LITTLE DRAGON "Ritual Union" RELEASE PARTY on The Echo Back Patio TONIGHT!!!!

Tonight, after you witness the sure to be epic in-store by SLUTEVER & CRYSTAL ANTLERS (which all begins at 6pm), we will premiere the new Little Dragon LP "Ritual Union"! At 10pm we will drop the needle and play this baby in it's entirety and you will have an opportunity to purchase the LP early from us! Be sure to get to The Echo early as it has been filling to capacity by 10pm each week!

Here's what NPR had to say about the album:
I love watching a band evolve. On its third studio album, Little Dragon does just that. The Swedish group, fronted by singer Yukimi Nagano, first hooked me years ago with its gorgeous mix of soul, R&B, rock, funk, synth-pop and electronica. But when I heard "Nightlight," the first single from Ritual Union, I immediately knew something different was afoot.

The new record brings out a sharper side of the band. The sounds feel more aggressive, the vocals more dynamic and the mood more consistent as one track flows into the next. At the same time, though, Little Dragon hasn't lost the dreamy pop sensibility that has always made its songs so addictive.

The dance floor is my first love as a music fan, and Ritual Union — out July 26 — has plenty to offer in that department. Uptempo rhythms and electronic beats are everywhere here, making for an interesting contrast with Nagano's vocals, which often dip into a quirky and even folky vibe. The tension resolves in the closing cut, "Seconds," a gentle lullaby with a hint of Kraftwerk that marries Little Dragon's disparate influences perfectly.

INSTORE: SUEDEHEAD tonight at 7pm

Here's a couple of things you may not know about Suedehead. (as asked by Generation Of Scars)

1) First of all, can you tell us what's the story of the band?
The band is kind of made up of an all-star line up. We all come from different bands of all sorts of music. Members are: singer/ song writer/ guitar- Davey Warsop (Beat Union), keys/ organ- Greg Kuehn (TSOL, Berlin), drums- Korey Kingston (The Aggrolites, Hepcat, See Spot), guitar Chris "the general" Bradley (The Distraction), Nic Rodriguez (Fallborn). The majority of us are from southern California, with the exception of Davey, who now lives in So Cal, but is originally from Birmingham England. We have been together now for almost a year (give or take).

2)By the way, why did you call yourselves Suedehead ? In others terms is that a tribute to Morrissey or clearly a post skinhead reference ?
We call ourselves Suedehead because that is the name of our band. There is no other reference but that for us.

3) You're first EP In Motion is fueled up with pop and soul energy that reminds us a lot of English bands of the 80's like The Jam or The Redskins...what are your biggest musical influences ?
Our biggest influences are Motown, northern soul, the jam, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson just to name a few. We also have our own personal influences too as individual musicians. You can see by the bands we all come from and have played with, there are very diverse tastes and styles from the players in the band. But that is what makes us have our sound. We all grew up listening to this kind of music. we all love "feel good" music. So we are just playing what we know and love.

THE FORMS instore tonight at 7pm!!

After two fantastic releases, both helmed by Steve Albini, The Forms are back with a reformation of their previous works entitled 'Derealization' (out now on Threespheres. Not so much a remix album as it is a re-imagining...

Stereogum has this to say:
"The Forms, now the duo of vocalist/keyboardist Alex Tween and multi-instrumentalist Matt Walsh, are releasing a new “remix” EP, Derealization, in February. The six-song collection features instrumentally reworked versions of older material and a number of guests: The National’s Matt Berninger, Shudder To Think’s Craig Wedren, Nat Baldwin of Dirty Projectors, St. Vincent player Daniel Hart, and Andrew Thiboldeaux of Pattern is Movement. As Matt Walsh, who also produced, explains, it started as an accident:

We had just received the vinyl of our last record. I was so excited that I dropped the needle down without checking the speed on the turntable, which was set to 45 instead of 33. Immediately, we were blown away at how the songs took on a whole new character at that speed. We spent that afternoon listening to the record at different speeds and made the decision on the spot to do a ‘remix album.’

Instead of just remixing, they end up rewriting, expanding/contracting, and creating hybrids of old and new material, etc. You’ll recognize echoed melodies and lyrics from the two previous records, Icarus and The Forms. You won’t recognize other details. The transformations took place in Walsh’s studio in Ridgewood with the help of producer Scott Solter (Superchunk, St. Vincent). The results? Sparkly, densely packed, airy dance music by guys who like their post-punk darker."

THE FORMS play at 7pm in our loft

THE CTHULHUS in-store tonight at 7pm

The Cthulhus are getting sinister up in the loft with songs from their new LP EVAPR8.

Here's what LA Record has to say about it: "This collection of sci-fi sound poems, strung together with bedroom rock, bent electronics and musique concrète, sounds less like Wavves and more like Trout Mask Replica or early Zappa, with perhaps an assist from Bruce Haack on drum machines, which could easily be lifted from a Baldwin ’70s home organ."

Sink into the dark tonight at 7pm.

Pacific Pride + Goochi Boiz Live in the Loft TONIGHT @ 7pm

We're pumped to get the sounds of Pacific Pride and Goochi Boiz in the shop tonight. Both bands have been raging across the west coast and getting crowds pumped on their noisy 90's inspired indie rock.

Here's what Seattle Weekly had to say about Pacific Pride:
“Denver indie combo Pacific Pride have a deep and wide river of influences that’s fed by everyone from Pavement to Pollard… OK, maybe that river’s not all that deep after all. Nonetheless, the vocals of Paul Garcia do a lot to separate the band’s sound from that of other noise-pop outfits; his lolling, dry singing style is half disinterested observer, half emotional wreck. Combined with the band’s tendency to write songs that refract its more obvious American tastes through a prism of odd-pop icons like the Kinks and the Clean, the result is a sound that channels the clattering, energetic velocity of classic indie rock with a touch of cerebral catchiness that warrants more than a second glance”

CORREATOWN live in our loft tonight!

After a bit of time to pursue other projects (Les Shelleys) Angela Correa + band are finally back with a new EP 'Etch The Line', a prelude to her second album 'Pleiades' (due out in September). The latest EP finds the band toeing the line between their folk tendencies and more swirlier territory.

"The slow hazey daydream that is Correatown materialized a real life EP yesterday. Etch The Line is a beautifully produced 6 track EP that’s full of layered guitars, washy reverb, beautiful harmonies and an occasional fuzzed out synth. This is a prelude to their second full-length “Pleaides” due out in September." (The New Lo Fi)

You can catch the full band live tonight in our loft at 7pm doing what they do best...blowing your mind!!

Support Origami Vinyl's TEAM THAI DAI & 826LA

Last week in our newsletter we mentioned a little bit about the Ping Pong fundraiser, Everything You Know Is Pong for local non-profit 826LA. If you aren't familiar, 826 is a stellar national program devoted to providing after-school tutoring and creative writing workshops for children. Our local outpost, 826LA is located here in Echo Park and is also known as the Echo Park Time Travel Mart. We have done a few different programs with our buddies over there, most notably the "Chickens In Love" project where we released a vinly/digital compilation of amazing LA based musicians covering songs the children of 826LA had written.

Every year 826LA hosts a fundraiser to help keep their services to our local community running. With the insane budget cuts that have happened in California and the Los Angeles School District, our kids are facing extremely tough times when it comes to education. (It's kinda even hard to believe I had to just type that, why in the hell would we EVER cut education budgets is beyond insanity). Since these budgets have been cut, things like arts, entertainment, and extra-curricular activities have been whittled down to non-existence. This is why 826LA is so important to me and should be to you. Not only do kids get to build on their education through these workshops, but they are given skills that will not only give them an advantage in school, but will also help them excel in life outside of school.

This year's annual fundraiser is being held next Tuesday at the Echoplex and will feature celebrity guests Spike Jonze and Miranda July. There will be a whole ping pong tourney happening and the winning teams get to take on the celebs. Origami Vinyl has formed our own team (Team Thai Dai) in hopes of putting a wicked curve serve on Miranda. But in order to give us a shot to compete we need your help in supporting our team by donating a small amount ($1, $5, $1,000,000.00) via our team page link below. You can also contribute by buying a ticket to the event and watching us in action. All the donation details are below. Please help us help 826LA, I cannot stress how important their program is and how much it helps the children in our 'hood.

Gardens & Villa In-Store Performance TONIGHT @ 7pm!!!

In the year of the saxophone, Santa Barbara's Gardens & Villa give us the flute. And along the way, G&V effectively wipe clear the vaseline from the murky bedroom funk of recent days. G&V bang out instant classics -- each crystal clear and immaculate, but no less sweeping or languid. Their debut is a youthful exploration of just how opulent and pop starkness can go. It also leaves an impression of California in the way that Richard Diebenkorn's Ocean Park series or the pool party scene from The Graduate both do, always sensed more than stated outright.

Gardens & Villa channel all the taut pop precisions of 90s Britpop of bands like Blur (borrowed from the 60s anyhow), and send it through an 80s synth filter both undeniably coastal and modern. It's Spoon's Kill The Moonlight lost in a daydream, but with that same hungry energy. Gardens & Villa may simultaneously pull from Gary Numan, The Kinks and odder prog within one composition. And like a fine sweet tea, it's made just that right kind of sugary -- though even the most upbeat tunes have an undercurrent of the bittersweet and the lost at heart
.
In 2010, Gardens & Villa traveled to Oregon to record their debut with visionary, vibemaster and labelmate Richard Swift. Together, they put some sand in the sheets of new wave ("Black Hills") and pop some translucent funk ("Orange Blossom"). There's also a level of effortless class maintained across the whole set. Each and every lush little gem explores the wonderful mystery between intuition and proficiency, between tension and repose.

Gardens & Villa are Chris Lynch, Adam Rasmussen, Levi Hayden, Shane McKillop and Dusty Ineman.

Be sure to come check em out here for FREE tonight in our loft at 7pm and pick up their new LP out on Secretly Canadian!

TONIGHT IN THE LOFT: HIDEOUS MEN + MMCIII at 6PM

Hideous Men consists of Ryan McRyhew and Kristi Schaefer. With Ryan’s background in analog synths and love of rap and experimental noise, (and his previous involvement in electronic-noise group, BDRMPPL) paired with Kristi’s appreciation of riot grrl, hardcore punk and pop, Hideous Men make self-proclaimed “dance music for weirdos.” Inspired by their peers in Denver, CO Ryan and Kristi began making music as Hideous Men in August, 2009. Their influences can be heard in their bass-heavy beats, samples from rap songs, strong synth leads, and melodic yet confrontational vocals. Critics have noticed an element of madness in their music and Hideous Men have been described as, “manic and rough-edged but has a human voice at its centre” (Dazed and Confused)

Not much is know about Milton Melvin Croissant III. Are you brave enough to open yourself up to what might be behind that door?
