The Cigarette Bums In-Store Performance Tonight

Tonight we welcome The Cigarette Bums in our loft for a special in-store performance at 8pm to celebrate their brand new 7" "Jailbird" b/w "Careless Love". "Ranging from delta blues, jazz, funk, to garage rock, The Cigarette Bums play an ecclectic mix of sounds that are sure to get you moving. The band can be found at many local dives and venues playing a set or just jamming with random street musicians. Originating in silverlake with singer songwriter eamon michael mcginness, steven slaughter and drummer jimmy c., the Bums paint on a soundscape with the depth of pollock and the texture of a Van Gogh." - A. Tonight is the night...not just like any other night

Tonight we’re tagging up with our friends at Aquarium Drunkard to celebrate their decade in review. While they won't won’t finish on the blog until December 31st, we've got the master list of AD’s favorites and are stocking as many of them in vinyl as possible. This is a good time to ask Santa for that turntable you’ve been pining for.

The party is free and so is the booze (thanks Colt 45!), so come down and hang out with us as our friends The Henry Clay People, Dirt Dress and Evan Way perform in the loft. There may be Santa suits involved.

See you here

This Weekend is Gonna Be Fun!!!

Friends and Fam!

Origami Vinyl is very excited to host two rad events this weekend and we hope that most of you can come out to check one or maybe both of them out!

Tomorrow marks the first annual "Echo Park Holiday Shop Hop" and Origami Vinyl is getting involved in a big way! First off, the Echo Park Holiday Parade kicks off at Noon, rain or shine! Then Origami will put on an Origami folding workshop outside our doors to teach kids how to fold cool things like frogs, cobras, boxes, and cranes. Then around 3pm, newly signed to Sub Pop, local faves Avi Buffalo will kick off a set in our loft! At about 7pm, the lovely Angela Correa aka Correatown will perform. In addition to our festivities you will also find a comedy show and Charles Dickens reading at 826LA, The Damselles doing doo wop holiday caroling up and down the strip, a Santa visit at the Out of the Closet, Craft Fair at the Echo, and all sorts of other rad stuff. You can check the Echo Park Holiday Shop Hop Facebook Page for more info about participating shops and their events. This is a great opportunity to bring the family out, do some holiday shopping, get some deals, and support local business!

On Sunday, local but nationally coveted music blog, Aquarium Drunkard will host their "Decade in Review" party at Origami Vinyl from 7pm - ???. For the past couple of months, Aquarium Drunkard has been highlighting all their favorite albums of the 2000's on their site and will celebrate the decade here at the shop! Performances from The Henry Clay People, Evan Way of Parson Red Heads, and Dirt Dress will all be happening in the loft. Free beer will be flowing. Origami has also stocked their shelves with as much of AD's faves as possible so that you can get in on the action!!

Both events are free! We hope to see you here! And thanks to everyone for all of your support. Flyers for both events are below.

Goodies Galore + Local Natives ticket deal

We are very happy to become acquainted with How To Fight Records! They have two releases to their name and they are both fantastic.

Meho Plaza's "Made of Gold" is a wild, angular head rush driven by raging bass guitar and washes of crash cymbals in the chorus, all beneath the wail of "Made of Goooold!!"

Voices Voices pressed their song "Tidal," which by comparison is more orchestrated- droney and entrancing, like a crystal cave where black magic is practiced.

Enticed? Check out these rad How To Fight Records releases, and be on the lookout for the next installation of HTFR's Animal Battles Series, Volume 2, featuring drum and shout noisemakers Foot Village.

And this just in: Local Natives 7inches! Four bucks a pop, and with it you get a free ticket to their show @ The Echo on December 22nd. Now that's what I call a best buy!

The Shortstop Tonight. Let's Take it BACK!

OK, I have lived in Echo Park for about 9 years. I use to frequent the Shortstop about every other day back when they allowed dancing, before they got busted for not having a permit, before they acquired a permit and reopened the dancefloor. The place was fucking amazing then. Lot's of cool art kids, punks, and dub heads. The jukebox always had cool tunes playing if there weren't DJs and the hot bartenders would always poor me a stiff Jim and Coke. Not to mention I am a huge Greg Dulli (Afghan Wigs/Twilight Singers/The Gutter Twins) fan and he is one of the owners. Once the dancefloor got shut down, we started to frequent the bar less and less. We found ourselves hitting the Gold Room for free tacos and a shot with all the old Latinos, which was kinda sketchy at times- I'm pretty sure few white kids dared venture in back then. But it proved to be a great escape from the "scene" of places like the newly opened Little Joy. Once the Shorty got it's dancefloor reopened we started to go back. But it just wasn't the same. It had this bridge and tunnel feel to it. No disrespect to the owners, but it just seemed to take on this USC college crowd thing. All of a sudden lines were forming outside and a 45 minute wait became the standard (In the beginning of the line stuff, the bouncers were cool and would let all us old locals skip it and go in. But after awhile they were catching so much shit from it, they had to stop). Nowadays, I spend most of my time at El Prado. For me it has the right vibe and good beer selection (my liver just can't handle the hard stuff anymore), plus it is mellow and suits my preference to having conversations and hearing good records over the blaring Michael Jackson and bad 80's music (I do still take part in pre-Dodger game pitchers of PBR at Shorty though). In this time I have maintained a close working relationship with Shortstop co-owner Dave Neupert (La Cita, Footsies, El Tres Inn). Origami currently curates their rad 3 room suites at El Tres in Los Feliz. Dave had become a fan of our Record Club night at El Prado and wanted to find a way to have us do a DJ night at one of his bars. Since Shortstop is so close to the store and we'd prefer to support our hood, we felt it fit what we wanted to do best. But to be honest I'm a little nervous. I'm nervous that people aren't going to be into what we play. I'm nervous that since we don;t really play a whole lot of 80's, Michael Jackson, and hits, we are gonna get booed out of there.

So, this is our chance to get back a night at Shortstop to where it was. Because in reality it is the best bar/dancefloor in Echo Park. And peeps that live here would love to love it again. We are gonna rock a bunch of new stuff, rare stuff, unheard stuff, and classic stuff. It's gonna be fun stuff, some you can dance to, some to nod your head to. This is our night, guys and we need your help to make it cool. We are going to do this thing on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month starting in January. Tonight is our test run! Let's kill it!
