It's not just the first full week of spring, IT'S SPRING BREAK!! Which means it's time to see sick concerts EVERY SINGLE NIGHT! As swarms college students descend on LA (which, by the way, made the top ten list for Spring Break destinations) the traffic will be worse, but the events will be nothing short of epic!
This week, we have a list of events that starts strong and ends with a bang. SO if you are looking for the best way to spend your Spring Break, or for just a way to unwind after your long day of real-world jobs, we have the inside scoop.
Our neighbors at The Echo are throwing a sick party with a live band this Tuesday. White's blossoming solo career went from zero to sixty in what seems like 3 seconds flat. He has spent the last year touring all over Europe and the U.S, playing festivals like Glastonbury and Primavera, and in the end worked himself to shingles. White's second album Fresh Blood was released on March 15th, which makes it almost as fresh as it gets. His sound is comfortable and fraught, troubling and delightful all at the same time. White has definitely avoided the sophomore slump, and his new album is the perfect sound track to those long restless insomnia-filled nights we all have, but thanks to White, at OV we are hoping those restless nights come along more often just so we have an even better excuse to listen to Fresh Blood on repeat.
Check out Matthew E. White with the fragile and seductive sounds of Wilsen Tuesday at 8:30pm.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 25th: Lust for Youth and Marshstepper at Jewel's Catch One
The Church on York never fails to impress, and this week is no different with Lust for Youth, Marshstepper, Silent Servant, Dirty Beaches (DJ Set), and DINNER. This mini fest of fun is from 8-10 PM, and too be honest, we couldn't have picked a better line-up ourselves if we had tried.
The Danes in Lust For Youth have created a winner with International, it is truly a buoyant synth masterpiece, the lo-fi vibe has been ditched and the hooks are thrown front and center. However, don't think even for a second that just because the new album released on Sacred Bones Records has some pop sensibilities that it lacks the deeply introspective moments we love from Lust For Youth. Expect a lot of bang for your buck on this one.
THURSDAY, MARCH 26th:
Jens Kuross Presents: Nobody's Pretty at the Bluewhale
If you have been event hopping and following our list up to this point, you need a night to relax a little. Well, a night of garage jazz sounds like the perfect remedy. Nobody's Pretty has a raw, unfinished, pure sound, and even though it may lack the polish of more traditional jazz, it lacks no sophistication. Asymetrical percussion, neo-soul bass lines help to create a sound with elegance and sonic ingenuity. Nobody's Pretty is sure beautiful, and it's not one to be missed. The event goes from 9 to midnight at the Bluewhale, a live jazz bar in the heart of Little Toyko. With ambiance and music like this, we challenge you not to be replenished for a killer weekend.
FRIDAY, MARCH 27th:
Sonny & the Sunsets, Hinds, and Colleen Green at the Echo
How could we make a Spring Break list in LA without some mention of a sunset? Sonny & the Sunsets are the perfect example of a "west coast thing". Instantly at the first note you are hit with surf, sand, and campfires under the stars. The Sunsets are a rotating group, so you are in for a surprise, because you never know who will be in the band this Friday, and the only way to find out is to be there!! This band has created a totally gnarly busted beach pop sound, with a laid back style mixed with some extremely complicated lyrics and vocals. This band shreds, not doubt, dude.
Joined by Hinds, a band of babes straight from Spain, and Colleen Green, with a pop sound track for all the days you spend in a Daze.
Hawaiian Shirts and sunscreen aren't required, but to be real, it would be a great addition!
SATURDAY, MARCH 28th:
Panache Spring Fling with secret guest at The Echo
MAN, this is a big one. So many great bands in one place, I don't think you can actually justify missing this one. Jacco Gardner, The Entrance Band, Twerps, Happyness, Ultimate Painting, Endless Bummer, Jack Ladder & the Dreamlanders, and Dream Boys. Just, WOW.
The Dutchman, Jacco Gardner, creates a melodic blend of colors and sensibilities that will transport you to somewhere far far away, and his new album Hypnophobia is to die for. The cheeky, charming, international pop champions Twerps just released a new album, and let us tell you, you want to catch these Aussies while they aren't down under.
There are really just too many fantastic bands at this event, and it's a perfect way to dance the last Saturday of Spring Break away. We will see you there!
Hailing from East LA, The Bloodhounds have mixed together their own unique sound, and its something that you won't hear anywhere else! Imagine a little bit of Blues, R&B, rock n' roll, a hint of latin groove, and a little bit of a punk edge.
The Bloodhounds can often be found on the streets of LA, delighting large crowds with their signature sounds and homemade instruments from household items. Their blues-belching debut album, Let Loose!, released on Alive Records is making waves all over Los Angeles. The Bloodhounds are a bit of anomaly today in the pro-tools electronic era of bands today, they have found the true spirit of 60s rock n' roll with real soul and rhythm.
If you don't know them, you should. Catch them TONIGHT rockin' OV at 7 PM!! Don't be late!
RedRumsey is swinging into the loft today at 7 PM, you should too!!
RedRumsey, hailing from Olympia Washington, has been a project of Vern Rumsey for some time now, yet never the priority when Unwound and Long Hind Legs were around. Vern has been writing songs and playing them on RedRumsey on and off since 2000. RedRumsey became an outlet for Vern to turn to, never on the front burner but never dying. RedRumsey is a collaboration: sometimes an acoustic solo, sometimes with electronics, sometimes with guest players, or even all three. Vern claims that RedRumsey is a more organic version of Long Hind Legs, and its a band he now wants to prioritize.
RedRumsey wants to make a lasting experience, and something that is unique and new every time you see them live. The Compass Rose EP is hot off the press, just being released on March 8th. What's even cooler? Its limited edition, only 100 made, and the covers are eco-friendly and hand stamped. These EPs are straight from the heart of Vernon Rumsey.
Why not start your list of experiences with RedRumsey today?? It's going to be one for the books!
Making this list I started thinking to myself: “Damn! I’m so
lucky to live in a city where cool shit happens EVERY NIGHT!” Sure I’m tired
all the time and have no more money because of this place, but it’s TOTALLY
worth it. Los Angeles rules!!
This week starts with an indie-rock legend gracing
The Smell. RedRumsey – AKA Vern Rumsey of Unwound (!!!) – is playing one of our
favorite local all-ages DIY spaces alongside Rearranged Face (members of the
Mae Shi and Residual Echoes), David Scott Stone, and Kraig Grady. RedRumsey
will also be dropping by Origami this Wednesday for an early in-store
performance at 3 PM. Ditch work and join us for that one!
Tuesday, March 17th
Sufjan Stevens Silent Listening Party @ Origami, 6pm
When we launched the pre-order for the limited clear vinyl version of Sufjan’s new album ‘Carrie & Lowell,’ we were blown away by the response! We’re really excited to team up with Asthmatic Kitty Records to bring you a Silent Listening Party of the album. These are happening at very select record stores around the country so this is kind of a big deal! If you haven’t pre-ordered the album, you can do it here or in-store and we’ll automatically add you to the RSVP list for this really special event. When you show up, we’ll give you cordless headphones to listen to the album on your own while you peruse or just hang out. This will be the only way to hear the album before the internet gets it’s grubby hands on it, and before it comes out on 3/31! Space is limited, so you must pre-order the album to reserve your headphones!
Record Club @ El Prado
Once you've got that new release haul, you best be bringing your faves down to RCLA at El Prado to give it a public spin! The best place to hear what your local buds are digging, RCLA gives YOU the opportunity to spin your records and even snag a free drink in the process! The fun gets started at 9PM, so dig out those LPs and get ready for a night of great music!
Dub Club, LA’s long running weekly roots reggae
party run by mastermind Tom Chasteen, is once again taking over both The Echoand Echoplex. This week Chasteen is joined by DJ Boss Harmony and other guests
sure to tickle you reggae lovers’ earholes.
Two of my favorite dublab DJs, Suzanne Kraft and
Parker host their weekly musical takeover of El Condor, DINNER! Start your
weekend early with a journey through the outer-limits of TASTE and SOUND.
The good people with impeccable taste over at Mount Analogue are hosting the
11th edition of their revered Nuit Noire series at Jewel’s Catch One! This time we’re getting some amazing exclusive and debut performances by
dark techno luminaries like Shifted, Tommy Four Seven, Adam X, and many more.
There is NO better place to brood and dance at the same time!
John Doe
and Exene Cervenka of beloved Los Angeles punx, X are performing alongside Robyn Hitchcock at the First Unitarian Church! Sounds like a good opportunity
to pray to some true rock n’ roll deities!
Broken Water,
one of my favorite bands from the insanely fertile scene in Olympia, WA are
playing the Echo this Sunday for this weeks edition of Part Time Punks. Broken
Water play music in the tradition of northwest indie-rock greats like Unwound,
(good week for Unwound fans!!) with some seriously beautiful shoegazing
elements. Don’t sleep on this show!
Ever listened to Fransk Keytar Punk? Well, here's your opportunity to hear it live from CIKATRI$, straight out of Stockholm. Origami is lucky enough to be the first stop on their U.S Tour. These Swedes know punk, but don't take our word for it, take a listen! CIKATRI$ (or Scar in english) released their third EP "Aïe! Le trois" in 2014 on Sax Records, is so good it makes us want to learn French. Their brand of punk is lo-fi, 80s, slurred vocals, fast paced chord changes, hard hitting attitudes. Really everything you could ask for in great punk. Look out for the occasional trumpet or keytar solo, it gives a little extra spice that you may not expect.
CIKATRI$ is dropping by tonight at 7 PM, you really don't want to miss this one!!
Have you ever wondered what it might have sounded like if your favorite artists had written a Title Track for one of their albums?
Well, The Title Trackers are here to show you! As the name may suggest, the Title Trackers take classic albums without a title track, and come up with parody songs of what that title track may have sounded like.
What started off as a project to make each other laugh, turned into something much more for the Title Trackers. Lost Title Tracks released on March 10th is funny, but thats not all it is. It isn't nostalgic or an imitation of classic bands, its raw, energetic, off the cut, and passionate. The Lost Title Tracks amply shows how the greats influence musicians, but with a satyric twist on the larger than life personalities and quirks of musical heroes.
There is a story behind every song. Lost Title Tracks will conjure more than just humor. Check it out TONIGHT at 4 PM!!
