OV PRESENTS: The Belle Brigade TONIGHT @ The Echo + El Prado Pre-Party!

We are excited to be co-presenting The Belle Brigade tonight at The Echo! It's gonna be a great time and tickets are FREE, so there's no excuse to miss this awesome show! Before the show, The Belle Brigade will be stopping by Record Club at El Prado to DJ some tunes and start the night with a bang!

Here's what The Echo had to say about the talented duo:

"Founded by siblings Barbara and Ethan Gruska, The Belle Brigade’s music is artfully arranged, with enticing melodies and pop harmonies, fueled by the interplay of driving rhythms between Barbara’s drums and Ethan’s guitars. Both are gifted songwriters – finding inspiration in the works of Peter Gabriel, John Lennon, The Beach Boys, Sly Stone, Harry Nilsson and countless others."

The Belle Brigade’s self-titled debut (co-produced with Matthew Wilder) was hailed as one of the best albums of 2011 by PASTE. Ann Powers, writing for the Los Angeles Times, took note of the “memorable voices and considerable charisma within songs that gleam with hooks and pour over with earnest emotion” while Newsday praised the album’s “sun-kissed ’70s SoCal sound” and SPIN observed, “The brother and sister team from LA, bring beautiful harmonies to their quirky folk rock.”

Their new album, “Just Because,” was recorded with engineer and co-producer Shawn Everett and mastered by the legendary Bob Ludwig. It will be released by ATO Records on March 25th, 2014."

So stop on by El Prado at 9:30 to catch The Belle Brigade spins some tunes and then follow 'em on over to the Echo and catch their new set! Future Islands @ CFAER! Kera & The Lesbians @ The Echo!

Along with FYF, OV is proud to present Future Islands at the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock! Having just announced their signing to 4AD, we're stoked to hear what Future Islands has up their sleeves for their new album, Singles, out March 24, 2014.

If you are one those fortunate souls that snagged a ticket before the show sold out, Emily's DJing between sets, making sure you're properly fed on good music before Future Islands takes the stage. As always, she puts the best songs on when she's got an ample supply of high fives, so show her some love!



If you aren't able to make it to Future Islands, Kera & The Lesbians' residency at The Echo starts tonight! If you caught their set at OV's FOMO Fest earlier this year, you know they're going places soon, so make sure you stop by The Echo any Monday this month. While all of their sets are gonna be spectacular, tonight's show is especially special as Kera & co. will be celebrating the cassette release of their newest album Year 23 out on Lolipop Records! Juan Wauters - NAP North American Poetry hits OV! Belle Brigade @ The Echo + El Prado After Party!

For the past few months, Christine and Emily have been pushing this 7" of the song, "Sanity" by The Beets frontman, Juan Wauters. He is finally releasing his full length solo album, NAP North American Poetry on Captured Tracks tomorrow Feb 4! We think it's so important that you get this record that we're offering a pre-order that comes with a signed poster. Emily plays Lo-Fang's Blue Film all day long!

12PM: OV opens - Emily spins around in her chair once and hits play on Blue Film.
2PM: Emily refuses to turn down "Look Away" while talking to Neil. Spins once in chair again.
3PM: Frank Ocean detour. Emily remembers how awesome 2012 was and is momentarily lost in thought.
4PM: Emily moves to Blood Orange. Somewhere along the line her head bobs. So does Neil's.
6PM: Emily remembers that she hasn't listened to Lo-Fang since 2PM. She quickly rectifies the situation.
7PM: Emily makes a joke about "#88" plays. Chuckles about it the whole way home.

Austin Leonard Jones In-Store!

Ostensibly a country/folk artist, Austin Leonard Jones's music contains the ghosts of Daniel Johnston and Harry Nilsson, but he mixes those sounds with tropicana beats and synth squiggles at every turn, creating a heady mix of sounds that floats by much easier than it should. We're gonna spend the evening trying to figure out exactly what he sounds like, and would really appreciate your help. Show starts at 7PM!

OV PRESENTS: Future Islands TONIGHT @ CFAER!

Good news buds! Along with FYF, OV is proud to present Future Islands at the Center for the Arts, Eagle Rock. Hailing from Baltimore, this synthpop band is known for their engaging and theatrical stage presence, especially from their vocalist, Samuel T. Herring. Needless to say this show is sold out, and people who were fortunate to snag a ticket are in for a crazy night. Having just announced their signing to 4AD, we were stoked to hear that they will release their new album Singles in March of 2014. We are looking forward to this album, especially after the masterpiece that was their last album, On The Water.

Here's what our friends at Ticketfly had to say about their previous album: "Future Islands' romantic synth sound scales new heights with On the Water, the Baltimore trio's most ambitious and fully realized statement yet. Built around a song cycle exploring love, loss, and memory, their latest album finds the band continuing to deliver pounding rhythms, swelling melodies, and undeniable hooks - but finding new ways to probe inner space and tug at hearts. Convening in March 2011 in Elizabeth City, NC's historic, waterfront Andrew S. Sanders House, vocalist Samuel T. Herring, bassist William Cashion, and keyboardist Gerrit Welmers lived together in a space that served as both studio and sleeping quarters. The band used this tranquil retreat to refine their most reflective and mature batch of songs to date, adding new material in the process. What emerged is a lush yet visceral album about two parallel journeys--one physical and one psychological. Opening for the talented trio is Vice Cooler, an artist known for mixing beats in a way in which he produces unique and distinct sounds. His strange (in a good way) sounds and variations of patterns and beats make for a very interesting musical experience, and his live performance is no doubt an even greater one. Needless to say this night will be a treat - it's a sold out event that's bound to be a crowd-pleaser!

Things have been a bit quiet here at Origami lately, but since last week's together PANGEA release show, the hits have been coming left and right! Here's a quick breakdown so you don't get left out in the cold!

Tuesday, January 28th - Hospitality's Trouble hits OV! Dum Dum Girls Release Party!

We've been dying to hear this newest release from these Brooklyn upstarts, and the time is almost here!
The first thing you might notice about Hospitality's sophomore album "Trouble" is what you don't hear. The process of completing the album was, for the band, one of learning to accept silence, to let that empty space exist no matter what it might awaken or evoke. You could catch glimpses of these dark and unexplored places in the margins of Hospitality's 2012 self-titled debut, but they are the very heart of 'Trouble". If you listen closely, you can hear a band pushing against their own boundaries and limitations until they find the very air around them subtly but perceptibly changed. Listen HERE. On Thursday afternoon, La Luna's will be doing some filming in the loft so come catch a couple songs while they play! La Luna's is a three piece garage rock/surf band with Sasha from Spindrift on vocals and currently, Patty Schemel on drums. Things kick off at 2 pm.

Our buddies, Reputante, are in town from NYC and are playing with Lola Wolf at the Echo on Thursday night. (Yes, we realize that all these shows are at the Echo but come on, they're killing it this week!) Listen to the sweet sweet sounds of James Levy's crooner voice and get excited for this show!!

Oh boy are we excited for this. Tonight we're throwing a kick-ass premiere party for together Pangea's new album Badillac! To make things even better, the boys themselves are gonna play a set up in the loft right at 7PM!

Though they've only got 2013's Snakedog to their new name, together Pangea have been rocking butts for a good long time, playing shows all over So Cal. Alongside almost every local band you can think of, they've slowly but surely garnered a frenzied following in DIY scenes at home and abroad. After the release of their Snakedog single earlier this year (one of OV's faves) they participated in Burger Record's epic "Burgerama Caravan of Stars" tour this fall, spreading their teachings of raw, unpredictable and intelligent rock throughout the U.S.

Home once again, these dudes are set to release their newest album, Badillac, on Harvest Records January 21st. Now while a punk streak has always run through the band's core, Badillac looks to turn away from what bassist Danny Bengston calls the "punky bubblegum vibe" that the band feels they've been lumped in with through their association with Burger Records, and move towards songs that are "a little more melancholy, a little heavier, a little darker." Citing influences from Pete Seeger to 90s giants Weezer & Smashing Pumpkins, Badillac looks poised to push together Pangea both towards new sonic territories, but also closer to their core identity. What that identity might be, no one knows, but together Pangea plan on embodying it completely with their unique blend of fist-pumping hooks, ragged ambivalence and waves of distortion that will send you back all the way to 1992. We seriously can't wait.

Now these dudes command a pretty big audience, so we're only gonna be guaranteeing attendance for the first 50 pre-orders of Badillac (it comes with a free cassette!) on our online shop.
