FENCES in-store at 6pm

Fences, the musical alias of Christopher Mansfield, is the culmination of Mansfield’s songwriting to date, stretching back to the project’s inception in the Boston area circa 2004, and continuing right up to songs written shortly before recording his eponymous debut. Mansfield jokes that he traffics in “wussy pop music,” and his full-band live performances are more upbeat than novices might anticipate, but as Fences attests, beneath his sing-along hooks and charismatic performances are songs with a steel core.

Fences is not merely the recording alias of the Seattle songwriter. It is the distillation of Mansfield’s entire aesthetic. “I’ve tried to take everything in the world that I love, and turn it into this thing that’s Fences,” says the straightforward 27-year-old. Fences starts with Mansfield’s life experience to date, and ends… well, when he says so. Hopefully not for a long time. Because right now, Fences is just coming into its own, with the release of a stunning debut album, entitled, naturally, Fences.

See you this evening!

LOWER HEAVEN at 8pm

Appearing in our loft this evening is Lower Heaven.

Hailing from the sun-drenched hills of eastside Los Angeles, Lower Heaven create dark, shimmering waves of sinister neo-shoegaze on this vinyl version of their buzzed-about debut. Recorded with the engineers behind West Coast institutions BRMC and the Brian Jonestown Massacre, these songs are equally indebted to the early Creation Records sounds of Ride, MBV, et al. Tremendous and essential. - trdmrk.org

Check out their latest "Ashes" and look for "Today Is All We Have" out later this year.

KATH BLOOM instore at 4pm

Kath Bloom is an underground folk legend and we are so pumped to have her grace our loft this afternoon.

She had a long musical relationship with Loren Connors in the late '70's and early 80's that gained her esteemed notoriety. After they stopped collaborating in 1984, Bloom concentrated on raising her children and stopped making music, at least publically. In 1999, she finally released a new album of work titled "Come Here: The Florida Years". In 2009 a tribute album to Kath was made and featured artists such as Devendra Banhart, Bill Callahan, Mark Kozolek, The Dodos, and Scout Niblett doing her songs. Thin Thin Line, her latest record which was released on Mark Kozalek's Caldo Verde label, marks her second album in three years, following 2008’s Terror. All are worth tracking down...and we hope you do.

This is an extremely rare performance, so do not miss!

Origami Vinyl Launches Video Site!!!

Yo buddies!

Since the inception of Origami, we have hosted countless in-store performances from local and touring bands. About 40 people can fit inside the shop and catch a unique and intimate show. Many times the store fills to capacity and people have to stand outside to catch a glimpse. Over the last 6 months or so we have been capturing some of these incredible performances on video. Jack Schlinkert and Max Sweeney (Directors) have done an amazing job putting these episodes together and they look beautiful.

So it makes us so stoked to finally launch our new video site, "On The Record" today! Please go check it out at www.ontherecord.tv and let us know what you think!

Each day this week we will be launching a new performance from or around the shop. After this week, we will be launching a new performance every Monday. Here's the release schedule for this week.

Origami and The Echo Partner Up On Something Cool!

2011 is going to be a big year for us at Origami. Expect lots of cool announcements during the 1st quarter of this year because we have been working on some pretty rad tricks! Which leads us to our first BIG announcement...

As you know, we are extremely committed to supporting the local music scene here in LA. A major inspiration to our mission has been the Monday Night Residencies The Echo and Spaceland have been putting on for years. It's such an awesome concept to have an up and coming local band take over the club for a month, allowing them to curate the other bands that play. We've seen so many great bands come out of these residencies and break out nationally. In the last year alone Local Natives, Warpaint, and Fool's Gold all rocked it.

So we are extremely excited to announce that we will be partnering with The Echo starting this February as the presenter of said Monday Night Residencies! This will allow us to help get behind these local bands a bit more by adding more promotion and support. Each month's hosting band will enjoy a spotlight in the shop and promo in this newsletter. We will also post interviews, mp3s and other content on our blog about them so you can fill yourself in. In addition to this, Sean and I will be taking over the back patio of The Echo each Monday night. We'll be DJing records, have a little pop-up shop out there selling stuff, and hosting record release parties for 1 band each week. The record release parties will feature us playing the album in it's entirety, doing giveaways and other fun stuff and giving you the ability to buy the record the night before it comes out. Also starting in February, The Echo will be opening a patio bar so you can keep your hands full of libations! To top it all off there is no admission! That's right, these things are gonna stay free. Man this is gonna be some cool party!

Here are some things you should know:

February's Hosting Band(s) - Slang Chickens and Papa
02/07 Line-up: Slang Chickens, Papa, Mini Mansions, and Rachel Marie Williams (ex-Sleepy Sun)
02/14 Line-up: Slang Chickens, Papa, John Carpenter, TBA
02/21 Line-up: Slang Chickens, Papa, more TBA
02/28 Line-up: Slang Chickens, Papa, more TBA

Here are the Record Release Parties we've lined up out on the back patio so far...
02/07 - Esben and The Witch (Matador)
02/14 - Mogwai (Sub Pop)
02/21 - Anika (Stones Throw)

*all shows are 21+

If you are a label or an artist and want to have your Record Release Party on the back patio, hit us up and we can talk specifics!

Unfortunately with this partnership means, that we will have to put our weekly night, POST-, at Footsie's Bar to rest after January. Thanks to Dave, Kristy, and Terrill for making our experience there awesome. Please come out over the next 4 Monday's and hang out with us as we close it out with a bang. We will be having special guest DJs each week! it's free and goes from 10pm - 2am.
