OV WEEKLY: 2014 Kicks Into High Gear!
Things have been a bit quiet here at Origami lately, but since last week's together PANGEA release show, the hits have been coming left and right! Here's a quick breakdown so you don't get left out in the cold!
Tuesday, January 28th - Hospitality's Trouble hits OV! Dum Dum Girls Release Party!
We've been dying to hear this newest release from these Brooklyn upstarts, and the time is almost here!
The first thing you might notice about Hospitality's sophomore album "Trouble" is what you don't hear. The process of completing the album was, for the band, one of learning to accept silence, to let that empty space exist no matter what it might awaken or evoke. You could catch glimpses of these dark and unexplored places in the margins of Hospitality's 2012 self-titled debut, but they are the very heart of 'Trouble". If you listen closely, you can hear a band pushing against their own boundaries and limitations until they find the very air around them subtly but perceptibly changed. Listen HERE. Snag the record HERE.
Once you've picked the record up, head over to the Echo for the Dum Dum Girls record release party! We've been big fans of these ladies and they've been good friends since the beginning! We're so stoked to celebrate the release of Too True with them.
For the past few months, Christine and Emily have been pushing this 7" of the song, "Sanity" by The Beets frontman, Juan Wauters. He is finally releasing his full length solo album, "NAP North American Poetry" on Captured Tracks on Feb 4. We think it's so important that you get this record that we're offering a pre-order that comes with a signed poster. Juan is signing these exclusively for us and each one has a different message.. they're pretty sweet if you ask us. You can pick it up here. In the meantime, check out the single, Water.
Wednesday January 29th
Speaking of Captured Tracks, on Wednesday we're gonna head over to the Echo to see Mac Demarco. No explanation necessary.
Thursday January 30th
On Thursday afternoon, La Luna's will be doing some filming in the loft so come catch a couple songs while they play! La Luna's is a three piece garage rock/surf band with Sasha from Spindrift on vocals and currently, Patty Schemel on drums. Things kick off at 2 pm.
Our buddies, Reputante, are in town from NYC and are playing with Lola Wolf at the Echo on Thursday night. (Yes, we realize that all these shows are at the Echo but come on, they're killing it this week!) Listen to the sweet sweet sounds of James Levy's crooner voice and get excited for this show!!
Now that we've planned your week, we hope to see you out there! Oh and we can't forget, Emily's entire family is in town so this week couldn't get any better if it tried!

TONIGHT: together Pangea Record Release Party/In-Store @ 7PM!
Though they've only got 2013's Snakedog to their new name, together Pangea have been rocking butts for a good long time, playing shows all over So Cal. Alongside almost every local band you can think of, they've slowly but surely garnered a frenzied following in DIY scenes at home and abroad. After the release of their Snakedog single earlier this year (one of OV's faves) they participated in Burger Record's epic "Burgerama Caravan of Stars" tour this fall, spreading their teachings of raw, unpredictable and intelligent rock throughout the U.S.
Home once again, these dudes are set to release their newest album, Badillac, on Harvest Records January 21st. Now while a punk streak has always run through the band's core, Badillac looks to turn away from what bassist Danny Bengston calls the "punky bubblegum vibe" that the band feels they've been lumped in with through their association with Burger Records, and move towards songs that are "a little more melancholy, a little heavier, a little darker." Citing influences from Pete Seeger to 90s giants Weezer & Smashing Pumpkins, Badillac looks poised to push together Pangea both towards new sonic territories, but also closer to their core identity. What that identity might be, no one knows, but together Pangea plan on embodying it completely with their unique blend of fist-pumping hooks, ragged ambivalence and waves of distortion that will send you back all the way to 1992. We seriously can't wait.
Now these dudes command a pretty big audience, so we're only gonna be guaranteeing attendance for the first 50 pre-orders of Badillac (it comes with a free cassette!) on our online shop. So if you wanna make sure your night is filled with the sweet, sweet music of together Pangea, get those orders in ASAP! The show starts right at 7PM and is gonna be absolutely bonkers. Don't believe us? Give a listen to latest single "Snakedog" below! See you soon!

NEW RELEASES: Kim Deal's Solo Series - 3 New 7" for sale!
Origami Vinyl is super stoked to be one of the few stores in the country to be offering Kim Deal's new Solo Series - Walking With A Killer / Dirty Hessians 7", Hot Shot / Likkle More 7", and Are You Mine? / Wish I Was 7". You know her psychedelia, surf, and noise rock from The Pixies and The Breeders, but her solo stuff gives listeners a more intimate experience while keeping the same attitude that made us fall in love with Kim decades ago.
Walking With A Killer/Dirty Hessians shows off Kim's heavy bass influence, while Hot Shot/Likkle More has a calm and relaxed attitude with some mellow guitar parts and Are You Mine?/Wish I Was doesn't hold back any feelings and is beautifully relaxing.
Needless to say, these records are a rare and beautiful find that won't be here for long, so get them while you can at our online store:

TONIGHT: LA Font In-Store @7PM!
OV likes LA Font. You might even call them our buds. Their muscle-y, 90s indie rock sound is one of our favorites, and we've been all about them since their debut EP The American Leagues in 2010. Now fresh off of their first LP Diving Man, LA Font look like a band on the upswing, getting shoutouts from VICE and a #3 spot on Buzzbands.LA's top local albums of 2013. We feel like proud parents. Or at least friends that are like "nice job dude." That's why we're super stoked to have them here in out loft tonight and we really hope you can come listen in with us!
The show gets going at 7PM and there are rumors of Little Caesar's & Sriracha, so you better get here right at 7! While you're getting in the mood, give a listen to their newest single "Diving Man" below! See you soon!

TONIGHT: Dante Elephante In-Store @ 7PM!
Tonight we have Dante Elephante performing in our loft at 7PM!
Hailing from our neighbors up in Santa Barbara, Dante Elephante succinctly matches and defies the sounds of their hometown. While surf rock rhythms and guitar tones sway all over their latest EP German Aquatics, the band backs these sounds with a nervous energy and jump that's made more for dancing in a club than swinging in a hammock. This sort of energy shines through in their single "Kogi," which happens to be one of Christine's favorite 7" of 2013! So between Christine's recommendation and their excellent sound, we couldn't let them come through L.A without stopping by our loft. Thankfully, they'll be here tonight at 7pm!
So grab a couple friends and stop by the shop tonight at 7 for some great music and friends! Need to check Christine's taste? Give a listen to "Kogi" below and we'll see you tonight!

TONIGHT: Paul Bergmann & The Fair Moans @ 7PM!
Tonight we have Paul Bergmann & The Fair Moans performing in our loft at 7PM!
Even though it's usually sunny here in L.A, every once a while the fog rolls in and everything gets a little quieter in the city. For folk/americana singer Paul Bergmann, this is his weather. Headlined by his strong baritone voice, Paul's dark country songs call to mind Scott Walker or Townes Van Zandt. Behind him, The Fair Moans play cinematic Western compositions, giving the whole affair a sense of weight and timelessness that match perfectly with Paul's stories about demons and forgotten dreams. It's wonderful music for cold January days and we're quite excited to see him perform songs from his new album 1, in our loft night at 7PM!
Get yourself in the mood for tonight by listening to 1 single "Sorrow Song" belo. See you soon!

TOMORROW: Premiere Party BRUNCH! Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings "Give The People What The Want"
We're so excited to kick off the new year with a very special premiere party tomorrow at 12PM! For our first event of 2014, we're going to be serving you brunch while we premiere the new album from Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings!
Titled Give The People What They Want, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings' newest is born from the knowledge that only years of relentless touring and collaborating can bring to the table. Featuring the unbridled soul and punch you've come to expect ever since their emergence in 2002, Give The People What They Want promises to be an album whose funk grooves & sweet hooks will stay in your head and heart for days on end.
To make sure the new year is extra sweet, our friends and neighbors over at Taza will be providing a wonderful spread of coffee and pastries! They've been serving our favorite cuppa for about a year now and have become our go-to spot when we need a caffeine fix. We love Taza and are stoked (no, that's not the coffee speaking) to be working alongside them as we spin Sharon's newest album. It's a match made in heaven!
It gets better: tomorrow's brunch will be the first time you can hear the album in its entirety, anywhere! Not only that, but we'll be the only store in LA to be premiering the record that day! We've also got a test press of the album to give away, some very limited edition 7"s for anyone who pre-orders the album & some Daptone slipmats - these will only be available the day of the party!
Alright, that was a lot of excitement. Take a breather and when you're ready, give a listen to lead single "Retreat!" off of Give The People What They Want below. Phew!

TONIGHT: OV + The Echo present FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) Fest 2014!
Now that NYE is over, its about time to get those New Year's Resolutions in order, and we at Origami want to help you out. Our resolutions almost always include "listen to more new music," and we think you probably feel the same, so we're throwing a party to help you get ahead of the game this new year.
It's called FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) Fest and it's happening tonight at 8PM in both the Echo AND Echoplex! Alongside The Echo, Echo Park Rising & DoLA, OV will be presenting you with a bunch of bands we think are gonna blow up next year for dirt cheap. It's gonna be 2 levels of music, some of the coolest bands in the area, and a plethora of good vibes and beer! We can't think of a better way to get a head start on your 2014 resolutions!
Bands include:
Avid Dancer, Bogan Via, Fever The Ghost, Hindu Pirates, Kera & The Lesbians, Tall Tales & The Silver Linings, Santoros, Lo Fang, Liphemra, Wet & Reckless, Spazzkid & more!
Check out the full deets for the show and a bunch of awesome tracks from this year's bands below:
FOMO Fest 2014
Fri, January 3, 2014 || 8:00 pm || The Echo & Echoplex || $8.00 adv / $10.00 dos
Avid Dancer:
"Avid Dancer, where the sounds of the '60s and '70s — shimmering and tremeloed guitars, vocal hooks and AM radio-ready motifs — get a gentle kick in the behind, an update for these times" -- Buzzbands
Bogan Via:
“…the self-titled debut EP from these Phoenix, AZ natives proved to be in no shortage of charm… The pulsating and ominous electronics paired with Miller’s ghostlike soprano give an almost otherworldly feel.” -- Consequence of Sound
Fever The Ghost:
"Everything I can imagine writing about Fever the Ghost’s acid-drenched psych-pop involves hallucinogenic drugs. Or what was on the turntable that one weekend you experimented with them. (Ahem.) Or how influences like the Seeds, the Electric Prunes, Procol Harum, the Doors and David Bowie run through the L.A. quartet’s music, which is sonically like aiming a can of spray paint at Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti." -- Buzzbands
Hindu Pirates:
"... a unique blend of salty surf rock, gut-wrenching blues, and upbeat garage rock that you can’t help but dance to. ... citing influences such as Howlin’ Wolf, The Rolling Stones, The Velvet Underground, and The Strokes, Hindu Pirates harness the hooks and choruses of carefully crafted pop songs, and deliver them with uninhibited, explosive garage-rock energy." -- Ambiguous Music
Kera & The Lesbians:
"On “Gypsy Punk,” the first song the quintet has revealed from a forthcoming EP, Armendariz wails with notable élan, chewing up the lyrical scenery as her bandmates shift rhythms, instrumentation and, possibly, musical epochs." -- Buzzbands
Lo Fang:
"The description "James Blake with strings instead of electronics" is both reductive and not entirely accurate, but as a thumbnail description of Lo-Fang — brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Matthew Hemerlein — you could do worse." -- SPIN
Santoros:
Tall Tales and the Silver Lining:
“A carefree mix of country folk, with simple guitar strums that mingle playfully with spare rhythms and sweet harmonies.” -- NPR
Liphemra:
"Drawing the name from the concept of “ephemera,” Marsico’s solo project is an appropriate amalgam of mysteriously ambient swirls with songs like the haunting yet pulsating 'Young.'" -- Buzzbands
Wet & Reckless:
"Edgy girl-group stylings lean toward the punk and pointed rather than the pretty and predictable" -- Buzzbands
Spazzkid:
"He’s taken something that isn’t accessible to everyone—that is, Japanese pop—and morphed it into an upbeat number anyone can understand." -- Pitchfork
