by Monotone Inc (Jack White, Vampire Weekend, The Shins) and produced by the legendary Danger Mouse (Brian Burton). Having worked with Burton on their melancholy indie pop tracks, it’s no wonder these catchy tunes are catching the ears of many. Featured on MTV’s list of Artists To Watch in 2012, Electric Guest obviously has the potential to rise as a new staple of the indie-pop genre. Electric Guest will be releasing their debut "Mondo" on 4/24 and are playing The Echo this Saturday at 5pm! Remember it's a free show! See you then............

Record Store Day 2012 - Races

Did you know that Origami Vinyl is having a big show in honor of Record Store Day?? Of course you did! In addition to in-store giveaways, DJs, and record store day exclusives, we'll be throwing a little party over at The Echo and it is highly recommended that you go! The show is free, all ages, and features performances by 8 bands!! RACES will be gracing the stage at 5pm and, let me tell you, I am very stoked. RACES (formerly Black Jesus) is one of Origami's fave local bands at the moment and their recent debut "Year of the Witch" (Frenchkiss Records) is highly recommended.

RACES exists as a result of artistic rebirth and personal rediscovery, but it all starts at a point in Wade Ryff’s life where motivation was at its most scarce.  Disillusioned with music, beset with the bitter ending of a relationship with a real life witch and faced with the overwhelming stagnation of being a 23-year old in the sleepy suburban outpost of Van Nuys, during that time, Ryff wrote the pleading lyrics of “Big Broom” in the bathroom of his parents house. He explains the song’s message as “accepting that every ending is a new beginning, and even if we may have no control over when things are given or taken from us, we can always choose how to respond.” Whether he realized it or not at the time, it would serve as a mission statement for a handful of musicians in the area who were also idling through their 20’s and desperate for a new beginning. Still, nothing could anticipate it all coming together for Year Of The Witch, a life-affirming document forged from the pain of a time when life feels most uncertain and coming out of it renewed.

Definitely check these guys out on 4/21! It'll be a fun set. See you on Record Store Day...

TONIGHT: In-Store w/ The John Francis 7pm

“Voyage of the Daring Cornelia” tells the story of the cruise ship Cornelia, a doomed vessel that carries with her not only an ill-fated destiny but a motley band of Undead Under Officers aboard.  A simple tale, told in various fits and starts with electric guitar, bass, drums, and other rock and roll chamber music accompaniment, your record-flipping efforts will be rewarded as you explore peaceful coves, treacherous seas, and humble ends.  Our idiom is comic rock, our method is program music, and our referential inspiration is maritime.  Ahoy!
Join us tonight at 7 pm as The John Francis sails into our loft!

TONIGHT: So Many Wizards Residency Night Three at The Echo

It's the time once again! Origami Vinyl, KXLU, and KSPC present the So Many Wizards residency at The Echo. Tonight is night three of the series and features some pretty awesome bands. That is, if you're over 21 of course... ;)

Be sure to catch the other groups playing as well! Tonight we have Magick Orchids & Michael Nhat (songs with sounds and noises generated by the electronic instruments. Nhat is a rapper), Jon Barba (Nicole Kidman), and Wildcat! Wildcat! (quality taste, sexy beats, and beautiful thoughtfulness in songwriting). Rad. 9pm tonight. See ya there.

Record Store Day 2012 - Electric Flower Group

Here's a band you won't want to miss on Record Store Day. The band is known as Electric Flower Group and they freaking rock!! They played an in-store at Origami Vinyl a few weeks ago and killed it! They'll be playing the Echo for free on 4/21 as a part of OV's Record Store Day 2012 celebration. You best be there!

The Electric Flower Group consists of Los Angeles locals, Imaad Wasif (guitar/vox) and Josh Garza (drums) pertaining to a style best described as "part motorik and part psychedelic." According to their bio, the duo are on a journey through a modern kaleidoscope of rock 'n' roll, transcending mainstream influence and incorporating strong minimalist elements into their modern psychedelic music.  In Garza’s pummeling beats and Wasif’s vocal and guitar exorcisms, we are not listening to just two men, but to an orchestra of the damned.  EFG wakes the ghosts of rock's most daring days, while never following them.

The second EP from Electric Flower Group (out now on Narnack Records) finds the visceral realist duo expanding their sound beyond the rawness of their first EP to explore the dimensions of depth and width. This EP is proof that music today can be Cinematic and Conceptual without the complications of Over-Instrumentation as demonstrated within the Modern Overarching Epic. Conversely, it moves against the wake of new-fangled blues stomp rock and the limits of its obligatory two-piece bands.  Side two of the EP is dedicated to a cover of Scott Walker’s dark symphonic ode to S&M, “The Electrician,” done to such effect that it cuts to the core of the original, its primitive brightness reaching far out into other corner.

Well there you have it. See you on 4/21!
