10/30: OV Presents PEACE @ The Echo!

We're excited to be co-presenting Peace at The Echo tomorrow night! Lemonade will be supporting and with the shared talent between the two of them it's definitely going to be a great time! Tickets are only $18 here at OV!

Here's what our friends at the El Rey had to say up-and-comers PEACE:

"Hailing from Birmingham, Peace are a young four-piece pointing the way for a new generation of British guitar bands. Their debut release, EP Delicious (out in USA in February), has a sense of adventure and playfulness that led it to enter the UK iTunes chart at 14, surprising everyone, especially the band. Singer Harrison said “Up until now we’ve been working a a release rate of 1.5 songs a year, so this is us basically smashing our personal best. I can’t really work out what EP ‘Delicious’ is but I think that’s the best way to feel.”

Signed to Columbia Records, Peace are an incredible live band with over 200 shows alone in 2012, playing with the likes of Mystery Jets, Manic Street Preachers and Vaccines. They’re in the studio with Jim Abbiss finishing up their debut album which will be released early 2013."

And True Panther Record's preview of Lemonade's new album Diver:

"Diver swims ecstatically in every thing from the melodies of early 90′s R&B, UK 2-step Garage, Balearic house and NY freestyle to ’80s pop-rock nostalgia, wispy new age, boy-band innocence, and synth-driven Euro-trance. The production, assisted by Fisherspooner collaborator Le Chev, is exceptionally crisp. Diver also contains some of most easily digestible music Lemonade has ever produced, yet it is anything but shallow. Callan’s lyrics now look inward, to his attempts to hold on to redemptive love and romance in a cybernetic, information-rich world."

TONIGHT: My Hawaii In-Store @ 7PM!

Tonight we have My Hawaii performing in our loft at 7PM!

While their name might lead you to think this quintet is just a front for Hawaii's tourism board, they're actually one of Los Angeles' brightest local bands, mixing 60s orchestral pop and the twee-er
(Twee-r? Tweeer?) end of folk, calling to mind Kishi Bashi's solo projects or early Boy Least Likely To. Hailing from Atwater Village, My Hawaii has been around since 2009, but claims they were having too much fun performing music to actually record any of it. Thankfully for us, they took some time to put their rhythms to tape and released Definition of Friends earlier this year. Now touring in support of that album, they will performing in our loft tonight at 7PM!

So put on your biggest smile and come on down to Origami tonight at 7PM for a night of good music! If you need practice, give a listen to their single "Fingers Numb" below! Oh and please let us know how to properly write twee-er. We're very lost on this one.

TONIGHT: Premiere Party For Midlake's 'Antiphon' @ 8pm!

Join us tonight as we premiere Midlake's new album Antiphon, which will be released on November 5th through ATO Records.

Here's what ATO had to say about the album:

"An antiphon is a call-and-response style of singing, from Gregorian chants to sea shanties. In the case of Denton, Texas’ favorite sons Midlake, it’s the perfect title for a bold response to a new phase in the band’s illustrious career, with a re-jigged line-up and a newly honed sound as rich and symphonic as it is dynamic and kaleidoscopic.

Anyone who knows Midlake’s preceding albums will recognize some constituent parts of Antiphon: the quirky psychedelia of 2004 debut Bamnan and Slivercork, the ‘70s soft-rock strains of breakthrough album The Trials Of Van Occupanther and the Brit-folk infusion of 2010’s The Courage Of Others. But their fourth album is another fascinating departure, but also a logical progression. The sound is simultaneously familiar and changed.

“It’s always through the scope of Midlake,” says vocalist/guitarist Eric Pulido, “but on Antiphon we wanted to embrace the psychedelia, style and nuance you might hear in bands from yesteryear while also being aware of music influences leading up to and present now.  The result was less folk and more rock. Less nostalgic and more progressive. Now the sky’s the limit.”"

Sounds awesome, doesn't it? To make the premiere even more special, we will be selling some rare Midlake bootlegs, handing out Midlake t-shirts and coolest of all, giving away a signed test pressing of the new record! So come on by the shop and get the chance to listen to Antiphon before anyone else! The festivities will start at 8pm and, as always, there will be free pizza and beverages provided. It's going to be a great time!

Check out the track "Provider" off of the new record and we'll see you tonight!

TONIGHT: Love Inks In-Store @ 7PM!

Tonight we have Love Inks performing in our loft at 7PM!

Branding themselves as "minimalist pop," Love Inks toes the line between chill-wave and surf-rock, sounding somewhere between Summer Camp's nostalgia overload and the poppier moments of a Those Darlins album. Featuring chiming guitars and slinky vocals from lead singer Sherry LeBlanc, their new album Generation Club is a perfect slice of indie pop that seems tailor made to hit every pleasure sensor in your brain. And since we at Origami are hedonists at heart, we're giving you the opportunity to see them perform live tonight at 7PM in our loft!

If pleasure-pop isn't enough of a description to get you down here tonight, give a listen to the lead single "Outta Sight" off their new album Generation Club below and then we'll certainly see you tonight at 7PM!

TONIGHT: William Onyeabor "Who Is William Onyeabor?" Premiere Party @ 8pm!

Hey there! Tonight at 8pm, Origami is going to be exploring a very important question: Who is William Onyeabor?

Given the album art of this latest Luaka Bop release, your first answer might be a used-car salesman or Anchorman extra. And really, you might be right, for we know almost nothing about the man behind this 3xLP compilation. What we do know is that William Onyeabor was a Nigerian funk musician operating out of Nigeria in the 1970s and 80s, releasing quite a few Nigerian hits before becoming a born again Christian and vanishing without a trace. Besides those scant details,  we also know that William Onyeabor released some of the best West African music of the 70s and his pioneering electro-funk sound inspired a wide array of musicians and DJs from David Byrne to Damon Albarn. His sound is epitomized by ear-worming synth grooves and lyrics that are often as epic in scale as they are in toe-tappingness. Needless to say, we are stoked to be hosting a premiere party of this groundbreaking compilation tonight at 7PM, a whole week before its release!

On top of giving his new compilation a spin, we will be giving away some limited edition William Onyeabor-published newspapers and other special goodies. That plus pizza and beverages means you have no reason not be here tonight! In the meantime, give a listen to one of our favorite Onyeabor tracks, "When the Going is Smooth and Good" below.

10/17: OV + The Echo Present ADULT. / Soft Metals / Flaamingos @ The Echoplex (adv tix $16 @ OV)

Join us at The Echoplex on October 17th for a night of dark wave synth sounds with ADULT., Soft Metals, Flaamingos, and DJ Michael Stock (Part Time Punks).

ADULT. //
Adam Lee Miller and Nicola Kuperus are the masterminds behind ADULT., a Detroit-based band that has been making music for well over a decade at this point—the kind of music that calls to mind the post-punk/dark wave era of the early 80s, with a signature electro-dance twist of their own. They founded their own label Ersatz Audio and Thrill Jockey. Aside from making music, they also take part in creating films, phtoographs, and paintings.

Soft Metals//
LA's Soft Metals formed in 2009 after Ian Hicks and Patricia Hall met at a DJ night and connected over their obsession with analog synthesizers and the shadowy, sultry, untamed expressions of underground electronic music. Their early collaborations paired Patricia's delicate vocals and introspective lyrics with Ian's solo sketches. Soon they moved on to writing music together, building songs from wild, improvised sessions in Ian's home studio. Their genre blurring brand of voltaic pop draws inspiration from a spectrum a sources including krautrock, synth wave, and techno.

Flaamingos//
Flaamingos are the latest signing to Felte, and their music drags the classic sounds of their favorite bands into the 21st century, in the process creating a sound that's entirely their own. In fact, it's the work of a bunch of (black-clad) Angelenos. Pounding analog drum machines. Rumbling basslines that are as moody as they are thoroughly danceable. Atmospheric washes of echo-laden synth textures. Jangling guitar sounds. And choruses that resonate with emotion. Its music runs a gamut from dancefloor-friendly synthpop, through brooding post-punk, to dark, rhythmic atmospherics.

This show will be held at the Echo, 1822 Sunset Blvd in Echo Park.
21+ / Doors @ 8:30
OV will be selling tickets for $16.
