Cold Cave Take-Over Origami Tomorrow + Tons of new stock!

From Matador (Cold Cave's Label)
"We here in New York City are a little tired of our west coast friends telling us about their recent streak of 80 degree days. It’s February. It’s supposed to be cold. It’s supposed to be dark. It’s supposed to be gloomy. Deal with it. So to combat the sunshine we’re sending a little bit of the East Coast over to Echo Park tomorrow night when Cold Cave takes over Origami Vinyl for a few hours before their show at The Echoplex.

The store will feature a wall of LPs curated by Cold Cave frontman Wes Eisold, some books and records from Eisold’s own Heartworm Press, a special DJ set/meet-and-greet from the band and free Colt 45.

So quit applying your sunscreen and get your February on."

Sounds fun right!

The lovers, the dreamers and Origami

Currently outside Origami Vinyl...

Chickens In Love

Over the last 2 months we have been working very closely with the great people over at the non-profit 826LA on helping them create a fundraiser for their free tutoring and workshop programs for children.

What came of it was a lyric writing workshop hosted by LA band The Submarines back in December, called Chickens in Love as coined by the kids. We asked some local musicians to donate time and come down to teach children the basics of lyric composition. Members of Kissing Cousins, Frankel, Hexham Heads, Nico Stai, and The Monolators split up the kids into 6 groups and each created a song of their own. You can see videos of most of them performing the songs at www.826la.com/chickensinlove. The site also allows you to vote for your favorite song/band by donating a dollar. Each dollar donated equals a vote. And a $30 pledge is Tax Deductible! The winning kids band gets the Gold Record and a rockin' ice cream social!

We then reached out to LA based bands to cover these kids songs and compile them to be released on a Limited Edition LP releasing later this Spring. The artists were extremely generous and really put a ton of love into their kids' song. The artists involved in this compilation are:

- Fiona Apple with Jon Brion and The Punch Brothers
- She & Him
- Cold War Kids
- Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
- Tim & Eric
- The Happy Hollows
- Summer Darling
- Dum Dum Girls
- The Growlers
- Crystal Antlers
- The Pity Party
- The Submarines

The songs will be compiled on a Limited Edition LP, CD and as a digital release on iTunes with all proceeds of sales going back to the extremely important free workshops and tutoring programs offered by 826LA. The LP can be pre-ordered now at www.826la.com/chickensinlove

In addition to all of this we will be hosting an 826LA mini-festival fundraising event on Saturday, March 6th at 1pm at the Echoplex in Echo Park with a good portion of these artists playing 20-30 minute sets along with their cover of their kids' song. The LPs, CDs, limited run posters and T-shirts will be available. Details and final line-up are still forthcoming, so stay tuned.

I have included the official Press Release as an attachment. We would really appreciate your help in spreading the word via Twitter, Facebook, Myspace and any other channels you may have at your disposal. We have also created a place where you can grab the Press Release, Banner Ads, and other guerilla items to post here

If you write for a magazine, blog, website, or paper, please get in touch with us!

"the sound of wall" opening TONIGHT + New Adds & Restocks

“the sound of wall”
installation + installation specific sound performance
by: (knee shy)
Tonight from 7-11pm

(knee shy) is a fun-loving art duo, and recent addition to the bulging rolodex of the Los Angeles art community. With their upcoming installation piece, “the sound of wall”, they plan to display their penchant for inclusive playfulness, as well as their love of the strange and beautiful.

The piece itself is essentially a large wall mounted string instrument to which most standard technical titles both do and do not apply. The 7 section unit contains in total 111 strings, some strung properly and others prepared with a variety of objects. The object is amplified both electrically and naturally, and fills the roll of several traditional instrument variants.

Guests are welcome to interact with the piece. For the opening of the installation, (knee shy) will also perform a sound piece composed specifically for the piece in it’s current tuning. It’s sure to be full of 4 handed plucking, bowing, string piano, and other extended technique action.

Tonight, along with the scheduled performance, (knee shy) will be joined by several musical guests. “the sound of wall” will be on exhibition and playable at Origami Vinyl from February 5th through March during normal store hours.
