ORIGAMI SUMMER SALE: Aug 2, 3, and 4th!!!

Crate diggers, Vinyl enthusiasts, DJs, and wax fanatics!!

This may be our largest sale YET! And it will ONLY take place THIS WEEKEND!!
We recently bought thousands of records from a former 80's radio DJ and came across awesome early 80's hip-hop, new wave, post-punk, reggae/dub, freestyle, miami bass, early house & techno, and just about everything else in that era you can think of. Most of these are sealed or never played!!! We're gonna unleash them all to you and most of them at a $1 each!!!
In addition to that our shop is packed to the gills with all sorts of great new releases and we need to make room for even more great stuff coming out over the next two months. In order to do that we're also giving everyone 10% off the entire shop! (Plus we don't want to have to carry all this vinyl to FYF Fest, so we'd really appreciate all the help in slimming our bins down)

And FINALLY, we've marked down a couple hundred records in our shop to clearance status.  These records are marked down anywhere from 20-50% off.

This sale will ONLY happen this weekend, so DON'T MISS OUT!

UPDATE: CANCELLED!!! Places We Slept In-Store @ 7PM!

It's been a whirlwind of a month here at OV, but we're ending strong with Places We Slept in-store tonight at 7pm!

This three man band from Omaha sits somewhere between hard punk and indie pop; up-beat and gritty. Their recently released album peeled. ventures between these two categories, using the lighter sounds to convey harder, sometimes rebellious lyrics. One such song, "Sewage Bay Atlantic," is about disappointment and its humor.

“We parked in this Walgreens parking lot and we walk a mile or so. She (a booking agent) just presents this big hole of water as the Atlantic Ocean and is like, ‘Here you go!’” Said Places We Slept bassist J.D. Brokenrope. Thus, "Sewage Bay Atlantic" and its music video were born from the humor and disappointment of that moment.

Check out the video, and come out to see the band tonight in our loft at 7pm!

We Need You! ADAPTER PRIZE Nominations Due In-Store 7/31

Remember those awesome people who bring you Record Store Day each year? Well, they're back again, and they need your help. They've just announced a new set of awards which honors the releases record store staff  - us! - and their customers - you! - think are the very best: the ADAPTER PRIZE.

Carrie Colliton, Record Store Day co-organizer enthuses, “I have never been so happily immersed in new music, of all genres, as when I worked within the walls of a record store every day. The folks who work there and the folks who shop there know their stuff (and I’ve found many of them are not shy about expressing their opinions, either!). I think it’s great that there’s finally a way for them to collectively give a slap on the back to the artists and labels who create the records that they love each year.”

The nomination process is going on now until July 31st at OV, and you can help by either coming into the store, e-mailing us (highfive@origamiorigami.com), or tweeting at us (@origamivinyl using #ADAPTERPRIZE) to nominate titles in these four categories:
1. RECORD OF THE YEAR (NEW RELEASE)
2. RECORD OF THE YEAR (REISSUE)
3. RECORD STORE DAY RELEASE OF THE YEAR
4. BREAKOUT OF THE YEAR

To be eligible for nomination for the 2013 Record Store Day Adapter Prize, titles must have been released between May 1 2012 and April 30, 2013, and titles must have general national distribution and be available to all stores across the country.  Full criteria  for each category and a growing list of stores accepting nominations is available on their website.

Once the nominating time period has closed, nominations will be tallied and the top five nominations meeting the criteria in each category will be placed on a short list. We'll keep ya'll posted as soon as the five nominations per category are announced. The recipients of the first-ever Record Store Day Adapter Prize will be announced in September 2013.

Every entry matters, so come out to OV, email us, or tweet at us using #ADAPTERPRIZE to nominate the artists and labels you feel are worthy of the Adapter Prize.

TONIGHT: Speedy Ortiz In-Store @ 7PM!

Hey, folks! We've got Speedy Ortiz in our loft to rock tonight at 7pm!

This four-piece self-proclaimed "snack rock" band follows in the abrasive independent rock n' roll tradition, heavily influenced by the 90s music scene. Frontwoman and songwriter Dupis weaves together emotional, empowering, and wry narratives, which make up the essence of Speedy Ortiz. The band recently released their debut LP Major Arcana on Carpark, which was rated Best New Music by PitchFork with them saying, "Even at its most distortion-caked, there’s a melodic confidence and a gimlet-eyed clarity about Major Arcana that’s a rare find in a debut."

Come out to OV tonight, and check 'em out! In the mean time, here's the music video for their single "Ka-Prow!"We'll see you here tonight!

7/27: OV Presents the Cerny Brothers & Miracle Parade at EAT | SEE | HEAR's screening of Almost Famous!

July might be nearing its end, but we still have more for ya'll - like a double musical feature at this week's EAT| SEE | HEAR. While Speedy Ortiz performs in store, OV will present the Cerny Brothers and Miracle Parade at tomorrow's EAT | SEE | HEAR.

The Cerny Brothers started as just that - brothers Robert Cerny and Scott Cerny. The duo have been making music together, since they could remember. They officially formed their own band and began performing in 2010, before adding additional Cody Fontes (drummer) and Gabe Davis (bassist) to their musical family in 2012. They've recently released their sophomore album The Cerny Brothers in May and will blow you away tomorrow with their americana folk.

Miracle Parade began as a studio experiment by Christopher Pappas (The Everyday Visuals’ front man) in 2010, before evolving into a full-fledged alter ego. He released his debut album, “Hark!…And Other Lost Transmissions” on June 21st, and he'll be bringing his multi-facetted talent to the stage of EAT | SEE | HEAR tomorrow!

This week's Eat|See|Hear will take place at Los Angeles Tech College at 400 West Washington Blvd. Check the event page for parking instructions. The food trucks for this week will be: Gravy Train, Vizzi Truck, Coolhaus, Brasil Kiss, and Crepe de Ville.

Per usual, doors open at 5:30pm, the bands play at 7:00pm, and the movie starts at 8:30pm. For more info and tickets go HERE. We've got both bands queued up for your listening pleasure, so enjoy and head out to the event tomorrow.

TONIGHT: George Glass In-Store @ 7PM!

We have George Glass in store to rock the loft tonight at 7pm!

This three-piece rock band met in a drab, beer-soaked LA bar in autumn of 2009. Three weeks later, Nicholas Ceglio (singer/guitarist),  Peter DiBiasio (bassist), and Nathan Kondor (drummer) began playing gigs in Silverlake and Echo Park venues. They released their EP Sunshine in 2011, and their sound is an honest, introspective rock n' roll, influenced by the like of the Kinks, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Elliott Smith.

Here's their addictive song "AM Radio." Check it out, and come on down to OV tonight to see 'em live in our loft at 7pm!

TONIGHT: Only God Forgives, Director & Composer In-Store Signing

This is a really big deal, folks. We're lucky enough to have the director & writer, Nicolas Winding Refn, and composer, Cliff Martinez, of the new crime thriller movie Only God Forgives in to hang out and sign the movie's limited edition double colored 180g soundtrack LP tonight from 7-8pm.

You may recognize the two from their work as director and composer - respectively - of the freakin' awesome and critically acclaimed Drive. Well, they're back with Only God Forgives, featuring Ryan Gosling (yep, in all his glory) as Julian, a drug-smuggler thriving in Bangkok's criminal underworld who is compelled by his mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) to avenge the death of his younger brother. Refn says that while Drive is like "doing cocaine all night," Only God Forgives is more like "an old school acid trip." Not to mention, OGF was the hot and controversial ticket at the Cannes Film Festival. Consider us seduced.

So, check out Only God Forgives in theaters Friday, July 19th. Then, come into OV to get your copy of the limited edition soundtrack LP signed by the director and composer tonight from 7-8pm! There'll be a limited quantity of those LPs available in-store with a sweet 12"x18" poster included with purchase, so get here early and snag 'em for yourself. We'll see you here!

Spaceships In-Store Tonight @ 7PM!

Spaceships are making another galactic stopover at our loft tonight at 7pm, and it sure as hell won't suck poop.

Jessie Waite and Kevin LaRose began their journey after being kicked out of their college dorm freshman year. After some nomadic travels, they landed in Echo Park to pick up their instruments and start a band. They released their debut self-titled EP in 2012, a self-titled 7" later that same year, and - about 4 days ago - their first LP Cool Breeze Over the Mountains. Their distored-lo-fi-pop-garage-punk-and-the-kitchen-sink sound is freakin' sick, receiving accolades from the likes of LA BuzzBands, Spin, Amoeba, and here at OV as well.

Don't believe us? Well, check out their wacky music video for "Ghost" off Cool Breeze Over the Mountains, and get down to OV tonight at 7pm to experience them yourself!

The band finally gets their due at The Echo with their monthlong Monday night rezzie at The Echo. Neil's been speaking to the band and they are making crazy props and ensuring each Monday night will be a different showcase of the bizarre and odd. If you want to get weird, then Monday nights should be spent with HOTT MT for the next month. You'll walk away a little different then walked in that's for sure.

Majical Cloudz In-Store Tonight @ 7PM!!

Tonight, we are lucky enough to have the hypnotic Majical Cloudz in store to captivate us with his soulful meta-pop at 7PM in our loft!

Majical Cloudz began as a solo project by Devon Welsh in 2010, before Matthew Otto joined as a collaborator in 2012. Majical Cloudz has been busy since, releasing Turns Turns Turns EP in 2012 and Impersonator in 2013. Pitch Fork described Impersonator as "a gorgeous record-- extraordinarily sung, hypnotically focused-- but it is Welsh's sense of emotional urgency that makes it special." They're right. It's a truly beautiful, hypnotic listening experience.

We have the artistic music video for "Bugs Don't Buzz" off Impersonator queued up for your viewing pleasure. Get entranced by the overwhelming beauty, and come out to watch Majical Cloudz perform live tonight at 7pm!

The internationally renowned gypsy-punk-rock band is back with their sixth full length album Pura Vida Conspiracy, and we could not be more excited! From their two released songs from the album -"Malandrino" and "Lost Innocent World" - it sounds like we're in for a freakin' awesome ride of that gyp-rock we love so much; seriously, this stuff is addictively catchy.

TONIGHT: Kera & The Lesbians In-Store @ 7PM

Come out to OV at 7pm to enjoy the "bipolar folk" - as they describe themselves - that is Kera and the Lesbians!

All the way from sunny San Diego, this five-piece band of folksy fury creates pretty freakin' awesome tunes. Their music is a beautifully messy amalgamation of gypsy-folk and garage, utilizing lyrics encompassing friendship, insanity, ill-fated love, and - in their newest single "NAILBITER" - anxiety. "NAILBITER" is a manic expression of their bipolar folk, inspired by the lost and devastated souls wandering around the LA streets. I'm addicted to it, especially that powerfully lonesome trumpet. It gives me goosebumps in all the right ways.

Check out the artistic music video for "NAILBITER" all ready for your viewing pleasure. Get seduced by their sound, and come down to OV tonight at 7pm to catch 'em live!

Friday, July 19, 2013

7/20: OV Presents VUM at EAT | SEE | HEAR's screening of Coming To America!

What? Another double feature, you say? Heck yeah! While Kera And The Lesbians perform in store, OV will present VUM at tomorrow's EAT | SEE | HEAR.

LA's very own, VUM began in 2008 with the songwriting collaboration of Jennifer Pearl and Christopher Badger after working in and out of the Secret Lodge in Topanga Canyon, CA together. The two released their debut EP Strange Attractor in 2010 and their first full-length album Night Sun in 2011 on Secret Lodge Recordings, before adding drummer Scott Spaulding to the band. Now, this dark, goth-noise trio is "totally ruling L.A. noir" according to Aaron Aldorisio of Amoeba Music, and, lucky for us, their second album will be coming this summer. Get a taste of their haunting, pop-noir jams and what is to come from their upcoming album tomorrow night!

This week's Eat|See|Hear will take place at Santa Monica High School at 601 Pico Blvd, Santa Monica, CA, 90405. Check the event page for parking instructions. The fantastically fresh food trucks for this week will be: Buttermilk Truck, MacOlicious, Ludo Bites, Coolhaus, Brasil Kiss, and Dessert Truck TBD.

Per usual, doors open at 5:30pm, VUM plays at 7:00pm, and the movie starts at 8:30pm. For more info and tickets go HERE. Here's their new single "Solid Waves" for your listening pleasure. See you tomorrow!

The Burning of Rome In-Store Tonight @ 7pm!

The Burning of Rome is back again to burn down our loft with their unique gypsy-dance rock today at 3pm!

The Burning of Rome has received crazy accolades after the release of their album With Us in 2012. 944 Magazine said their sound "stretch(es) far beyond the threshold of modern rock. The Burning of Rome is a post-apocolypitic mash-up of meticulous orchestration, electronic manipulation and eccentric experimentation." We couldn't agree more.

For now, listen to their song "Ballad of An Onion Sprout off of With Us, and we'll see you this afternoon at 3pm!

7/21: Gogol Bordello "Pura Vida Conspiracy" Premiere Party @ 8pm

We're stoked to be hosting a premiere party for Gogol Bordello's new record 'Pura Vida Conspiracy'! Come down to the shop Sunday night (7/21) at 8:00 p.m. for free pizza and drinks. You will also be able to pre order the album and get some goodies included with purchase! (Details on those goodies are still TBA).

Here's what AltSounds.com had to say about 'Pura Vida Conspiracy':

"With their fifth EP, the eight-piece Ukraine/Manhattan bred rockers have kept their raucous politico-punk sound as fresh as ever. Gypsy punk may sound like a niche, but in reality Gogol Bordello's sound owes much more to Eastern European folk. The appeal of Gogol is their ability to take the folk style of their fore fathers and inject it with a vitality and urgency that goes way beyond giving it 'a modern twist'. Their story-weaving abilities sound all the more authentic delivered in lead singer Eugene Hutz's thundering baritone. Recalling The Clash at their most outrageous, Flogging Molly at their most anthemic and Madness at, well, their maddest, Gogol Bordello have a knack for making their intricate style seem effortless, and above all, ridiculously fun. I mean, just look at tracks like Lost Innocent World, instantly catchy but more impressive with each listen."

Sounds awesome, right!? It's going to be rad. Hope to see you on Sunday!

We have more of LA's finest for you, sweet Angelenos. OV will present Branches at this week's edition of EAT | SEE | HEAR.

Branches started as a collaboration of best friends that's now evolved into a full-fledged band. After having three EPs - Merry ChristmasO, Light! and Cabin -   under their belt, they released their debut album Thou Art The Dream in 2012.  Thou Art The Dream explored the ideas of faith, loneliness, love, and hope with their indie-folk sound that's comparable to The Head & The Heart and Freelance Whales. Lucky for us, they'll be taking that family-folk style to the stage of this week's Eat|See|Hear.

This will be his third solo album, and Mayer Hawthorne is excited to take what people describe as his "retro soul" sound to not just reminisce on the "good old days" but to create "new good days." His new single off the album, "Her Favorite Song," is a nice fusion of funk with pop; not to mention, the video has a bounty of beautiful ladies and adorable dogs - who, undoubtedly, are meant to represent the hound-ish behavior of men at the club. He got all symbolic on us.

Take a look and listen at the video, and come out tonight at 8pm for some sweet tunes, delicious pizza, quenching beverages, and other goodies!

OV Presents HOTT MT's July Monday Rezzie @ The Echo!

Last year we put out the incredibly awesome collab 7" from HOTT MT and Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips. Since then the band has released their new EP on Manimal Records, worked on a Stone Roses cover album with The Flaming Lips, and have played numerous shows across the universe including opening for the Lips on their World Record breaking most shows in 24 hours spanning different cities.

Quiet Company In-Store Tonight @ 7PM!!!

We are lucky enough to have indie rockers Quiet Company in-store tonight at 7pm to impress us with their indie-rock-power pop! (Sounds like an interesting combination, right? Well, they freakin' own it.)

Formed in 2005 by frontman/multi-instrumentalist Taylor Muse, Quiet Company released their first album Shine Honesty to mad praise. The five-piece band comprised of Muse, Thomas Blank (multi-instrumentalist), Matt Parmenter (bass/vocals/piano), Jef Weathers (drums), and Cody Ackors (trombone) have been busy releasin' albums and EPs ever since.

Their sound, lyrics, and ideologies have evolved over time and the long laundry list of music they've produced: their second album Everyone You Love Will Be Happy Soon in 2009, Songs For Staying In EP in 2010, their third album We Are All Where We Belong in 2011, their Christmas EP Winter Is Coming - GoT fans should be chuckling -, and a re-release, A Dead Man On My Back: Shine Honesty Revisited. Their sound is dance-rock with brass that transcends it to a whole new level.

Listen to their hit "You, Me & The Boatman" - which you may recognize from the PGA Tour ad campaign. And, come check 'em out live in our loft tonight at 7pm!

TONIGHT: Slow Mover In-Store @ 7PM!

I hope ya'll had a sweet time celebrating 'murica yesterday. Why not continue that celebration and come into OV tonight for some freakin' sick rock n' roll with Slow Mover at 7pm?!

This four-piece stoner-rock band came together in 2011 and released their self-titled album soon after. If you're looking for a description of their sound, a crudely concise one can be found on their Bandcamp: "it's like These Arms Are Snakes got drunk and f*cked Isis circa Oceanic album and the resulting baby was birthed to Led Zeppelin covers done by Cave In/Old Man Gloom." Heh, I'm not quite sure if it's a listener's description or of their own invention; either way, it's hilariously on-point.

So, what're ya waitin' for?! Come down to OV tonight at 7pm and work off that post-'murica-day hangover with Slow Mover! For now, enjoy "Jefferson Combine" off their self-titled album.
