OV WEEKLY: The Quiet Before The FYF Storm
Monday, August 18th
Tete @ The Echo!
Making sure your summer keeps on rocking, The Echo have recruited local shoegazers Tete to cleanse you weekly from the grime of hot August days. Self-described as a "cult memory of My Bloody Valentine," Tete mix drone, shoegaze, metal and a taste for gummy worms into a sonic infiltration unit whose only goal is to blow you away. It's a beautiful noise when it all comes together and we hope we can see y'all there every Monday this summer! The guitars start wailing at 9PM, so make sure you aren't late!

New Releases Are A Gift Unlike Any Other! The Muffs Take Over RCLA!
Need something to do before the weekend? How about giving some new records a spin? This week we've got an awesome Julia Holter reissue, Benjamin Booker's smokin' hot debut LP, and the return of affordability to The Eels. A pretty good haul all around. Peep the blog in the AM for the full list!
After you've got all the vinyl goodies you can handle, stop by El Prado tonight for an RCLA event for the books: The Muffs Whoop Dee Doo album premiere party!
With Whoop Dee Doo, The Muffs return with their first album in over a decade and we are so stoked to spin it for ya first! As with every Muffs album, front-woman Kim Shattuck sticks close to her garage rock roots, showcasing everything that has made The Muffs one of our favorite female-led bands ever and a OV shop staple! Not only will we be listening to the album in its entirety, but The Muffs will also be there hanging out and spinning some records of their own! As with previous RCLAs, each purchase of Whoop Dee Doo will also come with a free drank as our little thank you. (The other rewarding aspect of the evening will come from Emily's inability to form words).
Not only are The Muffs going to be hanging out, but so are our homies Donut Friend! Fellow Muffs fans, they are just as excited as us for The Muffs new album, and to celebrate, they'll be giving away FREE DONUTS all night!! We love Donut Friend, and with one bite into their out-of-this-world alt-rock confections will have you pinching yourself in delight. It's sure to be an awesome evening with great music, friends and food, so you don't really have an excuse dude, come on down to El Prado at 9PM!

Benjamin Booker @ The Echo! The Zombies + Mystic Braves @ Santa Monica Pier!
After premiering his awesome debut LP last week, we are definitely gonna be seeing Benjamin Booker tonight when he takes the Echo by force! Hailing from the great city of New Orleans, Benjamin Booker is an up-and-coming artist that you don't want to miss out on. Like, for real. With his own brand of growling, high energy NOLA rock, Booker knows how to kick some serious butt.
Also on tap: As part of Santa Monica's awesome FREE summer concert series, OV alum Mystic Braves will be joining The Zombies at the pier this Thursday night! Talk about a double bill, huh? If you haven't heard of Mystic Braves, well then you ought to, because these dudes craft some of the grooviest, psychedelic jams that we know of. Their 2014 LP Desert Island has been one of our favorite local records of the year and we are super stoked to hear them alongside the stupidly legendary Zombies. Which by the way, if you haven't heard of them, we suggest buying Odyssey and Oracle, a dark room, some good headphones, and dedicating about a week of listening time. Anyways, tonight at the pier is gonna be awesome and we can't wait to see you there when Mystic Braves & The Zombies take the stage!

OV PRESENTS: Cloud Nothings + Metz TONIGHT & TOMORROW @ The Roxy!
Yes you read that right, OV is teaming up with FYF + Goldenvoice to present Cloud Nothings & METZ for two nights at The Roxy!
Released earlier this year, Cloud Nothings newest LP, Here And Nowhere Else could almost be called a "mature" record for the band based on its intense focus and production. Reigning in Attack on Memory's wilderness of noise for a wilderness of feeling, Here And Nowhere Else forces the listener to lean into lead singer Dylan Baldi's stories of angst and turmoil, providing new moments of engagement where once the band relied on walls of sound. However, the band still gets searingly loud and in-your-face across Here And Nowhere Else, but does so only in those moments of absolute necessity and catharsis. For the band's refinement and evolution of their sound, Here And Nowhere Else has grabbed stellar reviews across the board and looks poised to appear on many year-end lists. We've been digging it ourselves in the shop and can't wait to get wild with you tonight when the band hits the Roxy Theatre with METZ!
To get ready for the madness, take a listen to Here And Nowhere Else single "I'm Not Part Of Me" below! See you soon!

TONIGHT: FYF & Cinefamily Present Breadcrumb Trail (Slint) w/Neil DJing!
Neil says:
"In 1995 I was in my sophomore year in college. At that point I was mainly into heavy metal and alternative music. Tool, Faith No More, and Smashing Pumpkins were some of my faves. I had also started to discover hardcore music thanks to my roommate who played me Minor Threat, Swiz, Judge, and Fugazi. With those genres all coming together I had discovered and became a fan of a band called Helmet. I liked them, but wasn't a super fan. One thing they did have though was a very active chat room community on the internet. Each night while procrastinating my studies I would log on and talk to people about music. It became a daily obsession and I would learn so much about new underground bands that spanned all genres. One day a person mentioned a band called SLINT. I had never heard of them, and neither had most people in the chat room. But this person was swearing by them. A couple weeks later I flew out to Colorado to spend a week with my parents. We stopped off at a Best Buy and I headed straight for the music section while my parents were shopping. I decided to go look for this Slint band (mind you this was before things like youtube and streaming music online so I couldn't just listen to this music. I had to either buy it on CD or go to a store where they would let you listen before buying). Low and behold Best Buy had Slint's CD for "Spiderland" (which is crazy in hindsight that Best Buy even had indie music much less an obscure band's CD). I bought it with such excitement I couldn't wait to get in the car and give it a listen. We left the store and my parents put the CD in. After the 3rd song I was extremely confused. "What is this?!" I thought. It was kind of bumming me out actually. I was ready for riffs or some more formulaic form of music I had been used too. This was weird. No real traditional song structures. Spoken word over sporadic drumming and mountains and valleys of volume. I think we shut it off after the fourth song. I didn't know how to take it.
A couple weeks later I was back at school studying. I decided to throw the CD back on in my Discman, put on my headphones and give it another shot with undivided attention. It is then that I started to understand the approach. I was hooked. I was obsessed. It broke down everything I understood about how music was created, recorded, represented, and distributed. It opened up a huge can of worms for me. The radio was boring, MTV was bullshit, underground independent music was really where it was at. From there I became obsessed with Touch and Go, Jade Tree, Dischord, Sub Pop, and other small labels. I started going to so many more underground shows and I started buying 7"s from all the bands playing. I bought a record player and would go down to Rhino Records in Claremont and Bionic Records in Fullerton on a weekly basis. Most importantly, I starting taking music business classes in college that would lead to a career in the industry.
Slint was that band for me. They're records amaze me and surprise me to this day.
Over the weekend I was asked by my good buds Sean and Bennett over at FYF if I wanted to DJ at Slint's event on Wednesday knowing about this story and my fandom. It's come full circle for me and I couldn't be more excited.
If you can, please join me tonight at The Silent Movie Theater for Cinefamily's screening of "Breadcrumb Trail" a documentary about Slint that will feature a Q&A session with the Director, Lance Bangs, members of Slint and David Yow (Jesus Lizard). This will be a night I remember for the rest of my life."
Here are the deets:

OV PRESENTS: Future Islands TONIGHT @ CFAER!
Good news buds! Along with FYF, OV is proud to present Future Islands at the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock. Hailing from Baltimore, this synthpop band is known for their engaging and theatrical stage presence, especially from their vocalist, Samuel T. Herring. Needless to say this show is sold out, and people who were fortunate to snag a ticket are in for a crazy night. Having just announced their signing to 4AD, we were stoked to hear that they will release their new album Singles in March of 2014. We are looking forward to this album, especially after the masterpiece that was their last album, On The Water.
Here's what our friends at Ticketfly had to say about their previous album: "Future Islands' romantic synth sound scales new heights with On the Water, the Baltimore trio's most ambitious and fully realized statement yet. Built around a song cycle exploring love, loss, and memory, their latest album finds the band continuing to deliver pounding rhythms, swelling melodies, and undeniable hooks - but finding new ways to probe inner space and tug at hearts. Convening in March 2011 in Elizabeth City, NC's historic, waterfront Andrew S. Sanders House, vocalist Samuel T. Herring, bassist William Cashion, and keyboardist Gerrit Welmers lived together in a space that served as both studio and sleeping quarters. The band used this tranquil retreat to refine their most reflective and mature batch of songs to date, adding new material in the process. What emerged is a lush yet visceral album about two parallel journeys--one physical and one psychological. On the Water's narrator offers enough detail that their story feels personal, yet open enough that any listener can inhabit each twist and emotional pang as their own." Herring also just started working creatively with producer Chris Coady (Beach House, Yeah Yeah Yeah's, Grizzly Bear) so we can't wait to see what this album will entail!
Can't wait until the album drops? Give a listen to Singles first single "Seasons (Waiting On You)" below!
Opening for the talented trio is Vice Cooler, an artist known for mixing beats in a way in which he produces unique and distinct sounds. His strange (in a good way) sounds and variations of patterns and beats make for a very interesting musical experience, and his live performance is no doubt an even greater one. Needless to say this night will be a treat - it's a sold out event that's bound to be a crowd-pleaser!

OV PRESENTS: METZ, Batwings Catwings, Vinyl Williams 11/7
Origami Vinyl and FYF are up to some diabolical planning once again! This time we're presenting METZ at The Echo on Wednesday, November 7th at pm. If you purchase the new METZ LP from us, you get a FREE ticket to the show, which Batwings Catwings and Vinyl Williams are playing too!!!
Subpop just released METZ and this is what the label proudly proclaims of the band: "Metz play like one brutally heavy instrument with three heads, slashing heavy-gauge strings, bending guitar and bass necks in weird unison, along with what is probably the loudest drumming you’ve ever heard. It’s a return to everything that’s good about loud, ecstatic live music ... They play the instruments, the amps, and the room ... I’ve seen a hundred jaws drop within the first four measures of their set." Check out the video for "Wet Blanket" to pick up those heavy riffs.
As the great Sir Mixalot once said, JUMP ON IT! See you in the shop!
