Our friends, Light in the Attic, have done it again with reissuing an incredible long lost gem. This is THE perfect album for a lazy day and a joint!

The Hectors play epic indie rock...the kind meant for arenas. Reminds of Lush meets Pixies.

Seasons play moody indie rock with a smidge o' brit pop thrown in for good measure.

SLOW SKATE live in the loft tonight at 7pm

This evening we welcome Slow Skate (from Seattle, WA) to our loft for an assuredly fantastic night of noir-ish folk (and maybe even a Def Leppard cover). At times reminiscent of names like Feist or Blonde Redhead (at their mellowest) we think you'll dig the way their brand of atmosphere takes over our shop. We're very excited to see them ourselves.

Here's a little blurb about their latest 7" release "St. Valentine": "Love Bites," for those that recall, is one great monster ballad by the one and only Def Leppard. It's been covered magnificently by Slow Skate and is available on a 7" single titled "St. Valentine." Limited to 300 marble-colored records, the packaging is oh so eco-friendly (recycled chipboard, vegetable based inks) and oh so good. Sadly it's only two songs (the aforementioned Def Leppard gem with the smooth "St. Valentine"). - Three Imaginary Girls

Check 'em out!

ANIKA listening party tonight at The Echo

Tonight, Origami & Stones Throw combine forces to bring you a treat for yr earholes! Join us at 10pm as we take you on the mindfuck journey which is the Anika LP listening party.

Here's what our friends over at Stones Throw have to say about it:
"Political Journalist" isn't a credential we usually have in musician's bios, but this is exactly what Anika was doing while living between Berlin and Bristol earlier this year when she met Geoff Barrow. The producer was looking for a new singer to work with his band Beak>, and it was immediately clear they shared the same musical vision, including a love of punk, dub and 60s girl groups.

Just a week later Anika and Beak> (Barrow, Billy Fuller and Matt Williams) went into the studio to begin recording material. The resulting album was recorded in twelve days, live, with the four together in one room. Dub with no overdubs. The collaboration is political, trashy, dub, punk, funk ... a cohesive sound, and and experience in uneasy listening.

In the tradition of short-lived but deeply influential 99 Records and the NYC's 80s No Wave nexus, the nine songs on Anika run the gamut from experimental rock ("Yang Yang", "Officer Officer") to covers of folk ("Masters of War") and pop songs ("Terry", "I Go to Sleep"), while showcasing reverb-drenched ancient drum machine rhythms.

Anika comes to you as part of our new weekly series of record releases every Monday on the back patio of The Echo. Come listen to this fantastic new record & enjoy the new outdoor bar along with sweet jams spun by your favorite Origami nerdlings!

Make it so #1!

Premiering This Week on On The Record...Black Apples!

ONTHERECORD.TV: THE BLACK APPLES - "WILD" from Write The Snake on Vimeo.

With the January release of their self-titled debut LP we knew it wouldn’t be long before we had a chance to catch the Black Apples in the loft delivering the kind of raw psychedelic surf explosions they’re known for. Headed by brothers Campbell and Andrew Scarborough, the Black Apples originally hail from Colorado but have swiftly made themselves a favorite of the Echo Park scene for their consistently fantastic live performances and blistering energy.

KXSC presents MAGIC BULLETS tonight at 7pm

Come come come!!

Join us and our favorite KXSC homies as we present MAGIC BULLETS live in our loft this evening. (Hopefully the weather won't be as much a hinderance as it was for the FANTASTIC Generationals instore y'all missed last night...knock on wood)

If you're not familiar with MAGIC BULLETS here are some eloquent thoughts on them - "A strong Smiths sensibility shines through [their] songs for sure, and while everyone seems to be going the fuzz-pop route these days it's actually kind of refreshing right now to hear these flowing dreamy-pop nuggets that soar so nicely on their own without relying on lo-fidelity fuzz for instant credibility. ...We're sure these guys wish they could have come of age in the early '80s Manchester scene but we're super happy they are here now creating songs that while nod to that era still sound so fresh and relevant..." - Aquarius Records

And while dancing around the shop today listening to the brand- spanking- new MAGIC BULLETS 7" we decided we also hear a healthy dose Adam & The Ants & Talking Heads rounding out their sound. Tonight is gonna be a fun one!!

7PM | FREE | ALL-AGES (per the usual)

See ya laters!

And please, feel free to get to know our friends:

NETHERFRIENDS today at 6pm

Emerging from the rooftops of Chicago, Netherfriends are a three piece experimental, psychedelic pop band...that bastard-psych-pop-catchy as hell band that you’ve been searching for. Originally a solo project for Shawn Rosenblatt, their songs feature heavily layered arrangements with group sing-a-longs, spare pianos, synths, glockenspiels and other hard to place, but familiar sounds. What sets them apart from others of this ilk though is the striking wit in Shawn Rosenblatt's lyrics.

Come hear for yourself this evening.

YUCK instore TODAY at 4pm

Over this past year, Yuck have emerged as one of the best and brightest new bands, not to mention one of the most mercurial and unpredictable. Now they're hitting town in support of their new album appropriately titled "Yuck". This is a confident, wildly ambitious record, but also one which brims over with a ragged warmth and tenderness, tipping its hat at alt music heroes past such as East River Pipe, Dinosaur Jr. and Sparklehorse while at the same time retaining a unique identity entirely its own; a band capable of sprinting off in pretty much any direction you can think of, so diverse and fully realised is its anthemic and offbeat guitar rock. This band is rough and edgy as well as whiny and head-bobbingly catchy. They even make weird music videos with naked girls being eaten by werewolf-like monsters.

After hearing about how amazing their set was last night we're sure you won't want to miss catching them in our loft this afternoon.

Young Hunting On OnTheRecord.tv This Week!! + New Adds and Restocks!

We're stoked to present this performance from LA natives, Young Hunting. These guys are a personal favorite of the Origami & OTR gang and for good reason. They expertly work the dreamy, harmony-rich, folksy sound that characterizes some of the better new California bands. Blog, I Guess I'm Floating, described them as a "post-grunge Harry Nilsson stuck in slow motion." (A description we like not least of which because we'd like to hang out with Harry Nilsson in slow motion.)

Foxtails Brigade on OnTheRecord this week!

Foxtails Brigade's Laura Weinbach and Anton Patzner are no stranger to performing in improvised spaces. The two got their start playing as street musicians in their native Oakland. So it was no surprise that they were game when we suggested a performance on the Origami rooftop. They even treated us to an impromptu performance of "The Rainbow Connection" when a rainbow briefly appeared. (Keep an eye out for it in the background)

in this video they perform Long Day, from their album La Nuit. Their music is ghostly Victorian pop that evokes a soundtrack to some half-remembered gothic Disney masterpiece. Lovely for a warm summer night or a snowy winter's day. (also check out Anton's other project, the string metal juggernaut known as Judgement Day. It's RAD!)

Foxtails Brigade - Long Day - Live at Origami Vinyl from plastic pearl on Vimeo.

Chasing Kings Live in the Loft TONIGHT @ 8pm

Chasing Kings grace the loft tonight at 8pm to celebrate the release of their debut 10", Just Our Luck.

Here's what our friends over at The Vinyl District had to say about the band...

"In 2009, Silver Lake’s Chasing Kings released their debut EP “The Current State Of Our Future” … a record that I still keep on repeat for days at a time. Now, I will get to hear their indie pop songs that boast soul and folk influences on vinyl. And as you know, everything sounds even better on vinyl. Chasing Kings released new songs “Just Our Luck” and “Maybe It’s The Distance” in December but their 10″ can be found at Origami Vinyl in Echo Park now. The band’s sound is catchy pop/rock/soul all blended together beneath lead singer Matthew Schwartz’s ruggedly raw vocals that would make you think he’s had either way too much Whiskey or he’s older in age. But Schwartz and the rest of the band are barely 21 years old, and once you give them a listen, you won’t believe that." - Ashley Eliot
