TONIGHT: Dead Western In-Store @ 7PM!

Tonight we have Dead Western performing in our loft at 7PM!

If the picture above doesn't give you enough of a hint, Troy Mighty, the man behind Dead Western, is a strange fellow. Firmly within the freak/psych-folk movement on the West Coast, Troy's music mines both the rich sounds of his SF homeland, but also more avant-garde compositions. Above it all, Troy's voice croons like a melting Bing Crosby, if such a thing is possible. It's music that spans so many genres it transcends most of them. We're super excited to have him in our loft and hope you'll stop by tonight at 7PM and join in on the good times!

Need a preview? Give a listen to Dead Western track "Not Really Here At All" below and we'll see you tonight!

TONIGHT: Froth In-Store @ 7PM!

Tonight we have Froth performing in our loft at 7PM!

Hailing from El Segundo, Froth started as a joke between El Segundo High graduates Joo-Joo Ashworth & Jeff Fribourg. However, after a string of successful local shows, Froth decided to release an LP, Patterns, earlier this year. Featuring Ashworth's hazy vocals over a combination of 60s psych and surf sounds, Patterns perfectly matches the band's name and sounds like a delicious mix of seawater and Nuggets-era rock. Recently, they've been headlining a December residency at the Bootleg and look like a band on the rise. We're huge fans of their sound here at Origami and are looking forward to a fuzzed-out performance in our loft tonight at 7PM!

So come on down to the shop, grab some extra presents for yourself, and enjoy some great music! Looking for a sneak peak? Give a listen to Patterns single "Lost My Mind" below. See you tonight!

1/03/14: OV + The Echo present FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) Fest 2014

Now that Christmas is over, its about time to get those New Year's Resolutions in order, and we at Origami want to help you out. Our resolutions almost always include "listen to more new music," and we think you probably feel the same, so we're throwing a party to help you get ahead of the game this new year.

It's called FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) Fest and it's happening Friday January 3rd in both the Echo AND Echoplex! Alongside The Echo, Echo Park Rising & DoLA, OV will be presenting you with a bunch of bands we think are gonna blow up next year for dirt cheap. It's gonna be 2 levels of music, some of the coolest bands in the area, and a plethora of good vibes and beer! We can't think of a better way to get a head start on your 2014 resolutions!

Bands include:
Avid Dancer, Bogan Via, Fever The Ghost, Hindu Pirates, Kera & The Lesbians, Tall Tales & The Silver Linings, Santoros, Lo Fang, Liphemra & more!

Check out the full deets for the show and a bunch of awesome tracks from this year's bands below:

FOMO Fest 2014
Fri, January 3, 2014 || 8:00 pm || The Echo & Echoplex || $8.00 adv / $10.00 dos

Avid Dancer:
"Avid Dancer, where the sounds of the '60s and '70s — shimmering and tremeloed guitars, vocal hooks and AM radio-ready motifs — get a gentle kick in the behind, an update for these times" -- Buzzbands

Bogan Via:
“…the self-titled debut EP from these Phoenix, AZ natives proved to be in no shortage of charm… The pulsating and ominous electronics paired with Miller’s ghostlike soprano give an almost otherworldly feel.” -- Consequence of Sound

Fever The Ghost:
"Everything I can imagine writing about Fever the Ghost’s acid-drenched psych-pop involves hallucinogenic drugs. Or what was on the turntable that one weekend you experimented with them. (Ahem.) Or how influences like the Seeds, the Electric Prunes, Procol Harum, the Doors and David Bowie run through the L.A. quartet’s music, which is sonically like aiming a can of spray paint at Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti." -- Buzzbands

Hindu Pirates:
"... a unique blend of salty surf rock, gut-wrenching blues, and upbeat garage rock that you can’t help but dance to. ... citing influences such as Howlin’ Wolf, The Rolling Stones, The Velvet Underground, and The Strokes, Hindu Pirates harness the hooks and choruses of carefully crafted pop songs, and deliver them with uninhibited, explosive garage-rock energy." -- Ambiguous Music

Kera & The Lesbians:
"On “Gypsy Punk,” the first song the quintet has revealed from a forthcoming EP, Armendariz wails with notable élan, chewing up the lyrical scenery as her bandmates shift rhythms, instrumentation and, possibly, musical epochs." -- Buzzbands

Lo Fang:
"The description "James Blake with strings instead of electronics" is both reductive and not entirely accurate, but as a thumbnail description of Lo-Fang — brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Matthew Hemerlein — you could do worse." -- SPIN

Santoros:

Tall Tales and the Silver Lining:
“a carefree mix of country folk, with simple guitar strums that mingle playfully with spare rhythms and sweet harmonies.” -- NPR

Liphemra:
"Drawing the name from the concept of “ephemera,” Marsico’s solo project is an appropriate amalgam of mysteriously ambient swirls with songs like the haunting yet pulsating 'Young.'" -- Buzzbands

TONIGHT: Future Twin In-Store @ 7PM!

Tonight we have Future Twin performing in our loft at 7PM!

Born from a cross-pollination of moped gangs (they exist!), Jean Yaste and Stephanie Rose started Future Twin in 2010 and have been on a steady rise since their Situation EP was released in 2012. Now a four-piece, Future Twin's sound somehow fits their moped genesis -- rollicking guitars and driving rhythms mix freely with girl-group vocals and pop sensibilities. It's a sound that defies easy categorization even in its straightforward parts. Perhaps, Future Twin is the dawn of a new genre: moped rock. I'm sure they'd be happy with the label.

After performing last night at the Bootleg, Future Twin will be stopping by our loft tonight at 7PM with a bunch of fresh jams to share with you. We'd love to see you here, so stop on by and get your feet moving! Check out their track "Landslide" below and we'll see you soon!

TONIGHT: OV + The Echo Present HOTT MT / Mt. Ossa @ The Echoplex!

While today may be the shortest day of the year, Origami & The Echo are teaming up to make the longest night of the year something to remember! Featuring a super-talented lineup, Origami & The Echo are proud to present the Swell Swann Solstice tonight at the Echoplex!

At the top of the bill, HOTT MT is an Origami favorite ever since we released their collaborative single with Wayne Coyne in '12. Now touring on the release of their new album I Made This, they'll be throwing down pop grooves all night long! Here's what The Echo has had to say about the group:

"International sensation HOTT MT (Hour Of The Time Majesty Twelve), is an experimental post-pop collective based in Los Angeles, CA. HOTT MT is the result of an ongoing curiosity project between Queen Ashi Dala and Spooky Tavi, which expanded to include multi-instrumentalist Bahd Bad in December of 2011, and guitarist Guitty Dryver and drummer Chairman Towel in early 2012. Thoughts and anxieties about myth, experience, conspiracy theories, and Thailand fuel the groups explorations.

HOTT MT's debut LP “I Made This” was released in May, and they recently completed work w/ The Flaming Lips on a Stone Roses cover album (release TBD). Live highlights include shows supporting Bat For Lashes, Wavves, Frightened Rabbit, Ra Ra Riot, Django Django, Robert DeLong, Hands, and The Flaming Lips, including their Guinness World Record setting event."

And here's what The Echo has to say about openers MT. OSSA:

"We make music in a way that makes us happy. We are writers, watchers, painters and listeners. We come together to bring our ideas into the light. MT. OSSA is our music and we are proud of it. People have called our music anything from surf rock and psych-pop, to dream disco and soul fuzz; we're okay with that. We're okay with presenting to the observer an opportunity to imagine and experience. Ever expanding, and limitless is who we are. Loving what we do is not hard. Color and light and shapes and terrestrial bodies are all things that inspire us, but our love for music is what drives us to be MT. OSSA."

Other openers include Fever the Ghost & J. Laser! Quite the bill isn't it? So forget the lame daylight and come party with us all night at the Echoplex! Show starts at 8:30!

1/5/14: Premiere Party BRUNCH! Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings "Give The People What The Want"

We're so excited to kick off the new year with a very special premiere party on Sunday, January 5th! For our first event of 2014, we're going to be serving you brunch while we premiere the new album from Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings!

Titled Give The People What They Want, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings' newest is born from the knowledge that only years of relentless touring and collaborating can bring to the table. Featuring the unbridled soul and punch you've come to expect ever since their emergence in 2002, Give The People What They Want promises to be an album whose funk grooves & sweet hooks will stay in your head and heart for days on end.

To make sure the new year is extra sweet, our friends and neighbors over at Taza will be providing a wonderful spread of coffee and pastries! They've been serving our favorite cuppa for about a year now and have become our go-to spot when we need a caffeine fix. We love Taza and are stoked (no, that's not the coffee speaking) to be working alongside them as we spin Sharon's newest album. It's a match made in heaven!

It gets better: Sunday's brunch will be the first time you can hear the album in its entirety, anywhere! Not only that, but we'll be the only store in LA to be premiering the record that day! We've also got a test press of the album to give away and some very limited edition 7"s for anyone who pre-orders the album - these will only be available the day of the party!

Alright, that was a lot of excitement. Take a breather and when you're ready, give a listen to lead single "Retreat!" off of Give The People What They Want below. Phew!

TONIGHT: OV + The Echo Present Vum / Neil DJ Set @ The Echo (FREE)!

Looking to liven up your Monday blues? Well, tonight at 8:30 we're partnering up with Amoeba & The Echo to present an awesome residency at The Echo with L.A locals VUM!

Here's what The Echo has to say about these new up-and-comers from Topanga Canyon:

"VUM began in 2008 as the songwriting duo Jennifer Pearl and Christopher Badger working in and out of the Secret Lodge in Topanga Canyon, CA. Partners in crime, and co-conspirators for this new throbbing noir heartbeat, the two tread a deceptively minimalist path. Their debut EP “Strange Attractor” manages to be the desert, the tropics, and “the streets” all at once. In 2011, VUM released their first full-length album, Night Sun, on Secret Lodge Recordings. Night Sun lead the listener further into the jungle-choked latitudes of distant locales and explored the dark side of psychic war, whilst becoming a favorite of the underground blogosphere and a staple on Henry Rollins KCRW radio show."

We're gonna have to agree with Henry Rollins on this one (and how can you not?) -- VUM is something worth seeing now rather than later! If you need any extra incentive, Neil will be spinning the tables beforehand, getting you nice an warmed up for what will be an awesome show! Check the full deets and give a listen to VUM track "The Incandescent Tiger" below!
