JUST ANNOUNCED!! Youth Lagoon In-Store on 11/2

Twenty-two year old, Trevor Powers, seems to be an overnight sensation. With the release of his album "The Year of Hibernation", he has been getting a lot of hype from all the blogs around. He has even already sold out his show coming up at the Echo. This kid is going places! In fact, he dropped out of school, quit his job at Urban Outfitters, and launched his first U.S. tour. Trevor says that the record is really like his own journal for people to see inside of his head. Just a kid dealing with heartache, and the anxiety of getting older. This in-store is going to be so awesome.
"The Year of Hibernation" sounds sweet and innocent at first glance, but really has some haunting turns with dark lyrics. You can feel this kid's passion through the songs of this record. Trevor really knows how to compose some beautiful ballads. And his voice is pretty melodic. This record will chill you to your core. Make sure you come in for this in-store and buy this record. Trevor Powers is on his way to stardom.

We're not talking "your racist grandma" scary, we're talking ghost in the attic scary! Ghost stories, legends, haunted houses - you name it, we love it. So in honor of our (maybe I should speak for myself on this one..) favorite holiday, we decided to pick out our favorite spine-chilling records that we have in stock. Y'know.. to get you in the mood. We'll be posting these all week so check back. I might even post a good ghost story or two. And of course, come down to the store and buy 'em right off the wall!

REVIEW: Cerebral Ballzy - S/T

Cerebral Ballzy - S/T

I knew nothing about this band before buying the record. I loved the cover and the fake Pitchfork review that says "We hate this band." On top of all that, they have songs called, "Don't Tell Me What To Do," "Cutting Class" and Sk8 All Day." When I got the record home and put it on, my ears were bombarded by the grimiest skate punk I've heard from a new band in a while. Reminiscent of the Gorilla Biscuits (without the sing-alongs), and Teen Idles, this record is fairly perfect to shotgun beers and make bad decisions to.
I guarantee that you'll have a love/hate relationship with this band!

TONIGHT: In-Store w/ The Brook Lee Catastrophe @ 7 pm

Long Beach based band, Brook Lee Catastrophe is coming in TONIGHT to the OV loft! This band formed from two friends, Brook and Paul, collaborating on a record together. The Catastrophe was formed and has toured all around the Los Angeles venues. They have a folk, bluegrass style that takes you back to your Americana roots.

The Brook Lee Catastrophe is an American folk rock band, that incorporates textures of country, bluegrass, and gospel. The songs are made up of thick rhythms, infectious guitar hooks, and sing-a-long choruses. Make sure you come by @ 7 pm to see the Catastrophe and grab the counterpart to "American Hotel" entitled "Motel Americana."

TONIGHT: In-Store w/ Hello Electric & Steaming Satellites @ 5pm

TONIGHT! Hello Electric is coming in from Portland to share their musical styling with our OV audience. Kirk Ohnstad started Hello Electric in college producing jams entirely on hardware and an eight track digital recorder. Kirk then expanded to include members Zachary and Henry to create a multi-instrumental sound. They are known for their dynamic, dark live show, so you will regret coming in to see this live in-store!

Hello Electric's songs make us feel like we are deep in a dream. This record is characterized by dark beats, heavy synth, and charging vocals. It is a must listen, and you will wish you had been here if you miss this in-store. Beware, the video below is slightly NSFW. The band's new EP "Dead Champ" is being released on Spaceman USA and will be available for you to purchase!

This band is coming in all the way from Austria to share their tunes with us! They are on tour right now with Hello Electric. This show will be a great start to your night starting at 5 pm!!

You wanted more synth? Well Hello Electric's buddies, Steaming Satellites will provide it for you. Lots of catchy lyrics, and bouncing melodies in this release titled "The Mustache Mozart Affaire." Check out the video and song below and make sure to buy one of their rekkids when you come to the store!

Origami Vinyl Party @ CMJ TONIGHT!!!

Tonight we are throwing our first ever CMJ party with our LA friends Spaceland Productions/The Echo, Dirty Laundry, and Indigenous called Lost Angeles!

The event showcases some of the bands we are most stoked about coming out of the Left Coast at the moment. Just about everyone has been picking these bands as must-sees at CMJ this year and are excited to have them all play under one roof. If you are in town don't miss this. The line-up features:

Weekend (Slumberland) :: These guys really know how to lay on the thick swirling psych-inspired guitars and mesmerize your senses. They have just released their follow-up to the superbly excellent Slumberland release, Sports, with the EP, Red. The band just has a way with presenting sonic overload in a tasteful way that gets us Origami kids all gushy inside. The band plays at 12:15 am
Weekend - Hazel by Slumberland Records

Bleached (Art Fag/Suicide Squeeze) :: From the ashes of Mika Miko, sisters Jessica and Jennifer Clavin, further their experimentation with a perfectly crafted blend of punk, noise, pop, and surf. Bleached play at 11:30 pm.

Audacity (Burger/Volar) :: Part of the insanely amazing Long Beach music scene, Audacity bring a hefty and sweaty burst of energy. Their garage punk has been tantalizing crowds anywheres from backyard keggers to the stages of FYF Fest and of course in our loft. The perfect band to close out our show at 1am.

Guards (3 Syllables) :: Now based in Brooklyn, but originally based in LA, Guards brand of vocally ghosted out brash and beautiful indie rock is on the verge of breaking out. It's the kinda stuff we wanna listen to with a bottle of Jameson in one hand and our dancing partner in the other. Guards play at 10:45 pm.

Fidlar (White Iris) :: These guys are our favorite skate punk band right now. They just slay. Their live energy just makes you want to run around like crazy with beer flying in the air and soaking the entire crowd (well in our head anyway). Fidlar plays at 10:00 pm

Races (French Kiss/Jaxart) :: We've been rocking their 7" out on Jaxart a lot this year and are eagerly anticipating hearing a full length's worth of songs from these guys. They have a large and brooding sound with layered strings and synths that seem to perch the vocals in the heavens above. Races play at 9:15 pm

Tropical Popsicle (Volar) :: Don't take their name too literally. This band is full of dark haunting synths and soundscapes and 60's art-rock vocals. It's the best of what we like to call June Gloom. The band barely has a 7" out and is already touring with Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Crystal Antlers, Iceage, and Times New Viking. Get there early because you'll be bummed if you miss it. Tropical Popsicle play at 8:30 pm

This all goes down at The Cake Shop in the Lower East Side. Their address is 152 Ludlow St. The event is free to CMJ badgeholders or costs ya $10 for those without badges. 21 and over. Free Moonshine Cider Cocktails from 8pm - 9pm!!

Sean is out there and will be giving away free High Fives all night.

TONIGHT!! Wreck of the Zephyr and The Fling In-Store!!

Here are 5 facts about Wreck of the Zephyr:

1. They've fallen victim of frog kidnapping.
2. Hot dogs were once a large part of their lives.
3. Between the 3 of them, they own 87 Dinosaur Jr. albums.
4. At least one of them will do almost anything for an ice cream sundae.
5. Not one of them can resist dancing to The Modern Lovers. (But really, who can?)

Wreck Of The Zephyr - Triangle Fire _ Live at the HobbyShop from Hobby Shop on Vimeo.

Oh.. right.. the music.. Inspired by east coast punk, Wreck of the Zephyr also channels any number of SST bands from the Minutemen to the Meat Puppets to Husker Du. Chaotic but folky, these dudes don't give your ear drums a break. From the break neck pace of Dave's drumming, to Wolf's intricate guitar playing, anchored by Eric's pounding bass, these dudes will certainly wet your whistle. They'll also bring their new limited edition album, For Helen. The record covers are handmade books! Can you believe it??

Next up is the Fling! Drawing inspiration"from an eclectic mix of folk, rock, pop and psychedelic music", this band is sure to knock your socks off. They're celebrating the upcoming release of their EP, What I've Seen so stick around for some nostalgia and great indie rock tunes.
It all starts at 7 pm so eat your dinner, put on your jacket and come out for a night of of wonderful music and wonderful gentlemen.

TONIGHT: In-Store w/ Lakookala @ 7pm

TONIGHT local Los Angeles songwriter, Nicole Ranalli, will be coming in to the loft to perform under the moniker Lakookala! Starting off as the leading lady in the punk band, Medic Medic, she was inspired from some early recordings she had done solo and decided to venture out on her own. She bought a used drum set to accompany her vocals, which have been compared to PJ Harvey and Corin Tucker, and turned into Lakookala!

The songs from her new release "Songs for Zemean" feature heavy drums, and slightly eerie vocals. Lakookala's style really reminds us of Alison Mosshart from The Kills. With distorted sounds, and aggressive lyrics this record is following along in a girl singer punk vibe that really works. Make sure you come into the loft to see this performance in promotion of the new pink vinyl, and buy the record while you are at it!

TONIGHT: In-Store w/ Street Chant @ 7pm

Coming to us all the way from New Zealand, Street Chant (formerly Mean Street) is making their way to the OV loft! These guys have had a lot of press in the past surrounding their tour a year back. CMJ named them as a must see band, and Brooklyn Vegan called them "darlings of the night." They are coming back in town to perform in our loft space and dazzle us with their distorted garage sounds.

These guys make us reminiscent of our fond memories of childhood. The days when we hung out in our friends garages, drank beverages that we weren't supposed to, and inhaled a little too much for our own good. Their album "Means" released earlier this year is characterized by heavy guitar riffs, and angsty lyrics that give a punk, garage feel that is hard not to love. Come in and see this band in action TONIGHT and pick up their record!
