10/1: OV Presents Phosphorescent @ El Rey
You know, it might just be me, but Phosphorescent is really hard to spell. There's just too many silent sounds going on and I thought I was done trying to spell elements in high school. Good thing my ineptitude at spelling didn't keep me away, as under Phosphorescent, indie country songwriter Matthew Houck has recorded some of the best alt-country around today.
Ever since his revelatory record A Hundred Times or More in 2003, Matthew has put out album after album of songs that toe the line between neo-folk and traditional country, creating a sound that really can only be described as Americana. With his new album, Muchacho, Matthew both embraces his traditional Americana sound and pushes it in new directions, incorporating more electronic textures and instrumentation that recall early Animal Collective or the more adventurous sounds of Will Oldham. Winning critical praise across the board, Matthew has taken Muchacho on tour and will be performing at the El Rey this Tuesday at 9PM!
Advance tickets are on sale at Origami for $22 and are almost sold out, so come on by and pick up your tickets ASAP! For more information about the show click here and take a listen to the Muchacho's lead single "Song for Zula" below in preparation for a night of kickass music!

TONIGHT 9/29: Oneohtrix Point Never "R Plus Seven" Premiere Party!
We're hosting a premiere party TONIGHT (9/29) at 8pm for Oneohtrix Point Never's new record R Plus Seven (Warp Records)!
Daniel Lopatin, the mastermind behind OPN, has been churning out some of the best experimental electronic music since 2007 and his new record has all the ingredients to continue that trend, with plenty of Daniel's trademark drone soundscapes and adventurous samples. However, this time around, the dance has been turned up just a notch as well, adding a new element of armchair head-bobbing to the already classic OPN sound. It's a delight of a record, and we at Origami are super excited to be premiering it before its October 1st release date in-shop this Sunday!
So, come on by the shop at 8pm tonight and join us in getting our head-bob on! As always, there will be free pizza and beverages provided. See you then!

Are We Crazy? Two Days of Listening Parties!
Oneohtrix Point Never - R Plus Seven |
Diego Garcia - Paradise |
This Sunday and Monday we will be hosting two - count 'em - TWO album premiere parties!
On Sunday Sept. 29th at 8pm, we will be spinning the new Oneohtrix Point Never album R Plus Seven two days before its release date, and given OPN's past albums, you'll need those two days to prepare for a second spin. Continuing the trend of his last solo album, Replica, OPN has created hauntingly beautiful ambient soundscapes and experimental samples that are equal parts sit-and-think and stand-up-and-groove. So whatever your listening inclination, stop on by this Sunday at 8pm and join us for a great time. As always, there will be free pizza and beverages provided.
For our second listening party on Monday Sept. 30th at 8pm, we will be playing Diego Garcia's new album Paradise! The former front-man of the NY-based Elefant, his new album is a departure from Elefant's post-punk sound and instead draws influence from the best of 60s and 70s AM rock, lending a perfect breezy feeling for those last remnants of summer. In celebration of those last days, we will be getting all fancy on you with some wonderful white wine and cheese courtesy of our buddy Matt Kaner, Wine Director at Bar Covell. We'll also be giving away tickets to Diego's 11/4 show at the Troubadour as well as a test pressing of the album!
So there you have it. Two nights, two awesome albums and two reasons to stop by Origami this Sunday and Monday night at 8pm! See you there!

9/25: OV Co-Presents Ojai Rancho Inn Summer Series w/ No Age!
The last installment of the Ojai Rancho Inn Summer Series is happening tonight with a performance by L.A.'s very own No Age.
Forever cascading forward in a positive direction, gleefully instinctive, No Age erupt out of your speakers, blasting away the clouds above L.A.’s smoggy cityscape to reveal a solar flaring sun. With an ecstatic force bubbling around and beyond their music, they release contagious energy like they’re main-lining a field full of whirring wind turbines, while tuned into an ancient celestial power source.
The Ojai Rancho Inn will be opening its doors at 4 p.m. on show days for ticket holders to enjoy a meal on the venue lawn (bring a picnic or grab a bite from the on-site food truck), sip a cold beer, or cool off with a dip in the pool. Music starts at 8pm.
Throughout the summer we've teamed up with our media sponsors, KXLU 88.9 FM Los Angeles and KCSB 91.9 Santa Barbara for on-air ticket giveaways. The Dawn of Zines at OV! (Audience Participation Required!)
2013 has been a huge year for OV and we have even bigger plans for 2014! You thought the online store was big, but we're just getting started! We're really excited to announce that we'll be adding a zine section to the shop!
As you may or may not know, OV has been putting out a quarterly zine for the past year and some months. Zines have always played an integral role in the music, and specifically the vinyl scene. They celebrate specific subcultures with art, writing, and just general creativity. We love the versatility of a zine - it can be funny or sad or smart or informative or weird or whatever the hell you want it to be.
And now, this is where YOU come in! Starting now, we'll be taking submissions for zines to put on consignment at the shop. This year when we helped judge the FYF Fanzine contest, we were overwhelmed by the creativity and hard work that everyone had put into their zines. We want to continue to support our local creative types. So, whether you've already been making a zine or if this inspires you to start one, we want to see it. Every month, we'll choose 6 to feature on our web store and in the shop. We're even building a special shelf dedicated to all things zine. In January, we'll have the first batch for sale!
If you would like to submit your zine for consideration, please email Emily: emily@origamiorigami.com. And she'll send you some guidelines and instructions.
Yip Deceiver In-Store Tonight @ 7PM!

Their debut album Medallius came out a week ago and delivers 11 tracks of their ridiculously addictive beats. “Medallius is an attitude and a lifestyle,” Dobby says of the philosophy of their made-up title. “Medallius is always keeping an elegant attitude regardless of how trashy a situation is.”

9/22: OV Presents The Orwells @ CFAER
Have you guys heard The Orwells yet? If you have you'll know why we're so excited to be a part of their show this Sunday in Eagle Rock. If you don't, that's cool, but we highly recommend you check them out if you are into sounds like Balls-Out-Rock-N-Roll, Psychedelic Garage from those incredible Pebbles compilations, and Stooges-inspired Punk Rock. These kids (I call them kids because they are all teenagers) from suburbs of Chicago absolutely SLAY live and were one of the top 3 things I saw at FYF Fest this year.
You should check out their video for "Who Needs You" below to get a sense of what I'm talking about.
The show this Sunday is just about sold out, so be sure to come by OV and get your tickets asap! It's taking place at Eagle Rock Center For The Arts and is All Ages. Tickets are only $14.50 here at the shop. Christine and Emily will be spinning tunes for you all night as an added bonus!

TONIGHT: Soft Shadows In-Store @ 7PM!
Join us tonight in the loft for the dreamy sounds of Soft Shadows.
"Weary, lo-fi over a thin vapor of reverb, listening to Soft Shadows (fmr. Sundaze) reminds me of that part in “Lost in Translation” when Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray’s character take a cab ride through Tokyo while “Sometimes” by My Bloody Valentine plays in the background. Yeah, you know that scene — the shallow focus, low light, Kevin’s whispering, that feeling of something cool and familiar." - Sounds Better With Reverb
The debut release of Soft Shadows is the product of the previous band, Sundaze, parting ways. With the new formation, the band shifted from heavy, distorted guitars to a more vocal central mix. Lighter and free. This album is not about personal experiences, but an observational piece based on simple fictional characters living their day to day lives. Influenced by "Being John Malkovich," each song is a short, limited, low ceiling, cabinet filing window into these individual characters.
The balance between synthesized and acoustic sounds is a push and pull between June's fascination with electronics, yet always falling back head over heels for guitars. Vintage synthesizers and drum machines coupled with the warmth of all Fender jazzmasters, jaguars and amplifiers. The band sought to create the right mix and succeeded in marrying the two in sonic harmony. The track "Whatever You Say" is the centerpiece for this record, in which all other songs were written around. Check it out below and we hope to see you tonight at 7!The debut release of Soft Shadows is the product of the previous band, Sundaze, parting ways. TONIGHT: KG Bird In-Store @ 7PM!
SORRY DUDES! TONIGHT IS CANCELLED!
Tonight at 7pm, KG Bird is in our loft to delight us with their experimental folk!
Following a personal tragedy, brothers Chris and Tim James found solace in playing music together—Tim on guitar and Chris on drums. Now, ten years later, the brothers James have switched roles and recruited bassist Ryan Parmenter to create KG Bird. Pulling from legends like George Harrison, Silver Jews and Creedence Clearwater Revival, the three-piece creates lush Americana-tinged folk laden with experimentation.
After playing around the Echo Park region, the trio recruited three more members: Will Nicoll (guitar), Aya Kawaguchi (keys), and Chris Park (drums, switching Tim once again to guitar). They've honed in on their catchy, experimental folk stylings to delight us tonight!
Listen to their catchy track "Pull The Mask Off" off their new album Morning Weather, and come out tonight to experience 'em live at 7pm in our loft!
