CHEERS!
Save Our Beaches!
Just weeks ago at the polling stations, voters shot down Gov. Schwarzeneggar's proposed tax increases. Now his budget efforts have focused on cutting funding for California's state parks and beaches.
The new proposal threatens to close all but 59 of the state's 279 state parks! Among those slated for closure are landmark spots like Pt. Mugu, Torrey Pines, El Cap, McGrath, Refugio, Carpinteria, even Half Moon Bay and more than 200 others! The plan would be devastating to surfers, campers, cyclists, hikers, conservationists... anyone who enjoys California's natural awesomeness; but it would also hit local economies real hard, taking away the revenue that comes with the many park visitors... in effect worsening the very budget problems it purports to solve.
It's time to take a stand for our beaches and parks. The Surfrider Foundation has put together an easy form letter that you can send right from their site:
We need your help to take action TODAY and tell the Governor and your state legislators that gutting funding to state parks is unacceptable.
Next Tuesday, June 2, the Legislature's Budget Conference Committee will consider this proposal. State park and coastal advocates need to make their voices heard RIGHT NOW. Your contact to your legislators is critical.
Submit yours now and urge your friends to do the same.

Tonight at 9pm, our 3rd installment of Record Club graces El Prado! Tonight's guests include:
- Imee - who is a neighborhood vinyl junkie who still thinks its cool to buy records at thrift stores and still plays cassette tape. She is excited to play a record at El Prado that gives everyone a nice little head nod while sitting on their stools
- Kim Hell - Bassist for local band Future Ghost has a fantasy for playing records super loud in a living room, full of sunshine, with wide open windows. But for now she is going to settle for doing this at a bar.
- Wes Armstrong - You might know him for slanging drinks at the Edendale. His vinyl collection has been growing steadily lately and he's having a hard time narrowing down the selection for tonight. Pressure is on!
- Ashley Jex - Runs Jaxart Records. Has released records from the Parson Red Heads, Henry Clay People, The Valley Arena, and other local faves. Also plays bass for the Monolators. Sure to bring something really cool, guaranteed.
+ some some other last minute guests.
Your hosts Neil and Sean from Origami Vinyl will also play you some stuff that we think is kinda neat. Our sign-up sheet will be at the bar for those that would like to participate in a future record club night.
Here are the details:

a little recap on record club last night...
Here is a little recap of what was played and by whom...
- I started things off with a record I have been digging since the middle of last year, Pattern is Movement's All Together. I played the A side, which ended up being a theme for the whole night, weird... Anyways, I came across PIM, because of Ben Heywood. He had a heard a thing or two about 'em, so we spontaneously went down to the Echo to go check em out. It was a pretty empty show, which was too bad, because these 2 guys laid it down! I couldn't believe the complexity and beauty of the music that came out of only 2 people. It was quite the treat.
- Next up was Sean Foye. Sean is a local music producer and audio engineer. He is currently working on a couple of projects that include the new Summer Darling album, Brandon Hardy of Future Ghost's side project, and some odds and ends for Wait.Think.Fast. Sean played the A side of Sleater-Kinney's album, Dig Me Out, because he loves girls who rock (see Kissing Cousins). that was a plug...
- Zach, a local screenwriter and blogger for music site www.welistenforyou.com was our next guest. He brought the Silver Jews album, American Water, because he feels that lyrically it's one of the greatest albums ever written. Like Leonard Cohen, Silver Jews frontman David Berman is a poet first and a songwriter second. (highly recommend Berman's book of poetry, Actual Air). With this said, the melodies are nothing to turn your nose up at, catchy guitar riffs will have many tracks off this album stuck in your head for days. It also helps that Stephen Malkmus (Pavement) plays lead guitar on the album.
- Following Zach was Chris Stewart, aka Stew to his buds, helps run the mixed use space / vintage store called, The Clinic, which is a couple dooors west of Origami Vinyl. Bringing a freight train to El Prado, Chris, played Wu-Tang's Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), only because he has always wanted to hear that record at El Prado and this was his chance to fulfil his fantasy.
- Heather Heywood stepped up the plate next and delivered, playing the A side of Department of Eagle's In Ear Park, because she is so excited for the new Grizzly Bear album to come out next week. Heather, sings and plays guitar in Kissing Cousins and plays bass in Summer Darling, both rad local bands. Kissing Cousins new album drops in June so keep a look out for it.
- Ben Heywood, Heather's husband, and lead singer / guitarist for Summer Darling was up next. He had a rough day at work and needed to unwind. So he played These Arms are Snakes' album Easter to get all of his aggression out. It totally worked. Musical Therapy!
- To close out the night Brandon Hardy, the drummer for Future Ghost, a local band from Echo Park, played Time Out by Dave Brubeck. When Brandon was learning drums at the age of 12, he was told to listen to this album and pay attention to the odd time signatures. The album ended up being a big influence on his playing.
Hope you enjoyed Record Club and we look forward to hanging out with you again next Tuesday night!
Neil

Last Night at Record Club...
- Interrupted the bar to make an announcement about Record Club to 98% cheering and 2% jeering. the 2% got chewed out by 98%
- Neil played an unknown Neil Young bootleg, Side 3 of a 2xLP set. It was recorded in the early 70's and featured "Sugar Mountain", "Don't Let It Bring You Down", and "Love in Mind". The album is white labeled and has my late father's handwriting all over it, which makes it really cool.
- Melissa played the B side of The Doors "The Soft Parade". Melissa talked about how her and her dad would lay on the floor and listen to "The Soft Parade". It totally shaped her love for music and is one of her favorite memories of her Dad.
- Sean S. played the A side of the Self Titled album from The La's. Sean explained that to him it is one of the best pop albums ever made that has never been heard. And even though they were looked over as a one-hit wonder, it's the album cuts that really make this band.
- Sean F. played the A side of the Fugazi's "The Argument". Sean didn't really say much about the record other than he found the record sealed at Heather's house and was excited to open it and play it for it's first time at Record Club.
- Heather played the B Side of Starflyer 59's album "Talking Voice vs. Singing Voice". SF59 is one of Heather's all time favorite bands and has been a huge influence on her songwriting. Her bands; Kissing Cousins and Summer Darling have worked with Frank Lenz and have become friends with Jason Martin, which is like the raddest thing.
- Beth, unbeknownst to what Sean F was playing, also brought Fugazi's "The Argument" (What are the chances of that happening?) and played the B side of the record. Luckily for both of them, they wanted to play the opposite sides. Whew! Conflict averted...
- And swooping in at the nick of time, was Ben who concluded the night with the perfect comedown, Massive Attack's "Mezzanine". The A side helped us fade out from the bar and into a swirling buzz on Sunset.
Thanks to Catherine, Jeff, and Leonel at El Prado for making it all happen. We have already filled up our slots for the next two weeks, so be sure to come out and sign up for a future night. We are really excited about all of this and hope you are too.
'til next week...

Origami Vinyl to Host Record Club, Beginning Tonight at El Prado in Echo Park!!!
Starting tonight and continuing every Tuesday hereafter, Origami Vinyl will host Record Club at El Prado in Echo Park. Record Club started as an intimate gathering of friends at their humble abodes in Echo Park and Silverlake, where each person invited (generally around 8) would bring 2 songs to play for everyone. The night would conclude with the host making a mix of all the songs played and handing them out to the participants. We all found it to be such a rewarding experience of new music and social interaction that we wanted to bring it out into the public. The new format is a bit different but just as rewarding and is as follows:
- Each Tuesday, we invite 8 people to sign up to participate in Record Club...It's first come, first serve so get there early!!
- Record Club begins at 9pm roughly and ends around 1am.
- Each person will have a full side of their record played. A side or B side is fine...your choice!
- We like to tweet each contribution and hopefully get a little insight into why people brought each particular record.
- Each participant is rewarded a free beer on us for taking part.
If you would like to participate in future record clubs, please come tonight and we will put you on our list, or visit us at the shop.
Here are the details for Record Club
Origami Vinyl hosts Record Club
Every Tuesday night at 9pm to 1am
@ El Prado 1805 W. Sunset Blvd in Echo Park across the street from Origami Vinyl
Hope to see you tonight!

Say Hi In-Store Performance Wed at 7pm
Alela Diane & her guitar
Alela Diane paid us a visit on Saturday to sing us a set and debut her new pixie cut! Well, it was more the former than the latter but both made a really good impression.
She walked in with her guitar and her dad, and proceeded to fill our small space with music as equally charming as her face. Nothing about Alela Diane seems the least bit unnatural and her voice was so rich and smooth... like a satisfying cup o' joe for my ears. And that'd probably be a nice afternoon decaf - more soothing midday warmth than morning caffeine rush.
Needless to say, she totally made our day and we've got her newly released album, To Be Still, in stock now. Check out Alela's MySpace for a little taste and come see us for your own copy of the freshly brewed afternoon delight!
