Dear readers, Origami people.

Here is a video recap of our latest in-stores:

The Builders & The Butchers

Weave!

Make sure you are stop by this week for:
-Timber Timbre this Wednesday at 7pm,
-The Antlers the following day (Thursday) at 7pm,
-and a very special Origami Comedy night with Matt Braunger and special guests to be announced shortly.

Booyakasha!

7 and 7 is...

A Love song! Thank you Ashley from Jaxart for dropping off Henry Clay People 7-inches! This is one of the best local bands in my opinion, and they put on a great live show. So get familiar with these tunes, and also check out their as-yet CD-only full-length "For Cheap or For Free." And next time they play I will see you there!

Restocked:

Henry Clay People "Working Part Time" 7"

David Bazan (Pedro the Lion) put out a cool 7-inch with classic covers on it. This is that euphoric Dylan tune featured in "The Big Lebowski." Tasty like hyena.

David Bazan "The Man In Me" b/w "Hallelujah" 7"

Also, did you know that Grizzly Bear put out a 7" featuring Michael McDonald? Yep, he's on the B-side singing "While You Wait For the Others." You know what's even weirder? It's awesome. We have that too, so think about it.

Have a great rest 'o the weekend.

Love,

Origami

Road Report 2: NYC mayhem

I just wanted to give this little post a big movie title:) Greetings again from New York! Last week we (the Parson Red Heads) left cozy Echo Park for our first east coast tour. After playing New Jersey with Roadside Graves and getting our first taste of NYC, the tour continued with more shows and exploration in the big city.

After Googie's lounge on Monday we took the train to Central Park and walked about, visiting the ever-powerful, emotionally evocative John Lennon "Imagine" tribute. It was tasteful, you know? We dug it. That evening we made our way to Park Slope and found Union Hall, where we were treated so well! What an accommodating venue- a cozy fireplace and bookcases, great food and drinks, and an excellent music hall. We opened for the kindest bands in Brooklyn- Hymns and Ladybug Transistor- which were both a pleasure to watch performing to the home crowd. After the show we hung out with a man named Jessie, whose dad was in The Raspberries. Neat! And Adrian Grenier, the star of Entourage, bought our cds. He was a nice guy. After the show was another subway ride (we all like the subway!) back to Harlem, to our friend Jeremy's apartment. And, instead of going straight to bed and fighting jet lag, we put on Starship Troopers. Oh, baby!

Well! Today it's more exploration! We're going to record stores today, and getting some of those famous New York bagels. We're playing a special 7pm set tonight at Arlene's Grocery, and tomorrow at Northern Kingdom with Brittain Ashford. Come get a glass of wine and enjoy the mellow, harmony-laden folkery! And if you're feeling adventuresome come to Philadelphia on Friday- we're playing with east coast greats: The Roadside Graves and Cotton Jones, at the M Room. See you there, yeah?

ps- pictures will be posted on this blog when I get to a super-computer, or when I find someone to help me with that. I'm no techno-ace! But we have some good ones, and movies too!

JUST CONFIRMED: The Antlers in-store performance @ 7pm on Thursday, October 29th

That's right!!! The Antlers from Brooklyn are coming to Origami for a special stripped-down set @ 7pm Thursday, October 29th!!

Big thanks to Jess Phelps @ The Orchard and Paul @ Frenchkiss for making this all happen.

Check out The Antlers on MySpace

I AM that man!!!

Yes, it's true. I am making a special transmission from a galaxy far, far away, known as... New York City! Harlem, to be exact. And this galaxy rules!

As I previously mentioned, I play in a rock and roll outfit called The Parson Red Heads. You can peep that ice here (myspace.com/redheads). We are on our first east coast tour and I am here to keep any Red Heads Heads and/or Origamites updated on our adventures.

We've been playing shows with our good friends The Roadside Graves, an excellent band from these parts. We played their hometown's local indie bookstore, The Raconteur- what a great, relaxing evening! Many familiar faces as well as friendly new ones, all chilling out with a beer and enjoying the (mostly) acoustic show. The performance was followed by a party down the street at Graves drummer Colin's place. Rowdy singalongs on the upright piano, fiddle, guitars, etc. were so much fun (thanks, Jeremy!). We drank, sang, and made merriment until late into the night, and...ended up watching Teen Wolf. The perfect night-cap!

We've played a couple shows in New York now, one at Lit Lounge and last night at Googie's. Both have been excellent! Our folky local friend Linda Draper played the show with us last night- she is so talented and kind! Our set was another mellow one, which is common if you're performing as a three piece acoustic/electric act:) We just had wine glasses on a little stool by the microphones, played our harmony-driven songs for a few friends, and had a lovely time. After us a few more people showed up (looking a bit like the cast of Rent), and Grace McClean took the stage. You'll have to look her up- I'm not sure I have the words to describe such a...unique performer!

The next couple days will be spent in Brooklyn and the surrounding area. Tonight we get to play Union Hall with Hymns and Ladybug Transistor! We are looking forward to it. Before the show we're going to go explore with our city-savvy friends. Record shops, vegan diners, central parks, and the spirit of New York!

Love,

Sam,, Brette, Evan

Ps- I took lots of pictures! And they're on their way. I also have video of Roadside Graves playing in the bookstore! I'm going to try and post that in the next couple days, when I bring the necessary cables up to the apartment we're staying in. Wow! People shouting really hard at each other! Harlem is intense! Oh that reminds me: once in awhile people totally peg us for west coasters:)

Tonight @ the Origami Vinyl Loft...GOSPEL GOSSIP!!!

We are very excited to announce Gospel Gossip from Minnesota @ 7pm tonight! We will also have some free Tecate for those of age...

Here's what peeps have been saying!

Pitchfork Media
"certainly flawed"

Redefine Magazine
"Sing Into My Mouth is full of whimsical bridges that burst into a dancing climax. This album will keep you on your feet or, at the very least, will keep you smiling. The band is so in sync that the album seems flawless."

Space City Rock
"It's a total absence of regard for boundaries but still very defined in what it is. That's the overall feeling of Sing Into My Mouth, that it defies its own shoegazer label to be something that can be truly awesome"

Bitch Magazine
"It's fuzzy, pretty, and uberrhythmic—that midtempo, incredibly danceable pop that Fugazi and Nation of Ulysses popularized in Washington D.C., in the early '90s. Lead singer Sarah Nienaber does a remarkable job evoking her forebears."

Mustang Daily
"Listening to Gospel Gossip is like finding a 20 in the wash. Actually, scratch that - it's like finding a kilo of Columbian non-dairy creamer in the wash."

The Big Takeover
"Sarah Nienaber's vocals are somewhere between a Mazzy Star delicacy and a Siouxsie Sioux sexuality. Now picture those vocals floating on a mix of goth wave tribal roll and No Wave noise distortion, but tied together in a melodic-pop picnic basket. It's hard to think of anything that's more fun to listen to right now."

City Pages - Best New Band
"Drawing on old-soul pop awareness they must have accrued in their past lives, these wunderkinds have made a high-wattage debut that harkens to the finer, headier days when brainiacs like the Velvet Underground and New Order were called party music."

Reveille Magazine
"Most great albums require multiple spins in order to truly grasp the scope of where they're going. Gospel Gossip’s debut, Sing Into My Mouth is no exception. Its 13 tracks range from well-developed songs to short Casio-keyboard drumbeat ditties to gritty, distortion-based instrumentals. Ultimately, the 45 minutes of shoegaze fuzz from these Northfield-based musicians is filled with promise."

City Pages - Gospel Gossip Interstate Transport and Shoegaze, Ltd.
"Sing into My Mouth is an auspicious debut, a record that feels like a harbinger of bigger, hairier, more sprawling albums to come, and thus a record that future fans can hold up as the beginning of something brilliant, should it work out that way."

Star Tribune
"...the quartet has become yet another band of shockingly young newcomers playing refreshingly ageless rock music..."

MFR
"But one can clearly tell from the life and energy bursting from these tracks that Sing Into My Mouth is anything but complacent. These songs start off in a simple fashion and then slowly, steadily, they add more parts and melodies until the inevitable anthemic climax. By that point, whether it's the build-up to synth lines in "Revolution In Physics" and "Wind" or the jangly coda of "Shadows Are Bent", one feels as if they, with the band, are engaging in what alcoholic musicians might call a sonic moment of clarity."

Parson Red Heads tour blog

Hey Origamites!

Sam here. In addition to working for this fine store, I play in a local band called The Parson Red Heads. Here is a somewhat silly picture of us:

Tomorrow we go not-so-local...we are leaving to tour the east coast for two weeks! I've been invited to keep a tour blog on ye ole Origami blog, in order that I may keep in touch with my friends and neighborhood, and to share any interesting stories that may transpire out on the road of rock and roll.

Well, more folk, actually. This tour's a three-piece edition of the Parsons- I'm playing guitar and singing, so is Evan, and Evan's wife and drummer extraordinaire Brette is playing percussion and adding harmonies. It's quite a different sound than the normal show, but I am happy we get to tour this way because I think this line-up really warrants its own showcasing. The harmonies are really brought to the fore and we get to show a softer side of the music and still have a lot of (quieter) fun. And away we go!

Our send off show was last night. We had the privilege of opening for Robyn Hitchcock and the Venus 3 at Spaceland! His bandmates were stellar players and great human beings (including Peter Buck on guitar!). I even jumped onstage with them, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings for the Soft Boys classic "I Wanna Destroy You" and played tambourine! What a moment!

Tomorrow we are flying to Newark and beginning the official adventure. Please wish us safe travels, and I will type to you soon.

Take care, give care,

Sam

That's right folks, It's the 1st Tuesday of the month, which means it is 7" night!! Always the most interesting and chaotic of the Record Club nights, 7" night is an open mic sort of deal, where you bring a stack of 45s and tell us what to play. So bring a handful and have some beers with us, k?

If you aren't already a friend of ours on Twitter, please start following us @OrigamiVinyl. We blurb about each record we play, who's picked it and why in real time! It's a fun little in-the-know treat, while you drink at the bar or watch from home!

Your hosts Neil and Sean from Origami Vinyl will also play you some stuff that we think is kinda neat. Our sign-up sheet will be at the bar for those that would like to participate in a future record club night.

"Best New Back-To-The Future Vinyl Record Store" according to LA Weekly

LA Weekly has just put out their annual Best of LA issue and Origami made the cut! Man we are just overjoyed that they think so highly of our little shop. Here's what they had to say...

"It kind of boggles (and tickles) the mind that in the tech-infected 21st century there would exist this category. Seems like only yesterday the major record labels conspired to destroy the LP in order to profit off of the more lucrati— er, better sounding, compact disc. So, as vinyl enthusiasts, it is with great joy (and irony) that we celebrate the best new vinyl store in L.A., Origami on Sunset, as we dance on the grave of the CD. Yes, there are still more Starbucks outlets in Westwood than there are fresh vinyl record stores in the metropolitan area, but the gems that have sprouted — and remain — are thrilling. Freak Beat in the Valley, Vacation in East Hollywood, Territory BBQ & Records, Fingerprints in Long Beach, the jumbo and all-consuming Amoeba in Hollywood, and Origami in Echo Park are the music lover's equivalent of an antiquarian bookstore. A tiny shop just down the street from the Time Travel Mart, Origami's about the size of Amoeba's entryway, with a selection the size of Amoeba's soundtrack section. But within those racks are rows and rows of new LPs from around the world and across time. Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band's oeuvre sits near German proto-punks Can, alongside new squares from Mika Miko, HEALTH, Silversun Pickups and Rainbow Arabia. A little bookshelf contains the week's flyer population, cellophaned LPs line the walls, each a nice-sized work of art. When it comes to vinyl shops, it turns out, bigger isn't always better."

Thanks Guys!!!
