OV WEEKLY: Too much of a good thing is... GREAT

Making this list I started thinking to myself: “Damn! I’m so lucky to live in a city where cool shit happens EVERY NIGHT!” Sure I’m tired all the time and have no more money because of this place, but it’s TOTALLY worth it. Los Angeles rules!!

Monday, March 16th

This week starts with an indie-rock legend gracing The Smell. RedRumsey – AKA Vern Rumsey of Unwound (!!!) – is playing one of our favorite local all-ages DIY spaces alongside Rearranged Face (members of the Mae Shi and Residual Echoes), David Scott Stone, and Kraig Grady. RedRumsey will also be dropping by Origami this Wednesday for an early in-store performance at 3 PM. Ditch work and join us for that one!

Tuesday, March 17th

Sufjan Stevens Silent Listening Party @ Origami, 6pm

When we launched the pre-order for the limited clear vinyl version of Sufjan’s new album ‘Carrie & Lowell,’ we were blown away by the response! We’re really excited to team up with Asthmatic Kitty Records to bring you a Silent Listening Party of the album. These are happening at very select record stores around the country so this is kind of a big deal! If you haven’t pre-ordered the album, you can do it here or in-store and we’ll automatically add you to the RSVP list for this really special event. When you show up, we’ll give you cordless headphones to listen to the album on your own while you peruse or just hang out. This will be the only way to hear the album before the internet gets it’s grubby hands on it, and before it comes out on 3/31! Space is limited, so you must pre-order the album to reserve your headphones!

Record Club @ El Prado

Once you've got that new release haul, you best be bringing your faves down to RCLA at El Prado to give it a public spin! The best place to hear what your local buds are digging, RCLA gives YOU the opportunity to spin your records and even snag a free drink in the process! The fun gets started at 9PM, so dig out those LPs and get ready for a night of great music!

Wednesday, March 18th

Dub Club, LA’s long running weekly roots reggae party run by mastermind Tom Chasteen, is once again taking over both The Echoand Echoplex. This week Chasteen is joined by DJ Boss Harmony and other guests sure to tickle you reggae lovers’ earholes.

Thursday, March 19th

Two of my favorite dublab DJs, Suzanne Kraft and Parker host their weekly musical takeover of El Condor, DINNER! Start your weekend early with a journey through the outer-limits of TASTE and SOUND.

Friday, March 20th

The good people with impeccable taste over at Mount Analogue are hosting the 11th edition of their revered Nuit Noire series at Jewel’s Catch One! This time we’re getting some amazing exclusive and debut performances by dark techno luminaries like Shifted, Tommy Four Seven, Adam X, and many more. There is NO better place to brood and dance at the same time!

Saturday, March 21st

John Doe and Exene Cervenka of beloved Los Angeles punx, X are performing alongside Robyn Hitchcock at the First Unitarian Church! Sounds like a good opportunity to pray to some true rock n’ roll deities!

Sunday, March 22nd

Broken Water, one of my favorite bands from the insanely fertile scene in Olympia, WA are playing the Echo this Sunday for this weeks edition of Part Time Punks. Broken Water play music in the tradition of northwest indie-rock greats like Unwound, (good week for Unwound fans!!) with some seriously beautiful shoegazing elements. Don’t sleep on this show!
