2/24: Daniel Bachman/Derek Rogers In-Store @ 7pm
Depressed because you have work tomorrow? Turn that frown upside down and swing by OV tonight at 7pm to watch both Daniel Bachman (Tompkin's Square) and Derek Rogers perform for us in-store!
Bachman is visiting Echo Park all the way from his home in Virginia, and we are stoked to be hosting such a talented young dude! For any Folk/Americana fans, Daniel Bachman's got you covered with some of the craziest fingerpicking that "...brings a modern experimental spirit to traditional country, blues and folk guitar playing."
On the other side of the spectrum, we've got Bachman's comrade and synth master Derek Rogers. The only thing that you wil be able to uncover about Rogers online is his music, which adds to the mystery of this ambient/drone juggernaut who is pumping out stuff reminiscent of Brian Eno.
Below are two tracks from both Bachman and Rogers that'll get you ready for a night of genre hopping over at OV. Don't blow it by not coming and get here at 7 for some of that good stuff!

Death Hymn Number 9 + The Ugly Kids In-Store Tonight @ 7pm
February 23rd, 1896: The tootsie roll was invented by Austrian immigrant Leo Hirschfeld.
February 23rd, 2013: Death Hymn Number 9 and The Ugly Kids are coming to play an in-store at Origami at 7pm.
Coincidence? I think not! Which is why you should "tootsie roll" on down to OV tonight!
Death Hymn Number 9's sound could best be described as psycho-surfabilly. They've got elements that remind me of bands like The Shrine, The Cramps, and Nobunny, and it really revs us up here at OV. They recently made a bold statement on their controversial Facebook page stating: "...boring bands are out and super rad bands are in." I think they're on to something.
The Ugly Kids describe their sound as: "A tape deck stuffed with magic mushrooms and a warped Satanic Warmaster Tape." If you're a fan of lo-fi surfy garage pop, then this group of so-cal shredders are right up your musical alleyway.
So if you would like to eat an OV Sandwich prepared on Death Hymn and Ugly Kids artisan style bread, then we'll see you tonight at 7pm. In the meantime, stop being a kook and listen to Death Hymn Number Nine's "Gospel" and The Ugly Kids "With You" down below and we'll see you at the shop.

El Sportivo & The Blooz just put out a video for their single "Walking World" off of their newest LP "Nights And Weekends" (White Iris), which is a song about "...a hazy and romantic odyssey of the broken promises, big dreams, and words left unsaid that haunt most relationships."
Watch the video below and I guarantee you that you will be glued to your screen for the next 4 minutes, it's that good and it's that trippy. Once you have completed watching the video come down to OV at 8pm to watch these dudes rip!

Foreign Mothers In-Store tonight at 7!
Tonight we got something for all you lady punks out there because we have Austin TX's very own Foreign Mothers coming through the shop to play for us at 7!
I usually keep it pretty together when I'm listening to a band that comes in-store, but boy was I geeing out when I heard Foreign Mothers for the first time. They released their most recent LP, "Duh," last year on Thread Pull Records and it's a collection of nine songs that are "Pleasingly post-clang, bristling with ire and irony, [and] rhythmically aggressive..." The thing that I love about this band is there ability to even slow things down and create some thought provoking songs like "But Now" and "Magick Child, Magick Child," which you can listen to below.
Remember: 7pm. Origami Vinyl. Be there or be a quadrilateral rhombus.

2/16/13: Frank Maston In-Store tonight @ 7pm
It's February 16th, do you know what that means? It's Ice T's birthday! It also happens to be the day we have Frank Maston coming in to perform for us at 7pm, so come celebrate this momentous occasion at OV!
Maston just released his new LP "Shadows" through Trouble in Mind, and they hit it right on the head when they describe the new album:
"Brass, woodwinds, organs and piano mix with haunting melodies and eerie guitar lines...There are no artificial sounds on this record, and Maston plays them all himself...capturing the sounds naturally through the warm embrace of true analog gear."
One of the singles released on "Shadows" that I've been digging is "Young Hearts," because it sounds like a song in a Tim Burton movie. You know? Just trust me and give it a listen down below.

2/9/13: Mahgeetah In-Store @ 5pm
Remember the day when you bought your first six string at the five-and-dime and played it 'til your fingers bled? How about when you and some guys from school had a band and you guys tried real hard? Yeah, those were the days man, the summer of '69.
You know who has a similar story? The good old boys from the SFV that call themselves Mahgeetah! Oh yeah baby, that's right, these boys have grown up with each other and played together since they hit puberty, and today at 5pm they're coming through OV before they crush The Satellite with Incan Abraham and Cuckoo Chaos.
They just released a new record titled "Heavy Baby," and Dig In Magazine describes it as combining "...the richness of early blues and American roots with not only the large rock sound from the 1960s and 70s, but the integrity of a modern day indie act." Listen to the track "Twin Lakes" and rock that body from side to side. We'll see you at 5.

Pageants In-Store Tonight at 7pm!
There's a lot of buzz circulating on the internet about tonights Pageants in-store. Take for example this quote by the band which they posted on a page for the event appropriately titled "Origami Orgy": "We will be losing our Origami virginity and we CAN'T. WAIT."
Well we can't wait either! We're so excited to be having the group of Long Beach natives swing by the shop as they come hot off the release of their Tide 7", and you should be too!
In case you didn't know, Pageants is the brainchild of former Avi Buffalo member Rebecca Coleman along with friends Devin O’Brien and Dylan Wood. "Musings of the Tide," which you can listen to below, is one of the singles off of their new 7", and boy does it warm my heart. Whenever I play it the sun comes out.

Tonight 02/06/13: Jenny O In-Store @ 7pm
It's Wednesday aka Hump Day, and to get you through the rest of this week we've got a special in-store performance by Jenny O. tonight at 7pm, so get your rumps down here!
Jenny's newest album, "Automechanic," just came out yesterday on Holy Trinity Records and some of her methods of recording are pretty "Out of bounds" as Guy Fieri would say. During the making of the album her "... engineer Bryce Gonzales put contact mics in the exhaust manifold of a blown-out 454 Rat Motor," all because she wanted to pay homage to the Rockabilly sound that dominated American music for years. Pretty badass, right?
To rev up your engines, take a look at the teaser video for "Automechanic," and race on down to OV tonight at 7!

02/05/13: We Break Cameras In-Store @ 7pm/ Unknown Mortal Orchestra Listening Party @ 8pm
No, we're not going to be smashing cameras at OV tonight...we're going to be smashing skulls because We Break Cameras is going to be coming through OV at 7pm. To spice things up even further, were going to be premiering the new Unknown Mortal Orchestra record "II" (Jagjaguwar) at 8pm, with pizza and beverages for all who walk through our doors.
We Break Cameras is a rad band hailing from Los Angeles. Made up of members from Dante v. Zombies, Jail Weddings, & The Million Million, this garage supergroup has a sound that blends elements of psych, electronic, and kraut into one big pile of awesomeness.
Here's a mix of 6 songs that you can listen to that was put out by their label Innovative Leisure. After you listen to a few of the tracks (my personal favorite being "Make Out One") it'll be enough to convince you to come on down at 7!
To end the night, we got that new new from Unknown Mortal Orchestra. "II" is the follow-up to their 2011 self-titled banger of a record, and UMO has been hard at work recording and touring since then. Their newest single, "So Good At Being In Trouble," which you can view below, has some sexy R&B elements to it, and no doubt your going to be rumpshakin' with pizza and drink in hand when you hear the rest of the album. Take a listen to it, and get ready for a marathon tonight at OV that all starts with We Break Cameras at 7!
