Filter Presents: Little Wings in the Origami Loft TONIGHT

Little Wings is the brainchild of frontman Kyle Field and that brainchild has had another child. That child is the album, "Black Grass." FILTER is so excited about this newborn, that we are presenting a record release for Little Wings.

If you happen to be in the LA area, or feel like traveling, the Little Wings record release show for Black Grass will be taking place at Origami Vinyl this Thursday, March 31st and it's FREE!

All Tiny Creatures "Harbors" Premiere Party TONIGHT + Last Night of Spirit Vine Rezzie!

TONIGHT, out on the back patio of The Echo, we premiere the debut album Harbors from All Tiny Creatures released by Hometapes!

This, folks, is the complete package! From the music down to the art, you are really in for a treat!

All Tiny Creatures is led by Collections of Colonies of Bees / Volcano Choir member Thomas Wincek. Harbors features vocal contributions from Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Roberto Carlos Lange (Helado Negro / Epstein) and members of Megafaun. The album pulls from krautrock and minimalist contemporaries with dynamic vocals that capture a moody yet beautiful texture. Before you are aware of it, you are nodding your head to the beat and enjoying the sunshine.

The art is also something to speak of. (Check it out below). The album features old-style tip-on gatefold packaging. The 2xLP are 45RPMs for maximum sound quality and come in two separate opaque color sets. Your randomly chosen product will contain a blue and yellow pair OR a green and red pair. The LP also comes with a digital download of the album. These babies are sure to be collector's items.

CulDeSac Kids: We’ve been holding this video hostage for quite sometime now. The footage was shot at KPFK studios during the bands recording of their 7”. The video finds Corey Judge front & center on KPFK’s legendary grand piano, donated to the station by the Beach Boys in the late 60’s. So happy to finally unleash this footage, it was truly a last minute idea to grab a camera and hit record. Thanks JP! We hope you enjoy our memories as it still feels like just yesterday.

The Pains of Being Pure At Heart have had quite a run over the last eighteen months. They released their self-titled debut last February on Slumberland to universal acclaim, racking up features in magazines like Spin, Rolling Stone and NME, earning Best New Music status from Pitchfork, and touring the US and Europe non-stop. They began 2010 with a month-long tour of Japan, New Zealand and Australia, and wrapped it up with a series of west coast dates with label-mates Weekend and a triumphant return to England.


All the while they've been working on new songs, releasing the Higher Than The Stars EP last fall, the excellent single Say No To Love this past June, and beginning work on their second album. To help bring this new batch of tunes to life they enlisted the help of producer Flood (Smashing Pumpkins, U2, PJ Harvey) and ace mixer Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus & Mary Chain). The result is Belong, a massive sounding album, sonically ambitious but still grounded in the peerless song-craft that The Pains are known for.

A little SXSW update (Pt. 2)

Well I woke up kinda late again...Its just the way it goes out here when free beers are being consumed and your hotel is 4 miles outta town.

I got into Austin around 1:30 and headed straight to our party with our friends from Everloving Records and LA Record. The event was being held at Design Within Reach, which makes for one of the most unique venues here at SXSW. Nothing like having rock bands sprawled out amongst super expensive modern furniture and a free beer bar for attendees. Somehow it works though.

I met up with Jack and Max who shoot videos under the OnTheRecord moniker. You should know them by know as they do all the in-store and around-the-store videos for Origami. The guys were getting set-up to document the event and do interviews with some of the bands which you will get to see very soon.

The first band up was Light Pollution who are on Carpark. The band was very loud and the sound guy seemed to be having a day where he didn't care too much about dialing in the levels. It was unfortunate because I could tell the songs were there, but it was coming across more like noise, and I don't think these guys were intending to sound like a noise outfit. It's too bad really when these bands travel all the way out here, most of them on their own dime, play a gazillion shows, to only have the sound guy fuck em over. Note to bands: If you are making the trek out here, spend the extra $500 and bring your own sound guy, it will pay dividends!

Light Pollution

Next up was Herman Dune, a band I have never had the opportunity to check out, so I was pretty excited. They are a two-piece from France that showcase inventive drumming over feedback strewn Neil Young-ish guitars and deep toned folkish vocals. Right up my alley. They sounded really great and will definitely pick-up their music when I get back home. As they laid into the 3rd verse of their 3rd song, the amateur sound guy walks to the back and taps on the drummers shoulder. The drummer, stunned, leans back as said sound guy whispers in his ear. Then the sound guy hops on stage behind the guitarist/vocalist and waits for him to stop singing. As he pulls away from the mic launching into a guitar riff, the sound guy taps on his shoulder and goes "You've got 5 minutes" WTF!? The band, pissed off and rightly so, stop playing mid song and throw their equipment shouting "Fuck This!" I don't blame them. I have never seen that ever. At least wait til the song is over. I was bummed. I only got to hear 2 and 3/4 songs, but it was worth it.



After that, I decided to make a run across town to see OMD at Stubb's. I was 10 minutes late :( It was my first fail of the week. Damn! I grabbed a hot dog and made my way back to our party to see one of my favorite SoCal bands, The Growlers.

The Growlers always bring a good vibe with their stone-y, surf rock. It's always a ton of fun and feels like you are all gettin' high in some friend of a friend's backyard party. It's so inclusive which I feel is so rare in these days of live indie rock music. It's inclusive in the sense of how those old hardcore shows were when everyone was screaming along and sweating all over each other. Only know its way slowed down and everyone's got a little dance goin'. It's so refreshing.

Once they were done, it was time to get dinner with our friend Lio, who co-owns Kanine Records with his wife Kay (who had to stay back in New York because she is like 7 1/2 months pregnant). Lio is really good people. He's extremely generous and fun and supportive. Also attending dinner was We Are Country Mice. A great band on Lio and Kay's label who had also played at OV a few months back. They have a new album coming out in June which you need to look out for. These guys are great.

After dinner, I got in touch with my buddy Bekah Zietz at Sub Pop. Her and I had been trying to meet up for the past couple days and couldn't seem to get it together. She was able to sneak me in to the Sub Pop showcase which enabled me to share some beers with the Sub Pop crew and catch an awesome set from....OBITS! Fuck yes!

Obits is Rick Froberg's (Pitchfork/Drive Like Jehu/Hot Snakes) latest band who put out their debut record about a year and half ago. That record made my top 10 that year. Pretty much anything Rick does, I drool over. The dude just flows creative energy. you see so many 22 year old kids making it big on blogs these days when they can barely play their instruments and think they are hot shit. Those kids need to go see 3 guys play in the next year to get a little lesson: Neil Young, Thurston Moore, and Rick Froberg. These dudes all kick so much ass and give it their all each and every night. There's no ego when they are on stage, it's just pure passion for what they do. Obits were just that last night. Needless to say I was very sweaty after they were done.

Papercuts were up next. I really hadn't heard too much from them. I've heard their singles, but had yet to plug in the albums. Lots of people come into the shop to buy their albums, so I was pretty excited to hear what they had to offer. It was quite a 180 from Obits and it took me a couple songs to get into it. But once I was locked in, I was bobbing my head and enjoying their laid-back San Francisco reverb driven dream pop.

Papercuts

I was starting to fade pretty quickly from all the Tex Mex I had earlier so decided that Dum Dum Girls would be my last stop on the night. I've seen the girls quite a few times and if you've followed us for awhile, it's no secret that I'm a fan of what Kristen "Dee Dee" does. The real focus live for me however is Sandy Vu. Sandy is one of the sickest drummers live period. With the type of music the Dum Dum Girls make it would be very easy for any drummer to just lay back in the pocket and play simple beats. Not Sandy, she approaches the kit as if she were in some band like the Buzzcocks. She hits so hard, and really brings the energy, which was the perfect antidote to get me to flag down a cab and retire for the night.

A little SXSW update (Pt. 1)

SO yesterday was my first full day at this year's SXSW. There's always a little piece of me that dreads it. Every year it seems to get more and more crowded and chaotic, which means it's harder to get into shows and meet up with friends you haven't seen in some time. The last couple of years I've figured out the best approach is to be completely oblivious to who is playing and not to adhere to any sort of schedule. Of course, Origami is involved in 4 events this year, so I have to be in certain places at certain times, however the added freedom around these shows enables me to go through the day and night with the ability to see things I may have never known about and tag along with friends who may be on a stricter agenda. So far day 1 worked out incredibly.

After waking up a little late, I headed into East Austin, a part of the city in which I hadn't explored too much in years prior. On first impression, it seems this is the part of town that's really coming up. Dive-y bars, great little family owned restaurants, and food trucks galore. Seems like my kinda place and was shocked I hadn't really ventured in these parts. I quickly devoured a BBQ brisket sandwich from the BBQ School bus and was on my way to our joint party with Rawkblog, Twenty-Four Bit, and Etnies. I was able to catch a great performance from Little Scream who are signed to Secretly Canadian. They have a very beautiful approach to their music with soaring harmonies, wind and string instruments, and keys. It was a nice mellow set to start the day. Next up was Ravens & Chains, who kinda disappointed. It had some Arcade Fire/Bruce Springsteen elements to it, but it seemed a bit uninspired. At that point I was finishing up beer 2 and heard that there was a Japanese showcase happening next door. I opted to go grab a beer over there and scope the scene.

Let's just say it was a bit emotional to be there. Seeing these young Japanese kids pouring their hearts out through their music and knowing that for them this may be a temporary moment when the recent disaster wasn't on their minds. It was pretty awesome and I was so proud that this collection of musicians made the trek all the way to Texas to continue the fulfillment their dreams.

I then headed back to our event to catch Pepper Rabbit. Last year, they played the shop and it was really impressive. They sparked some comparisons to the mellower side of Grizzly Bear and what-not. This year, it just seemed they were a little less enthusiastic on stage. Maybe they were tired, or had played a ton of shows already, but it just seemed to be a bit sleepy.

From there we left the party and headed down the street to Shangri-La to see some friends and catch La Sera's set. It was a great little touch of 50's inspired pop and gave us that mid afternoon second wind. Katy's voice sounded great!

Once they were done, I tagged along with the Etnies crew to hit the Vice Records party. Since I didn't have a badge, it was a small struggle to get into the show. Thanks to my buddy Phil from FYF, he was able to work his magic and get me and my friends in.

This show was AWESOME! It kicked off with the Puerto Rican punk rock outfit, Davila 666, who just continue to blow heads off. They are so fresh! Next up was OFF! Keith Morris has been coming into Origami since we opened and it was nice to return the favor in terms of support. It brought me back to my high school days and I caught myself banging my head and desiring to hit the mosh pit. Maybe that was beer 6 in me at this point. Luckily, I still had some sense in me and kept myself at bay. I must say, OFF! is probably the best thing I have seen down here and it will be VERY hard to top it. After OFF! went off, Black Lips took the stage. These guys have a ton of energy and are like the early era Beatles with a punk rock attitude. Super hooky songs that are played super loose and with anarchistic energy. Once Black Lips were finished the next band was a mystery and everyone around was trying to figure out who the surprise guest may be. At first we all thought it was going to be Death From Above considering they are a Vice Records artist. No Luck. The second guess was Odd Future as all of them were hangin out. No Luck. At long last it was DOM who set-up to play. To be honest I haven't really understood all the hyper surrounding this band, but decided to stick around to catch a couple songs. Yep, still don't understand what all the hoopla is about. Whatevs...

OFF!

Black Lips

Around this time, I was handed a silver bracelet that got me into the Spin Shed at Stubb's. WHOA! It was a pretty big hook-up since Stubb's is where all the big bands and secret shows happen. I haven't been there in a couple of years, because it's always a project trying to get in. Not now. Which meant I was able to close out the night with TV on the Radio. Which are awesome and I am so glad to see they are back to making music together again.

Computer Magic Premiere Party & In-store TONIGHT!

And for our next trick... COMPUTER MAGIC! This one's a double header because, for the first time ever, our premiere party includes a live performance by the artist... That's some next level shit! Computer Magic flew all the way out from NYC to celebrate the White Iris release of her limited edition 12" with a special performance in the Origami Loft, tonight at 7pm.

Then at 9pm, walk with us to The Echo where the party continues! Computer Magic will join us on the back patio where she'll personally spin some of her favorite tunes. At 10pm we will play the 12" in its entirety and offer it for sale!

Breaking out of the gate with pure Kraftwerk arpeggios and gated snare snaps, don't expect any sharp turns: This race track is all smooth curves and infinite loops, right down to the subtly vocoder'd vocals and synth choir chords.

So if you want to bump this while you're gliding your hovercraft down the autobahn, don't forget to polish the decks before you go, because though your passengers might content themselves soaking in the totemic landscape, these tunes could inspire a whole new paradigm of robot dance moves.

The Computer Magic behind "Electronic Fences" is not a German automaton or an invisible forcefield, but a 20-year young girl named Danzie/Danz/Danielle who DJs sometimes in the Lower East Side and has some serious design chops, if her blog is an indication.

There's something about the pairing of CARNIVORES and BAKE SALE on the way to Austin that has us craving meat pies. And there's just sooo much that's sooo right about that. Join us for a sonic meat pie equivalent tonight at 5pm.

Carnivores are based in Hotlanta, have a following that includes one Jarvis Cocker and just released their "Chandelier" EP on Double Phantom Digital.

Four tracks evoke comparisons to Black Tambourine and Mazzy Star as water-tight pop melodies float delicately atop a tumultuous sea of fuzzed-out guitar swells and heart-shuddering rhythmic surges. Weave with rainbow ties to your heart, pull it out, and devour in an ecstasy of violence and humanizing passion. Recorded in part by Neil Weir at Old Blackberry way—also produced, recorded, and mixed by Red Pens' frontman Howard Hamilton III.

Record Club gets crazy TONIGHT w/ Tim Heidecker and Davin Wood + Kurt Vile Spectacular!!!

WHOA! Tonight is gonna be so much fun! Tim Heidecker (Tim & Eric) and Davin Wood are releasing their new album Heidecker & Wood Starting From Nowhere next Tuesday on our friend Pierre De Reeder's (Rilo Kiley) label. All three of those guys are gonna crash Record Club tonight and take over the decks to premiere the record for you! Crazy right!?

Then, THEN, after that, we got the new Kurt Vile album making its debut spin. We're pretty sure this is an album of the year candidate. itsssssssss sssssmokin! We'll be giving away a pair of tickets to his show on April 21st at The Echo tonight too!

Our weekly get together at El Prado starts at 9pm tonight. Come listen to your neighborhood generated "mix-tape" whilst drinking craft ales and delicious wine. Sign-up sheet for next week will be at the table in the back. If you've never participated before, please get there early to get your name on the list!
