TONIGHT: Moon Honey In-Store @ 7PM!

Tonight we have Moon Honey performing in our loft at 7PM!

We love it when something different comes through our shop. And despite the somewhat traditional pieces of Moon Honey, their sound is definitely not. Melding psychedelic hooks, prog-rock progressions and lead singer Jessica Ramsey's unique voice, Moon Honey sounds like Joanna Newsom fronting the proggier elements of The Crane Wife, with unique instrumentation and compositional left-turns at ever corner. It's enchanting and challenging stuff. Their newest self-released album, Hand Painted Dream Photographs, looks to push the boundaries of the music further, taking inspiration from the dream worlds of Dali, Kahlo, and more. We're excited to see the results and hope you can join us tonight at 7PM for a glimpse into Moon Honey's intoxicating musical world.

To get you prepared, give a listen to Hand Painted Dream Photographs' single "Self-Portrait Beneath Woman's Mask" below and we'll see you tonight at 7!

TONIGHT: Kan Wakan In-Store @ 7PM!

Tonight we have Kan Wakan performing in our loft at 7PM! This Los Angeles group got together in Silverlake in 2012 as they collectively wanted "to fuse classical minimalism and experimental soul within a more accessible sonic environment." Needless to say, their efforts have become a success and their new EP, Forever Found  has gotten nothing but positive reviews. Now they're busy getting ready to release their debut album, but were nice enough to stop by to share  their mesmerizing music with us. So come hang out by tonight for a night of hypnotizing and captivating, post-rock and orchestral-music!

If you want a quick (well, not very quick) preview of their sound, give a listen to Forever Found single "Midnight Moon" below. See you tonight!

You ever hear of a guy called Nick Cave and his band the Bad Seeds?! Yeah, thought so! I'm sure by now you've heard they're playing at the Shrine Auditorium on July 11th. What's that you say? You'd love to go? Would you also love to sit in the front row?!?! Because holy shit! We've got a pair of front row tickets to give away to a lucky winner! To coincide with the release of their Live From KCRW LP on RSD, we're raffling off these amazing tickets.

You can up your chances of winning by buying some records. (That's what you were coming in for anyway, right?) With every $20 you spend at OV, you get an extra raffle ticket. And more good news! If you don't win the front row tickets, we also have 2 pairs of 'normal' tickets to give away as runner up prizes. If you don't want to leave anything up to chance, starting Friday, we'll have tickets for sale for the show as well. We'll be announcing the winner at Record Club on 12/10. So if you're the type of person that likes receiving a certificate in front of a lot of people, you should definitely join us! I (Phew! TONIGHT: Week of Wonders In-Store Tonight @ 7pm!

Get ready to dance tonight at the Week of Wonders in-store!

Described as "tropical punk", Week of Wonders craft catchy songs that will be sure to get you moving your feet. The melodies are colorful, made complete by glittery guitars and conga line beats. You'd never guess that these guys are from Seattle, a place notorious gloom. Week of Wonders are the equivalent to a plethora of sunshine and warmth that you can access even on the dreariest of days.

Check out the video for "Wishes" below (off of their Failure EP) and we'll see you at 7pm!

TONIGHT: OV + Dirty Laundry Present Mike Watt and the Missingmen

Thought you'd have a quiet Friday tonight? Maybe go to bed early, get some rest? Well you're wrong because OV + Dirty Laundry are presenting another kickass show at Casey's Irish Pub in DTLA tonight! This week's edition of Filthy Fridays is headlined by the legendary Mike Watt & his Missingmen!

Co-founder and bassist of punk godfathers Minutemen and fIREHOSE, Mike Watt's music has been a huge influence on thousands of bands and listeners. But just like those bands, Mike has never been satisfied sitting still and so he's been touring relentlessly with his new group The Missingmen, bringing his punk music vision to smaller bars and clubs across the U.S. His most recent album, Hyphenated Man, is evidence of this constant movement, flying between trad-punk and more experimental punk sounds with ease. We've always been huge fans of his work and we jumped at the opportunity to co-present his music at such an intimate venue.

What's even better is OV faves Gothic Tropic and Avi Buffalo will be opening! Sounds like you're gonna need to get out of bed and get to Casey's right at 9PM! Cant get your lazy bum up? Give a listen to Minutemen classic "This Ain't No Picnic" below and we'll see you tonight!

Thursday, November 21, 2013

TONIGHT: OV + The Echo Present Obits / Rob Crow @ The Echo!

We're excited to be co-presenting The Obits at The Echo tonight! Rob Crow of Pinback will be supporting and between the Obits hard-hitting garage rock and Rob Crow's melodic guitar lines, it's sure to be a rowdy time! Tickets are only $14 here at OV!

The Obits are a supergroup of sorts, formed from members of the Hot Snakes, Edsel, Drive Like Jehu, Girls Against Boys and Pitchfork. Quite a list isn't it? Here's what Sub Pop had to say about Bed & Bugs, the newest album of this uber-talented foursome:

"Thank you for what we are presuming to be your interest in the band Obits. They are a four-piece band who currently live in Brooklyn, NY, and whose music is most probably considered an occupant of the rock music genre, with more specific reconnaissance in the areas of garage, punk, surf, surf-punk, and garage-punk (though, not surf-garage).

Critical response to previous Obits albums has included such adjectives as: "spacious" and "jumpy" from The New York Times; "propulsive," "sandpapery" and "sweaty" from Pitchfork; "powerfully wiry" and "declamatory" from SPIN; "driving" and "really good" from Dusted. Descriptive responses from actual, verifiable employees here at Sub Pop Records range from "fidgety," "tight" and "loose" (Warehouse Manager Mark Arm), to "picaresque," "pithy" and "cogent" (International Sales and Distribution Honcho Gabe Carter), to "skronkeratchity" and "ffffromp-ful" (from our borderline incomprehensible Direct Sales Commander (Western Quadrant) Dean Whitmore). We look forward to new and inventive adjectives with the release of Bed & Bugs."

And Temporary Residences's bio of Pinback frontman Rob Crow:

"Rob Crow is the frontman for the relatively well-known group Pinback. When he's not touring with, or making albums for one of his many collaborations (including the aforementioned Pinback, The Ladies, Goblin Cock, Optiganally Yours, Other Men, Alpha Males, etc.), he makes solo records. His latest album, 'Living Well', is his most focused and heartfelt album yet. He writes some of the most addictive songs we have ever heard, and he often has a giant beard to boot."

TONIGHT: Bent Shapes @ 6PM! CORRECTION! At 6pm NOT 7pm

Tonight we have Bent Shapes performing in our loft at 6PM! (CORRECTION: an earlier post said 7pm, but they will play at 6pm!)

Formerly known as Girlfriends, this east coast trio kicked around their local Boston scene for a while, picking up a strong reputation for angular pop hooks and merciless live shows before reforming as Bent Shapes earlier this year. Looking to cement their status as a band, they compiled their various singles into an LP called Cull Shorts and then released their latest album Feels Weird in August this year. Chock full of deft songcraft and proto-punk hooks, Feels Weird tiptoes as it swaggers, calling to mind the Feelies or a C-86 band gone garage. It almost begs you to try and read the lyrics as you go in for another round of dancing. We at Origami can't get enough and are looking forward to sharing it with you in our loft right at 6PM!

So grab your favorite dancing shoes and meet us tonight at Origami for a night of good music. Want to get your dance on early? Give a listen to mid-tempo tune "Panel of Experts" below and get those legs warm! See you at 7!

P.S: I couldn't find a place to make this reference earlier, but the preferred method of dancing to Bent Shapes resembles the moves of the kid in the orange shirt from A Very Charlie Brown Christmas. Obscure reference?  Click Here. It's perfect right?

TONIGHT: OV + Goldenvoice Present Polica @ Fonda Theatre

As we approach Thanksgiving, OV would like to take a moment to recognize the importance of overstuffing oneself with as much good music as possible. To help bring this message home this holiday season, OV is presenting three musical delights in the next three days!

For our first musical course, us and our buds Goldenvoice are bringing you Polica tonight at the Fonda! We first caught wind of this band just prior to SXSW 2012 and invited them to play our showcase. Once we saw what they did live, we were hooked! Their latest album, Shulamith, has been on constant repeat here at OV since it's release on October 22nd, and creates an eery vibe with its complex arrangements of synths and beats. Combine that with the sultry R&B vocals of Channy Leanagh and you have a perfect record for the slip of autumn into winter. Or a slip into a food coma. You choose.

As you can probably tell, we're pretty stoked on Polica and hope you can make it out to the Fonda tonight to catch some sweet tunes with us. Marajuana Deathsquads opens and tickets are still onsale online.

Haven't had a chance to listen to Polica's new album Shulamith? Treat your ears to single "Tiff" below and we'll see you tonight!

TONIGHT: Corey (of Terry Malts) In-Store @ 7PM!

Tonight we have Corey (of Terry Malts) performing in our loft at 7PM!

Guitarist of OV favorite Terry Malts, Corey Cunningham recently released his first solo single, "Is It Really Really Real?" through Loglady Records in September. Featuring fuzzed out guitars, drone-like drum machines and Corey's whispery vocals, "Is It Really Really Real?" perfectly matches foggy SF days (Terry Malts & Corey's hometown) or lonely bedroom hours. Now an L.A transplant, Corey will be coming by to play our very own loft, and we're super excited to hear his new single and whatever other goodies he's got cooked up!

So come on down tonight at 7PM and get your groove on with us and Corey! In the meantime, give a listen to his first single "Is It Really Really Real?" below. See you at 7!

TONIGHT: Steel Cranes In-Store @ 7PM!

Tonight we have Steel Cranes performing in our loft at 7PM!

A wall of crunchy garage sounds, this Oakland based duo starting recording music early last year and have come a long way for such a young band. Mixing maxed out guitars and stripped down percussion, they call to mind early Black Sabbath or a YYY/White Stripes mix that's equal parts Karen O's wail and Jack White's guitar mastery. Touring in support of their debut album, Ouroboros, Steel Cranes will be fuzzing out our loft tonight at 7PM before a set at the Redwood Bar tomorrow night. We at Origami are always proponents of some good 'ol fashioned head-banging and can't wait to see these two girls tear up out loft tonight.

So come on down tonight at 7PM and join us for some sweet tunes and good times. To get a preview of how sore you'll neck will be tomorrow morning, check out the video for Steel Crane's song "Moving On" below. See you tonight!

TONIGHT: Waste Age In-Store @ 7PM!

Tonight we have Waste Age performing in our loft at 7PM!

Hailing from our southern neighbors in Orange County, this recently formed quartet packs melodic guitar lines, math-y compositions and strong lead vocals that pack both an intellectual and emotional punch. Calling to mind a more warmer and more guttural version of Menomena, Waste Age's musical chops and songwriting talent shine through their new split 10" with Edhochuli and they look like a band on the rise. We're stoked to have them in our loft tonight at 7PM and would love to share their great sound with you!

So if you're looking for a good start to your Saturday night, come on down to Origami Vinyl tonight at 7PM and join us for a evening of awesome music. Give a listen to the lead track on their split 10" below and we'll see you tonight!

Friday, November 15, 2013

TONIGHT: The So So Glos In-Store @ 7PM!

Prepare to get crazy! Tonight we have The So So Glos performing in our loft at 7PM!

For as calm, cool and collected as us Origami-ers are, lord knows we love to get rowdy when the moment comes. The So So Glos provide this moment and more. Hailing from Brooklyn, NY this punk quartet imbues the heady days of California pop-punk with a liberal dose of Clash-era snot nosed rock, creating a sound that is as frenetic as it is ear-worming. Bursting onto the scene in 2007, their self-titled debut album breathed life into an oftentimes rehashed scene, providing a fresh mix of punk standards and pop sensibilities that won that a dedicated legion of fans and critical praise. Now 6 years in, The So So Glos are a veteran act in age only, bringing their youthful energy and musical chops wherever they go. We're absolutely elated to have them in our loft tonight at 7PM and we hope to see you here! We won't sweat on you too hard, promise.

Need a jolt of energy? Give a listen to their 2013 single "Lost Weekend" below and we'll see you here at 7!
