IN-STORE: Criminal Hygiene TONIGHT @ 7PM!
Established at Olympian Family Restaurant in South Central, Criminal Hygiene have been tearing up venues since 2011, blasting out a mix of sounds that's equal parts FIDLAR and Hootenanny-era Replacements. Accurately described by Consequence of Sound as "balancing the evocative with the asinine," their debut album CRMNL HYGNE garnered positive reviews across the board and captured a band ready for something more. Now fresh off of their January residency at The Echo, Criminal Hygiene will stopping by our loft tonight at 7PM to pump out some snot-nosed gutter rock. We just hope the loft survives.
So if you're looking to get you blood flowing (hopefully only internally) stop on by Origami tonight at 7PM and get crazy with us! In the meantime, check out the band's special V-Day video for tonights performance!

OV WEEKLY: Luv Is Reel!
It's the second week of February. Which depending on a few factors, is either awesome or not so awesome. But no matter you circumstances, remember: OV WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU. So much that we made the cute little personal calendar of all the stuff we can do together this week. :3
Monday, February 10th (that's today!)
NO Album Preview! Kera & The Lesbians @ The Echo!
Firstly, we're just gonna get out our insane excitement for the new NO record, El Prado. We were all at the album release party last week giggling like little schoolgirls and are super-duper stoked for its release next Tuesday! KCRW just uploaded a stream of the new album online and we're gonna have it on as much as we possibly can. Check it out here and come give Sean a high-five next time you see him in the shop (which better be soon, he's leaving on another huge tour soon!).
In other news, The Echo's monthly residents Kera & The Lesbians will be jamming away in the Echo tonight at 9PM! If you caught their set at OV's FOMO Fest earlier this year, you know they're going places soon, and with the release of their latest album Year 23 (Lolipop Records), Kera & co. are riding a wave of good vibes. So get to the Echo ASAP! If you want a sneak peek at tonight's show, check out single "Snakes" below!
Tuesday, February 11th
New Releases, Pre-Orders & Rarities Oh My!
Is there really anything better than Tuesday new releases? We sure don't think so and one of Em's favorites this week is the new Afterhours LP Lowlife, out on Not Not Fun. As XLR8R notes, the electronic musician and radio DJ (he hosts a long-running 11-to-midnight radio show known as "Field Recordings of the Afterhours") takes much of his inspiration from the solitary atmosphere and melancholic mood of L.A's late-night/early morning hours. Check it out for yourself below!
If you're looking to the future, OV's got a slew of pre-orders going, including the new LP Lost In The Dream by The War on Drugs. The third album by these Philly natives, Lost In The Dream is ostensibly a tour record. Coming off the heels of 2011's Slave Ambient, The War on Drugs toured relentlessly, eventually becoming a bona fide rock ’n’roll band. That essence drives their newest LP, a 10-song set produced by Granduciel and longtime engineer Jeff Zeigler. Pre-Order now and guarantee your copy of the record on limited purple vinyl with a signed poster! Record ships on or before release date, 3/18/14. While you're waiting for your order to ship, give a listen to Lost In The Dream single "Red Eyes" below!
If you're looking for something a bit rarer, OV just snagged an awesome signed copy of Jeff The Brotherhood's tour only pressing of The Boys R Back In Town - #95 out of 300! It's up on our rarities wall and is in our online shop as well. We know you want it.
Wednesday, February 12th
OV's Tote Bag Contest Ends Soon!
If you've been keeping up with Neil's updates, OV's been looking for a new tote bag design! We've loved our tote bags designed by Nathan Bell but we're running low. So we want your designs! We're closing in on a winner, so if you've got a design to submit, get it in stat!
You must incorporate our unicorn logo, "Origami Vinyl" and "Echo Park, Calif." in the design, but other than that you'e got free reign. Bags will be printed white on black. Winner gets their design on our bag and their own bag filled with OV Goodies! Please submit designs to highfive@origamiorigami.com as quickly as you can! If you need our logos, shoot us an email and we'll get them on over to ya. Gosh isn't merchandising fun?!
Thursday, February 13th
Failure or Hospitality? It's a Win-Win!
Tonight's a good night for music. A real good night you could say. For one, Failure has reunited and is playing a sold-out show at the El Rey! Emily and Neil have had the day circled in red on their calendars and probably won't be able to sleep the night before. If you were lucky enough to snag tickets, please attempt to capture their excitement on film.
For those of us with slower trigger fingers, OV fave Hospitality is playing a super intimate set inside The Echo tonight. They might not be alt-rock juggernauts, but damn, their new LP is quality - we can't keep 'em in stock for more than a couple days! Don't believe us? Just give a listen to Trouble's first single "I Miss Your Bones" below. Wanna catch the show for free? We've got two pairs of tickets to give away, so share today's post on Facebook, tag OV in the post, and they're yours!
Friday, February 14th
THE BIG DAY (For Kick-Ass Music)!
In case you forgot, it's Valentine's Day (we're lifesavers aren't we?). While we won't pass judgment on the holiday, we will say it brings out the best in the L.A music scene. First off, we've got L.A locals Criminal Hygiene stopping by our loft at 7PM for a very special V-Day performance. But don't expect a set to slow dance with your honey - Criminal Hygiene's full-on assault is FIDLAR meets Hootenanny-era Replacements, not teddy bears & chocolates. Just try going cheek-to-cheek listening to "Rearrange Me" below. Yeah, thought so.
After that, there's a whole bevy of shows to make moves on, so check our faves below and get working on those Valentines (we suggest throwing them on stage with impassioned cries of affection for said band).
Touche Amore, mewithoutyou - Ukranian Cultural Center | $16
Spiritualized - The Theatre At Ace Hotel | $59
Tijuana Panthers, Cosmonauts - The Glass House | $12
John Talabot, Shit Robot - A Club Called Rhonda | $20
Saturday, February 15th
V-Day Hangover Cure: The Spires In-Store!
We just can't let V-Day have all the fun this week, so we've got Ventura natives The Spires in our loft tonight at 7PM! Their newest record, Eternal Yeah, continues their rock-solid mix of C-86, 90s indie rock and Flying Nun influences, putting forth 11 tracks that are just as cerebral as they are breezy. It's gonna be a sweet time and we hope you can make it! Check out single "Flames (You & I)" below!
Giveaways This Week!
Quilt @ Satellite 2/15 - 1 pair w/ purchase of new LP Held In Splendor
Hospitality @ The Echo 2/13 - 2 pairs
Keep an eye on our Twitter/Facebook to find out how to win!
Now that we've planned your week, we hope to see you out there! Also, we accept Valentines. If you are so inclined.

IN-STORE: Austin Leonard Jones TONIGHT @ 7PM!
Tonight we have Austin Leonard Jones performing in our loft at 7PM!
Austin Leonard Jones is doing his own thing. That's really the only descriptor I can give for his series of self-released tapes and records. Ostensibly a country/folk artist, ALJ's music contains the ghosts of Daniel Johnston and Harry Nilsson, but he mixes those sounds with tropicana beats and synth squiggles at every turn, creating a heady mix of sounds that floats by much easier than it should. It's disarmingly simple and difficult to pin down, and there's a very specific joy in trying to figure out what exactly this guy is doing. As part of a very short West Coast tour, Austin Leonard Jones will be stopping by Origami tonight at 7PM, and we're very excited to try and get a lock on his sound.
So if you're looking for something distinctly different to listen to, stop on by Origami tonight at 7 and join us for a night of great music! In the meantime, give a listen to track "Black Caiman" off his album Ponderosa below! See you soon!

IN-STORE: The James Apollo Five TONIGHT @ 6PM!
Tonight we have The James Apollo Five performing in our loft!
Hailing originally from Arkansas, but more accurately, a child of the road, James Apollo and his band thrive off of forgotten moments and places, mining dive bars and cheap hotels for every musical moment they're worth. Similarly, James & co. mine classic Americana instruments to create a blend of country and jazz over which James' low croon finds space to breathe and growl. Compelling in both its quieter and louder moments, their 2010 release, 'Til Your Feet Bleed brought the group praise overseas, and with the release of their newest LP Little War, Little Less James and his band have their eyes firmly set on home. We're excited to see what this talented group has up their sleeve and can't wait to share them with you tonight!
Opening for the band will be a solo set by Gabriel Hart from Jail Weddings, whose 2013 album, Meltdown: A Declaration of Unpopular Emotion was voted the #1 record of 2013 by L.A. Weekly. It's gonna be a great night!
In the meantime, give a listen to Little War, Little Less's first single "Blessed or Bust" below! See you soon!

PREMIERE PARTY: Incan Abraham "Tolerance" Album Premiere Party TONIGHT @ 7PM!
Tonight at 7PM, we're gonna be premiering Incan Abraham's newest record Tolerance two months before it's release date! It's gonna be a glimpse into the future you don't wanna miss!
Friends since kindergarten, the members of Incan Abraham (Giuliano Pizzulo, Teddy Cafaro, Spencer Mandel) channel their fingerpainted past in their debut LP, fusing Lost Boys tribal energy with guitar, synth, and harmony vocal soundscapes that arc and circle like bikes in desert washes. After spending college marooned on opposite coasts, the friends reunited on a whim in a secluded house in upstate New York for a weekend that turned into a month spent writing music and contemplating their shared histories of childhood escapism and pop nostalgia. Returning to their native Los Angeles, they seasoned their sound in the arid air and eclectic east side music scene, until a fateful encounter with their producer-to-be and sonic sherpa Lewis Pesacov (Best Coast, FIDLAR, Fool’s Gold). The resulting album “Tolerance” will be released on April 8th on White Iris Records. But Origami's got the scoop and will be playing their newest psych-pop jams way before anybody else!
So come on down to Origami tonight at 7PM and let the sweet, sweet sounds of Incan Abraham wash over you. It'll feel good, we promise. If you enjoy what you hear, why not snag an Origami pre-order while you still can? Each pre-order comes with a zine and a download code while supplies last. Ships 4/8/14. Now we know two months might be a long time, but if you come on by tonight at 7, I think Incan Abraham will make it up to you. Get a little taste of tonight's aural feast via Tolerance single "Concorde" below!

OV PRESENTS: The Belle Brigade TONIGHT @ The Echo + El Prado Pre-Party!
We are excited to be co-presenting The Belle Brigade tonight at The Echo! It's gonna be a great time and tickets are FREE, so there's no excuse to miss this awesome show! Before the show, The Belle Brigade will be stopping by Record Club at El Prado to DJ some tunes and start the night with a bang!
Here's what The Echo had to say about the talented duo:
"Founded by siblings Barbara and Ethan Gruska, The Belle Brigade’s music is artfully arranged, with enticing melodies and pop harmonies, fueled by the interplay of driving rhythms between Barbara’s drums and Ethan’s guitars. Both are gifted songwriters – finding inspiration in the works of Peter Gabriel, John Lennon, The Beach Boys, Sly Stone, Harry Nilsson and countless others."
The Belle Brigade’s self-titled debut (co-produced with Matthew Wilder) was hailed as one of the best albums of 2011 by PASTE. Ann Powers, writing for the Los Angeles Times, took note of the “memorable voices and considerable charisma within songs that gleam with hooks and pour over with earnest emotion” while Newsday praised the album’s “sun-kissed ’70s SoCal sound” and SPIN observed, “The brother and sister team from LA, bring beautiful harmonies to their quirky folk rock.”
Their new album, “Just Because,” was recorded with engineer and co-producer Shawn Everett and mastered by the legendary Bob Ludwig. It will be released by ATO Records on March 25th, 2014."
So stop on by El Prado at 9:30 to catch The Belle Brigade spins some tunes and then follow 'em on over to the Echo and catch their new set! If you feel like getting your hands on a physical copy of "Ashes," OV's gonna be the only store in L.A stocking the 7" starting tomorrow! Looks like you ought to stop on by here too then! OV PRESENTS: Future Islands TONIGHT @ CFAER!
Good news buds! Along with FYF, OV is proud to present Future Islands at the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock. Hailing from Baltimore, this synthpop band is known for their engaging and theatrical stage presence, especially from their vocalist, Samuel T. Herring. Needless to say this show is sold out, and people who were fortunate to snag a ticket are in for a crazy night. Having just announced their signing to 4AD, we were stoked to hear that they will release their new album Singles in March of 2014. We are looking forward to this album, especially after the masterpiece that was their last album, On The Water.
Here's what our friends at Ticketfly had to say about their previous album: "Future Islands' romantic synth sound scales new heights with On the Water, the Baltimore trio's most ambitious and fully realized statement yet. Built around a song cycle exploring love, loss, and memory, their latest album finds the band continuing to deliver pounding rhythms, swelling melodies, and undeniable hooks - but finding new ways to probe inner space and tug at hearts. Convening in March 2011 in Elizabeth City, NC's historic, waterfront Andrew S. Sanders House, vocalist Samuel T. Herring, bassist William Cashion, and keyboardist Gerrit Welmers lived together in a space that served as both studio and sleeping quarters. The band used this tranquil retreat to refine their most reflective and mature batch of songs to date, adding new material in the process. What emerged is a lush yet visceral album about two parallel journeys--one physical and one psychological. On the Water's narrator offers enough detail that their story feels personal, yet open enough that any listener can inhabit each twist and emotional pang as their own." Herring also just started working creatively with producer Chris Coady (Beach House, Yeah Yeah Yeah's, Grizzly Bear) so we can't wait to see what this album will entail!
Can't wait until the album drops? Give a listen to Singles first single "Seasons (Waiting On You)" below!
Opening for the talented trio is Vice Cooler, an artist known for mixing beats in a way in which he produces unique and distinct sounds. His strange (in a good way) sounds and variations of patterns and beats make for a very interesting musical experience, and his live performance is no doubt an even greater one. Needless to say this night will be a treat - it's a sold out event that's bound to be a crowd-pleaser!

OV WEEKLY: 2014 Kicks Into High Gear!
Things have been a bit quiet here at Origami lately, but since last week's together PANGEA release show, the hits have been coming left and right! Here's a quick breakdown so you don't get left out in the cold!Tuesday, January 28th - Hospitality's Trouble hits OV! Dum Dum Girls Release Party!
We've been dying to hear this newest release from these Brooklyn upstarts, and the time is almost here!
The first thing you might notice about Hospitality's sophomore album "Trouble" is what you don't hear. The process of completing the album was, for the band, one of learning to accept silence, to let that empty space exist no matter what it might awaken or evoke. You could catch glimpses of these dark and unexplored places in the margins of Hospitality's 2012 self-titled debut, but they are the very heart of 'Trouble". If you listen closely, you can hear a band pushing against their own boundaries and limitations until they find the very air around them subtly but perceptibly changed. Listen HERE. Snag the record HERE.
Once you've picked the record up, head over to the Echo for the Dum Dum Girls record release party! We've been big fans of these ladies and they've been good friends since the beginning! We're so stoked to celebrate the release of Too True with them.
For the past few months, Christine and Emily have been pushing this 7" of the song, "Sanity" by The Beets frontman, Juan Wauters. He is finally releasing his full length solo album, "NAP North American Poetry" on Captured Tracks on Feb 4. We think it's so important that you get this record that we're offering a pre-order that comes with a signed poster. Juan is signing these exclusively for us and each one has a different message.. they're pretty sweet if you ask us. You can pick it up here. In the meantime, check out the single, Water.
Wednesday January 29th
Speaking of Captured Tracks, on Wednesday we're gonna head over to the Echo to see Mac Demarco. No explanation necessary.
Thursday January 30th
On Thursday afternoon, La Luna's will be doing some filming in the loft so come catch a couple songs while they play! La Luna's is a three piece garage rock/surf band with Sasha from Spindrift on vocals and currently, Patty Schemel on drums. Things kick off at 2 pm.
Our buddies, Reputante, are in town from NYC and are playing with Lola Wolf at the Echo on Thursday night. (Yes, we realize that all these shows are at the Echo but come on, they're killing it this week!) Listen to the sweet sweet sounds of James Levy's crooner voice and get excited for this show!!
Now that we've planned your week, we hope to see you out there! Oh and we can't forget, Emily's entire family is in town so this week couldn't get any better if it tried!
